Fuse box buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A fuse box buying guide is useless until you know which box the result is selling. On amazon.co.uk the same phrase covers a 230 V garage consumer unit at about £14 to £23 and a 12 V to 32 V blade block at about £7 to £22. If you are adding lights and sockets in a shed on the house supply, you need the first. If you are splitting a leisure battery in a van, you need the second. This page is the order of those decisions, not a star table. The [fuse box comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/fuse-box) holds the twelve listings and the prices. Prices are amazon.co.uk figures from 20 October 2026. This is not a lab test.

Two products share the name

A consumer unit and a blade fuse box both get called a fuse box, and they do not stand in for each other. The consumer unit in this set is a small mains board: a 30 mA RCD and miniature circuit breakers. The blade box is a low-voltage holder for ATC or ATO fuses, at 12 V, 24 V or up to 32 V DC. ISO 8820-3 covers those fuse-links for road vehicles, not a board on 230 V. A 13 A socket on the house supply is 230 V, so a blade block cannot feed it. A fridge or a pump on a leisure battery is 12 V, so an IP65 consumer unit does not protect that cable. If the shed is fed from the dwelling, read the garage consumer unit page before you count ways. If the only supply is a battery, the 12v fuse box vs consumer unit page is the shorter split.

Ways and the device that trips

Ways are today's circuits plus any spare you still want. A very small garage often needs two: one for lighting and one for sockets. Three of the 2-way units here state a 6 A MCB and a 16 A MCB under a 40 A 30 mA RCD. The only 4-way mains listing is the cupeohome at £22.99. Its MCB line lists 2 × 6 A, 10 A, 20 A and 32 A against a 4-way title, so you cannot treat that amp list as four devices until someone has the box open. On 12 V, ways are fuse positions. Most six-way and twelve-way blocks here state 30 A per circuit and 100 A for the panel. That 30 A figure is the holder's ceiling, and the fuse still has to match the cable. QWORK, at £13.99, states no per-circuit limit.

Where the box will sit

IP65 on these plastic garage units is a claim that the enclosure is dust-tight and resists water jets. It does not mean the board belongs in a house hallway. Regulation 421.1.201 in BS 7671:2018 calls for a non-combustible enclosure where a consumer unit is inside domestic premises. Electrical Safety First says that rule is not aimed at a unit mounted outside the building. A damp shed is where an IP65 claim is relevant. In England, Approved Document P makes a new circuit and a consumer-unit replacement notifiable, and a garage fed from the dwelling is in that scope. Wales also treats a fuse-box replacement as notifiable. Scotland uses building standards, not Part P. A 12 V blade box on a battery is not that mains notification.

What to read on the listing

Read the current figures before the stars. If a title says 40 A and another field says 20 A, as on the JIODEKEYI unit at £15.45, you do not have one rating to design from. If the MCB amps outnumber the ways, as on the cupeohome, treat the contents as unchecked. If a six-way blade block is listed at 20 g, as on the Pnoyws page, 4.7 from four reviews with no text does not repair it. Then read the complaint that repeats. ENDARK and KAOLALI reviewers report voltage with the fuse removed. Tawveml reviews, on a 4.6 from 652, describe fuses that do not stay seated. PATNFR reviews say the insert swaps live and neutral. ENDARK's 2,310 ratings say nothing about an RCD.

Common questions

Is a fuse box the same thing as a consumer unit?
In a UK house, fuse box usually means the consumer unit. On amazon.co.uk the same words also return 12 V blade boxes. If the listing says 30 mA and an MCB, it is a mains unit. If it says ATC, ATO or 32 V DC, it is a blade block.
Can a 12 V blade box feed garage sockets?
No. A garage socket on the house supply is 230 V. These blade boxes are listed around 12 V to 32 V DC. ISO 8820-3 covers blade fuse-links for road vehicles, not a mains socket. You need a consumer unit and a competent person.
How many ways should you count?
Count the circuits, then a spare if the box has room. One light and one socket is a 2-way shed, which is why several listings pair 6 A with 16 A. A heater needs another way. On a van, six ways is a small board and twelve is a fuller conversion.
Does IP65 mean the board is legal indoors?
No. IP65 is a claim about dust and water jets. Regulation 421.1.201 calls for a non-combustible enclosure inside a dwelling. These plastic boxes can be a damp-shed conversation. They are the wrong hallway board, and none states BS EN 61439-3.
Why do some titles list more MCB amps than ways?
The cupeohome title says 4-way and then lists 2 × 6 A, 10 A, 20 A and 32 A, which is five ratings. The 4.3 from 48 reviews does not prove which breakers are in the box. Ask a competent person to check the devices before they are connected.
What should you read in the reviews before you buy?
Read the fault that repeats. On blade blocks, look for fuses that fall out and for voltage with the fuse removed. On garage units, look for live and neutral swapped in the instructions. Nine reviews, or four with no text, cannot carry a rating the way 652 reviews can.
