How to drill a clean hole in wood

Updated: 2026-10-23

The last hole splintered on the way out, browned at the rim, or snapped a 3 mm bit before it was through. How to drill a clean hole in wood is mostly support, chips, and a drill that stays square, not a second identical set. Clamp the work, stay in rotary mode, and ease off when the bit smokes. This page is the sequence. It does not rank the listings on the [wood drill bit comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/wood-drill-bit). Products Compared has not run a lab cut. The notes below come from UK workshop practice and from the failure themes in amazon.co.uk reviews. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set the drill up before it touches the wood

Clamp the timber so it cannot spin when the bit grabs. Mark the centre with an awl so a spade spike or a brad point has a seat. A pencil cross lets the bit walk, especially on filmed plywood. Put the combi drill in rotary mode and leave hammer off. Hammer is for masonry, and on a wood bit it snaps the shank. Push a short 3 mm bit in until the flutes are almost at the jaws, and tighten on the shank. r/DIYUK treats 3 mm and 4 mm bits as near-disposable in a hand drill because a slight cock snaps them. Wear eye protection. Seat the point at low speed until it has tracked, then commit. Which tip to buy sits on the buying guide.

Make the exit clean

Tear-out is the fibres on the far face letting go before they are cut. A spade bit does this more than a brad point. Clamp a sacrificial board tight against the exit. If you cannot, drill a pilot and meet in the middle from both faces. Tape will not save a 25 mm spade bit on a veneered board. Do not widen an existing hole with a spade bit. The centre spike needs timber in the middle, or the paddle tears an oval. A Forstner or a hole saw can follow a rim. For a 35 mm cup, keep the drill vertical. The bullets mention a drill press over 35 mm, and this pair is 35 mm.

If it smokes or the small bit snaps

A brown rim means the edge is rubbing. Back the bit out while it is still spinning, clear the chips, and continue more slowly. HSE notes that blunt tooling makes more dust. One hole in a ventilated room is not a workshop exposure. Repeated MDF holes in a closed room are closer to it. No UK law sets one rpm for every bit. Wood Magazine's chart is a rule of thumb: spade bits in hardwood around 1,500 rpm up to about 25 mm, and around 1,000 rpm above that. A cordless drill has a trigger, not a dial. Withdraw an ordinary bit while it still turns forwards. An auger comes out in reverse. Do not wag a stuck bit sideways. A 3 mm snap is usually that side load.

When to put the drill down

Stop if you do not know what is on the far side of the timber. A long bit through a joist, a stud or a floorboard can meet a cable or a pipe. If the drill stalls, do not add body weight. Reverse an auger out, clear the hole, and start again. Sleepers are often wet and gritty. Some reviewers get through and some jam. Neither story is a cycle count you can buy. Call a joiner or an engineer when the piece is a beam, a trimmer, a rafter or an engineered joist, or when the hole sits near a stair, a bath or a partition. A tidy hole in the wrong place is still a structural problem. Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, is a weak route if the bit was cocked, run on hammer, or asked to cut a nail.

Common questions

How do I stop the back of the board blowing out?
Clamp a waste board tight against the exit so the fibres are supported as the point breaks through. If you cannot reach the back, drill a pilot and meet in the middle from both faces. Tape alone is the weaker option. A spade bit still tears more than a sharp brad point at the same diameter.
Why is the hole brown and smoking?
The rim is rubbing. The speed is high, the flutes are packed, or the edge is blunt. Withdraw the bit while it turns, clear the chips, and continue more slowly. Leaning harder makes more heat and more dust. A cordless drill will not show you an rpm. The brown rim is the signal.
Why do 3 mm bits snap?
The shank has almost no strength sideways. A hand drill that cocks, even slightly, bends it until it breaks. UK reviews of brad sets and r/DIYUK both describe that. Chuck as much of the short bit as you can, keep the drill in line, and keep spares. It is a pilot, not a lever.
Should hammer mode be on?
No. Hammer mode is for masonry. A wood bit is a rotary cutter, and the blows snap it or chip the spur. If a new bit fails on the first square hole in softwood with hammer off, that is a quality question for the seller. If hammer was on, it is misuse.
How do I get an auger back out?
Run the drill in reverse so the screw walks back out, and do not bend the shank to lever it. DIYWiki's warning is that sideways force ruins the bit and makes the next hole wander. If it has stalled in wet timber, clear what you can, then reverse. Do not stand on the drill.
When is dust a real problem?
A single hole in softwood in a ventilated room is not the same duty as machining. Repeated holes in MDF in a small closed room are closer to the HSE case, where blunt tools make more dust and extraction plus a proper mask belong on a long run. Stop and ventilate if the air is hanging with dust.
