Best Torx bit set: match the box to the screw

Updated: October 2026

You are at a UK bench with a drill-driver and a star screw a cross-head bit has started to round. A search for the best Torx bit set often lands on a US video that snaps bits and quotes inch-pounds. We did not run that clip. Match the job: plain screws on a clutch drill, an impact driver, a pin in the star, or a socket on a ratchet. The [Torx bits comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/torx-bits) lists the twelve GBP prices and ratings we read on 15 October 2026. This page says who each kind is for. The Products Compared editorial team ran no lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

For a drill-driver and plain star screws

Start here if the recess is an open six-lobe star and the tool takes a 1/4 inch hex bit. The Wera Bit-Check 30 TX Universal 1, part 05057908001, is £18.95, with 4.7 from 1,119 ratings. Spare TX20 and TX25 bits at 25 mm are the ones a decking job uses up. One order arrived as a large box instead of the slim case. Skip it for a centre pin, or for an impact driver. Screwfix marks model 05057908001 as Impact Compatible: Standard. Impaktor is model 05057688001. Shank against price is on the Torx bit set buying guide.

When the listing describes a shock or torsion zone

The Milwaukee Shockwave 32-piece set, catalogue 4932471586, is £17.90, with 4.7 from 1,594 ratings. The bullets name a SHOCKZONE and do not print the T-numbers. Toolstation lists sizes for that manufacturer ID, including security pieces marked TX BO7 to TX BO25. That list is Toolstation’s, not the amazon.co.uk export. This is the top pick for an impact driver if you can buy without Amazon T-numbers. LIBRATON 914501, at £13.99, states a torsion zone and TT7 to TT40. Several of its 16 UK reviews were written before use. Facoow and ELEAD say impact and do not describe a neck.

When the screw has a pin

WORKPRO W000753, at £7.99, prints plain T4 to T6, then holed T7H to T40H. A UK reviewer cleared thread-locked motorcycle disc bolts with a T35 that felt slightly loose. HORUSDY, at £5.99, states a centre hole from T6 to T40 and keeps T5 plain. One bit bent. That box is the best value for a 1/4 inch security range under £6 if you accept the plain T5 and that bend. Skip a box that will not say which pieces are holed.

When you need a ratchet, not a hex chuck

Socket sets will not click into a drill’s hex holder. LEXIVON LX-143 is £21.99, with 4.7 from 17,493 ratings, from T8 to T60. The amazon.co.uk bullets do not print the drive split. The maker’s page does: 1/4 inch for T8 to T30, 3/8 inch for T40 to T55, and 1/2 inch for T60. A T40 snapped on a control-arm bolt. The listing states no impact rating. Qnkaa, at £10.88, adds a 1/2 inch T70 and says manual torque tools. Gunpla, at £3.61, is a 4 mm shank.

Which box to open

Open the Wera set for a plain star on a drill-driver. Open the Milwaukee set when you want a stated shock zone and can order without Amazon T-numbers. Open HORUSDY for a 1/4 inch security range under £6 if you accept a plain T5. Open LEXIVON when the tool is a ratchet. Leave a box that will not name the holed pieces.

Common questions

Which of these sets should I start with for a drill-driver and plain Torx screws?
For an open star and a drill-driver, start with the Wera Bit-Check 30 TX Universal 1 at £18.95, with spare TX20 and TX25 bits and 4.7 from 1,119 ratings. It has no centre hole, and the listing sends impact machines to Impaktor. A cheaper 1/4 inch box is only a substitute once you know the recess is plain.
Which listing actually describes impact geometry?
Milwaukee’s Shockwave set, catalogue 4932471586, at £17.90, states a SHOCKZONE for impact drivers and wrenches. LIBRATON, at £13.99, states a reinforced torsion zone. Those are listing descriptions, not a lab result. Facoow and ELEAD use the word impact and do not describe a neck. The Wera Universal set points you to a different Impaktor line.
Which set is for a screw with a pin in the middle?
Use a listing that prints the holed sizes. WORKPRO prints plain T4 to T6 and holed T7H to T40H at £7.99. HORUSDY states tamper bits from T6 to T40, with a plain T5, at £5.99. ELEAD’s tamper-proof title does not tabulate holes, and one reviewer found a hole too small for the pin.
When do I need sockets instead of 1/4 inch insert bits?
Use sockets when a ratchet or torque wrench is already the tool, which is common on car bolts from T40 upward. LEXIVON covers T8 to T60 at £21.99. Qnkaa adds a 1/2 inch T70 at £10.88 and states manual tools. Neither clicks into a drill’s hex holder. Read the drive size from the contents line.
Is the Wera Bit-Check 30 TX Universal 1 the Impaktor set?
No. Amazon.co.uk describes that set as a drill-driver box and tells you to use Impaktor on impact machines. Screwfix marks model 05057908001 as Impact Compatible: Standard. The Impaktor 10-piece on Screwfix is model 05057688001, and it is not one of these twelve listings. The Universal receipt does not put a diamond-coated impact bit in the case.
Why is the Gunpla set a poor best overall even at £3.61?
It is the lowest price here, at 4.2 from 2,182 ratings, but the shank is 4 mm, from T3 to T20. UK reviewers could not fit it in a 1/4 inch holder. It can suit a small appliance screw. It is the wrong default for a drill-driver.
