Rigid or foldable solar panel

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing between a framed module, a suitcase and a flexible sheet. A rigid or foldable solar panel is the right question only after you know whether the panel stays put, gets packed, or has to follow a curve. Pounds per stated watt favour the larger rigid frames. A pitch or a curved roof favours a suitcase or a sheet. Three shapes, three jobs

A rigid panel here is framed glass, usually with MC4 leads. It wants a shed, a rack or a flat roof, plus brackets the carton omits. A foldable panel here is a suitcase. The DOKIO 100 W has legs and a stated 10 A controller. The Ecosonique 200 W is about 5 kg, with a 24 V output, and the stands are already called average in wind. A flexible panel here is one product, the Topsolar 180 W sheet, about 3 kg, with a claimed 40 cm minimum bend radius. A flexible sheet is for a bonded curve.

What you pay for the sticker watt

Dividing the saved price by the title watts compares stickers, not British yield. The ECOBOSS 200 W rigid panel is about 44p per stated watt at £88.99. The AeternaSol 200 W is about 50p at £99.99. The Renogy 200 W is about 65p at £129.99, with 4.6 from 163 reviews. The DOKIO 100 W is about 80p at £79.99, and that price includes a 10 A controller the rigid panels do not. The Ecosonique 200 W is about 75p at £149.99, at 24 V. The ShadowFlux 200 W is about 97p at £194.99, which buys an anti-shade claim rather than a lighter shape.

Heat, bend, and a plug that fits

A flexible sheet bonded flat runs hotter than a frame with air under it. PV Logic's own panels are specified for about 3 cm of curve per metre. That figure is PV Logic's, not Topsolar's 40 cm minimum bend radius. Do not swap them. Plugs split the suitcases. DOKIO is XT60, clips and a controller. Ecosonique is MC4 and a short multi-lead, at 24 V, with the chip described for USB. MHPOWOS is XT60 without a controller. MHPOWOS says IP67. AeternaSol and ECOBOSS say IP68. DOKIO says waterproof and prints no IP number. The ShadowFlux panels are rigid, and 33.69 V or 36.5 V can rule them out.

Which shape to buy

Buy rigid if the panel can stay. The evidenced 200 W frame is the Renogy at £129.99, 10.6 kg, MC4, no controller. The AeternaSol 200 W at £99.99 is the cheaper glass if you accept 4.0 from 33 reviews and the same missing brackets. Buy foldable if you will aim it and pack it. Choose DOKIO when the battery needs the 10 A controller. Choose Ecosonique when the station accepts 24 V. Buy the flexible sheet only for a gentle curve you will bond, inside Topsolar's 40 cm radius. The shortlist is on best solar panel.

Common questions

Which shape gives the most watts per pound in this set?
On sticker arithmetic, the rigid 200 W frames: about 44p per stated watt for the ECOBOSS at £88.99, about 50p for the AeternaSol, and about 65p for the Renogy. The Renogy has the deep review sample. The ECOBOSS sample in the saved file is not headed United Kingdom. Suitcases sit nearer 73–80p, and the DOKIO price includes a controller. Pair listings with conflicting watt fields stay out of that sum.
When is a suitcase worth the extra money?
When you will move it and aim it, or when the DOKIO controller removes a second purchase. It is a poor bargain if the panel's home is a shed you could have bracketed, because the rigid 200 W frames state more watts per pound. A suitcase in a locker generates nothing until you unfold it.
When is a flexible sheet the only sensible shape?
When the surface curves enough that a frame will not sit, and you will bond the sheet and leave it. Here that is the Topsolar 180 W panel, about 3 kg, with a 40 cm bend radius claimed. It is not the sensible shape on a flat shed. UK reviews around 100–130 W in sun, and reports of glue or milky film, stay attached to that choice.
Can I fold a flexible panel into a bag every night?
That is a suitcase job, not this flexible listing. The Topsolar sheet is a thin panel with a stated bend radius. PV Logic's flexi panels use a different, gentler curve. Use the DOKIO, MHPOWOS or Ecosonique case if the panel has to pack away.
Do all folding panels use the same plug?
No. DOKIO is XT60 with clips and a 10 A controller. MHPOWOS is XT60 without a controller. Ecosonique is 24 V, with MC4 and a short multi-lead, and its protection claim is on the USB side. A controller-in-the-box kit is the wrong solar input for many power stations. An unregulated lead is the wrong thing to clip straight onto a leisure battery.
Which rigid panel is a bad match for a small 12 V controller?
The ShadowFlux panels, if the controller maximum is below 33.69 V or 36.5 V. They are rigid anti-shade modules, at £108.99 and £194.99, not a third shape. The standard Renogy 200 W prints 20 V maximum, which is easier to place, and it still needs a controller or a station input. On an unshaded roof, ShadowFlux does not improve the shape decision.
