Best metal drill bits

Updated: 2026-10-23

You are choosing metal drill bits on amazon.co.uk, and a page titled best often crowns a cobalt set this sample does not stock. The useful question is which of these nine listings fits the hole, and which conflict should stop the order. Prices and stars are the rows saved on 19 October 2026, from £3.99 to £17.99. The full table is the [metal drill bit comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/metal-drill-bit). Stars are the amazon.co.uk rating, not a lab test and not a Which? score. Only these nine listings

Wood-bit sets, step-drill sets and drill-and-tap sets were already removed. What remains is twist drills for a round hole in metal. Bosch Professional HSS-Co sets are not in the saved listings. On the GB site they sat at about £24.68 to £68 including VAT on 22 October 2026. That band is the exit for weekly stainless work. If you have not yet decided whether you need 10 mm or only 5 mm, use the metal drill bit buying guide before you treat any row as the top pick.

Branded HSS for mild steel

For mild steel and aluminium, the Bosch Professional PointTeQ 19-piece, B078W41ZQG, is the set that contains the sizes. It is £14.12, 4.5 from 5,060 reviews, 1.0–10.0 mm in 0.5 mm steps, black-oxide HSS, not cobalt. Bosch’s GB page states DIN 338 and 135°. This amazon table leaves the angle blank, and one bullet says a reduced shank while the scope says round. It is the top pick. The Bosch 18-piece ToughBox, B076F43HPH, is the same HSS family at £11.95, 4.5 from 4,044 reviews, with 135° on the listing. It duplicates 2, 3 and 4 mm and has no half sizes above 5.5 mm. It will not give you a 6.5 mm pilot. DeWalt DT5912-QZ, B0013LK2J4, is £9.60, 4.5 from 1,386 reviews, HSS-R, 118°, and 1.5–6.5 mm. The amazon material cell says chrome vanadium steel. Keep both lines. It will not drill 8 mm or 10 mm. How to read HSS-R is on HSS vs cobalt drill bits.

Cobalt claims in this sample

shengbenhao, B09MTDM8DP, is £16.87, 4.2 from 290 reviews, and the bullets claim M35, 5% cobalt and a 135° split point. The size bullet names 12 diameters from 1.5 mm to 6.5 mm and skips 6.0 mm, while the title says 13 pieces. Saved reviews include a 6.5 mm hole in an RSJ after a DeWalt HSS set would not cut, and an edge that dulled after light use. The shank field says brace and the surface field says wood. Greywolf, B0DQXQM5BM, is £17.99, 3.9 from 24 reviews, 1–10 mm in 1 mm steps. The brand field says Generic. There are no half sizes. Ten UK reviews mix sharp with a first-use snap, a missing 2 mm bit, and a poor result drilling out bolts.

One diameter, and reviews that name another

Janzoom, B0BWMWC258, is two 1/8 in bits, stated as 3.2 mm, at £3.99, 4.4 from 19 reviews. That is a spare pair, not a set. STROTON, B08H1HJF99, is four 5 mm bits at £11.00, 4.3 from 721 reviews, with an M42 claim. Many saved reviews name 6 mm or 8 mm. Those comments are not a test of this pack. MOXPIFY, B0GYNX2HTW, is five 1 mm × 34 mm bits at £4.49, claiming M35. The split-point sentence applies from 3 mm upwards, so it does not describe this bit. Misuyue, B0DLSQ8PXF, is twelve 1 mm bits at £4.59, claiming M42 and a titanium coat. One UK review is about a 3.5 mm order. Buy a single size only when that size is the one you lose.

Who should leave this sample

If you drill 304 or 316 every week, leave these nine. The Bosch PointTeQ sets are black-oxide HSS, not Bosch’s HSS-Co range. shengbenhao and Greywolf are marketplace cobalt claims with a missing size, a Generic brand field, or both. A named HSS-Co set in the roughly £25–£70 band is what the GB Bosch prices point at. The method, including why a tiny pilot is a mistake, is on drill bits for stainless steel.

Common questions

Which of these sets is for mild steel and aluminium?
The two Bosch PointTeQ HSS sets, if you need sizes up to 10 mm, and DeWalt DT5912 if every hole is 6.5 mm or under. The 19-piece includes half-millimetre steps. The 18-piece is cheaper and skips those halves. None of the three is a cobalt set. Ordinary HSS is the right steel for mild steel and aluminium.
Is the Bosch 19-piece a cobalt set?
No. It is black-oxide HSS. Bosch’s GB PointTeQ page states DIN 338 and 135°, and does not claim cobalt. HSS-Co is a different Bosch range, and those sets are not in this amazon.co.uk sample. A black finish is not the alloy.
Are the cobalt-claimed sets in this sample a named M35 set?
shengbenhao claims M35 and 5% cobalt, then lists 12 diameters and skips 6.0 mm. Greywolf claims 5% cobalt, prints Generic in the brand field, and has 24 reviews. Neither is Hilti’s or Bosch’s named HSS-Co set. Treat the percentage as a claim you still have to read against the size list.
Can I trust the star rating on a 1 mm pack if the reviews mention another size?
No. MOXPIFY’s 4.4 from 35 and Misuyue’s 4.0 from 41 sit on listings whose saved reviews name other diameters, including a 3.5 mm order on Misuyue. STROTON’s 721 reviews often name 6 mm or 8 mm against a 5 mm pack of four. Use those stars only for comments that match the title.
What should I buy if I drill stainless every week?
A named HSS-Co set outside this sample, in the roughly £25–£70 band Bosch shows on the GB site, not shengbenhao or Greywolf as a crown. You still need a 135° point, cutting oil and a low speed. The conflicts inside this sample are a reason to leave it, not a reason to ignore the method.
