Diamond drill bit, angle grinder or drill

Updated: 2026-10-23

You own one machine, the hole is marked on a tile, and the listing in the other tab says drill and angle grinder in the same bullet. A diamond drill bit for an angle grinder and a diamond drill bit for a chuck are different purchases. M14 screws on. Hex, round and triangular shanks clamp in. Buying the wrong one means a return, or an adapter you did not budget for, and an adapter still does not change the speed the maker states. The eleven rows, with prices from 19 October 2026, are on the [diamond drill comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/diamond-drill). This page is only the machine. The shank is the purchase

Look at the shank before the star rating. An M14 thread matches a typical UK 115 mm or 125 mm angle grinder. A hex shank, a round shank and a triangular shank match a drill chuck. In this sample the M14 bits are BRSCHNITT at £15.79, SHDIATOOL at £15.99 and DT-DIATOOL at £24.99. The hex bits are Zeeorymn, ColumPRO and Vearter. The round shanks are DKIBBITH and BGTEC. YUEDAHOMEE is triangular. Meccion and Flintronic are chuck hole saws. Three listings blur that line. Vearter’s title says angle grinder and the spec shank is hex. Zeeorymn and DKIBBITH name grinders in the bullets, and no adapter is in the box. A sentence on the product page does not put a thread on a hex bit. BRSCHNITT’s shank field says square and the bullets say M14. Fit that one as M14. If you still need diameter and bond, the diamond drill buying guide is the order to follow.

A drill is slower and easier to hold

Meccion tells you 500 to 800 rpm with water on its 22 mm saw. ATS puts wax-filled drill shanks at about 500 to 1,200 rpm. For a first hole, a fixing around 6 mm to 12 mm, or one 22 mm tap hole, that control is worth more than a faster grinder. Meccion is the measured 22 mm wet cut. BGTEC or ColumPRO fit when you already know the hole is 6 mm. Zeeorymn is only for a few ceramic holes you can afford to lose. A drill is the wrong machine when the hole is large, the porcelain is a 20 mm slab, or the coated rim is already burning.

A grinder is faster and less forgiving

An angle grinder is built to run fast. SHDIATOOL states 6,000 rpm recommended and 11,000 rpm maximum for its 6 mm M14 bits. Topps Tiles puts other dry grinder bits near 11,000 rpm and up to about 14,000 rpm. Those figures are not Meccion’s 500 to 800 rpm. A vacuum-brazed M14 bit on a grinder is the usual way UK fitters cut repeat porcelain holes, because the rim is made for that speed. The cost of that speed is control. A skate at the start gouges a longer arc before you can react. Hearing protection is a sensible default, and the guard stays on. BRSCHNITT, SHDIATOOL and DT-DIATOOL are the rows that actually thread on. A 32 mm tap hole is BRSCHNITT’s job. A run of 6 mm holes is SHDIATOOL or DT-DIATOOL. For a first hole, use a drill chuck at the speed that bit states. For repeat holes, or a larger diameter, use an M14 bit if a grinder is already there and the guard still fits. Do not buy a grinder just to match a 6 mm hex set.

An adapter is a second product

ATS sells an M14-to-hex adapter as its own item, around £12.10 plus VAT on that trade page. The adapter is not in any of these eleven boxes. SHDIATOOL says a drill fit needs an adapter and does not include one. Running an M14 bit at drill speed does not make it match a 500 rpm instruction written for a different saw. A hex or round bit does not become an M14 bit because you want to use the grinder. Without a thread, it will not screw on. Buy the shank that matches the machine you will actually hold, then check the diameter.

Common questions

I own a combi drill. Which rows fit?
Hex, round and triangular shanks, plus the two chuck hole saws. That is Zeeorymn, ColumPRO, Vearter, DKIBBITH, BGTEC, YUEDAHOMEE, Meccion and Flintronic. Tighten the chuck on the shank the spec names. Meccion wants 500 to 800 rpm and water. The M14 rows, BRSCHNITT, SHDIATOOL and DT-DIATOOL, do not fit until you buy an adapter these boxes do not contain.
I own a 115 mm grinder. Which rows fit?
The M14 bits: BRSCHNITT 32 mm, SHDIATOOL two 6 mm, and DT-DIATOOL five 6 mm. Keep the guard on and use the speed that bit states. SHDIATOOL’s line is 6,000 rpm recommended and 11,000 rpm maximum. A hex or round set that mentions grinders in a bullet still needs an adapter you do not have. Vearter’s title mentions a grinder and the shank is hex.
Will a hex bit screw onto M14?
No. Hex is a chuck shape. M14 is a thread. Zeeorymn, ColumPRO and Vearter will not screw onto a grinder spindle, even where the title or the bullets mention an angle grinder. BRSCHNITT is the row where the field says square and the bullets say M14. Follow the bullets and the grinder line on that one, and do not treat the square field as a chuck size.
Does an adapter make a grinder bit safe at drill speed?
An adapter only changes the fitting. SHDIATOOL’s 11,000 rpm maximum and Meccion’s 500 to 800 rpm are different instructions. Running an M14 bit slowly in a drill can be a careful workaround if you own the adapter and the bit allows it. It does not copy the water-fed hole saw’s speed onto the grinder bit, and it does not come in the box. If you already own the drill and not the adapter, buy a chuck shank instead.
Why do some bullets say both machines?
The bullet is wider than the shank. Zeeorymn and DKIBBITH name grinders without packing an adapter. Vearter’s title does the same while the spec stays hex. If the adapter is absent, the machine you do not already own is a second purchase, not a feature of the set.
