Portable power station vs petrol generator

Updated: October 2026

A portable power station vs petrol generator decision, for a British flat or house, is mostly about exhaust and about how long the cut might last. Every listing in our [backup generator comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/backup-generator) is a battery, or in one case a hand crank. None is a fuel engine. A petrol set runs while you can fuel it, and it has to stay outdoors. Products Compared did not test or price a fuel generator. The battery files from 20 October 2026 run from about £42.79 to £899.99. A purchase through our links can earn a commission. Sizing, if you stay on this shelf, is the [backup generator buying guide](/hub/electrical-equipment/backup-generator/sub/backup-generator-buying-guide).

Same search, two machines

Amazon titles here say generator, and sometimes UPS. The specification is watt-hours and a lithium chemistry, not a tank. The Oumefar attribute says 4 stroke on a 20 W hand crank. That is catalogue noise. The other eleven are battery stations, up to a F2400 title of 2,400 W and 2,048 Wh. A petrol generator is missing from the table on purpose. This page does not rank a fuel model. The battery stops when the watt-hours are used. The petrol set stops when you cannot fetch safe fuel, or when you have nowhere safe to run it.

Indoors only if there is no exhaust

Carbon monoxide from a petrol engine is colourless and has no smell. National Grid says never to use a portable generator indoors. HSENI says the same for a garage and near open doors and windows. If you think someone has breathed exhaust, go outside and use NHS 111, or 999 if breathing is difficult or someone loses consciousness. A battery can sit indoors if the maker allows it. If a flat has no clear outdoor pitch, stay with the battery. What to run, and the Great Britain number 105, is on backup generator in a power cut.

When the fuel tank is the point of leaving the shelf

On this battery shelf the largest single pack in the title is the F2400 at 2,048 Wh. The Jump 2200 lists 1,408 Wh. Do not plan a weekend on the largest FlashSpeed figure, which is printed more than one way. The about £569.99 Jump 2200 kit adds a 110 W panel. That panel is a slow top-up, not a petrol can. A refill extends a run only outdoors, after the engine has cooled. A multi-day cut with a competent outdoor pitch is the case for a petrol set that is not in this table.

What still needs a professional

Do not backfeed a BS 1363 wall socket from either machine. The narrow 2026 plug-in solar exception does not cover this battery and does not cover a petrol set. A few house circuits need a changeover fitted by a competent electrician. Fuel does not live in the hallway. A first-floor flat can use a Jump 600X for lamps and a router if the maker allows it indoors. A petrol set in the bathroom, or on a balcony with the door cracked, is the option you do not take.

Common questions

Is the backup generator on this page a petrol engine?
No. The twelve amazon.co.uk listings behind this comparison are battery stations, plus one 20 W hand crank. The 4 stroke line on the crank’s attribute is noise. A petrol generator is a different product, with exhaust, and it is not ranked here.
Can I run a petrol generator in the garage with the door open?
No. HSENI and National Grid both rule out indoor use, and a garage counts. An open door does not make carbon monoxide safe, and a fan does not either. Keep the engine outdoors, away from doors and windows. If the only outdoor space shares air with a bedroom or a kitchen, it is not a pitch.
Why can the battery sit indoors when the petrol set cannot?
The battery has no combustion exhaust in normal use. The petrol set produces carbon monoxide, which you cannot smell. Indoor permission still depends on the manual, and it does not transfer to an engine.
Which lasts longer in a multi-day cut?
The fuel set, if you can keep it outdoors and keep refuelling after it has cooled. The batteries here top out, on the figures printed, around 1,408 Wh, 2,048 Wh, or a bundle claim near 2,956 Wh, and then they need a recharge. We are not quoting hours per tank for a petrol model we did not list. A solar panel is a limited top-up, not a fuel can.
What if I live in a flat and cannot put an engine outside?
Stay with the battery and cut the loads to lights, phones, and a router. A balcony, a hallway, or a garage under the flats is not a workaround. The cut may last longer than the watt-hours, and that is still safer than exhaust in a shared building. Report the outage on 105 in Great Britain, or through the contact your operator in Northern Ireland has published.
Does a solar panel on the Jump 2200 kit replace petrol?
No. The about £569.99 kit adds a 110 W panel to a 1,408 Wh station. The station-only ASIN has no panel. Output on a grey British day is not measured in our files, and reviews already call solar slower than the advert. Solar extends a battery. It does not turn the battery into a machine that runs for days on fuel.
What do I do if I feel dizzy while a fuel generator is running?
Treat it as possible carbon monoxide exposure. Stop the engine if you can do that quickly, go outside into fresh air, and do not go back in to fetch things. NHS 111 is the line for advice. Call 999 if breathing is hard, someone is confused, or someone loses consciousness.
