SDS Max vs rotary hammer

Updated: 2026-10-23

Chisel mode on the drill you already own feels like a second tool, and on a slab it is not one. An SDS-Plus rotary hammer around 3.5–6 joules will drill and will lift tiles. A dedicated breaker is what opens a fireplace or a solid floor. This SDS Max vs rotary hammer page is that one comparison, using the corded listings in the [demolition hammer comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/demolition-hammer). Prices are the amazon.co.uk capture of 19 October 2026. Products Compared did not lab-test them. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The two mechanisms

A rotary hammer spins and hammers. The SDS-Plus examples here are the JCB 21-RH1050 at 3.5 J, the Einhell TE-RH 32 at 5 J, the Enventor at 6 J and the JCB RH1500 at 6 J. Chisel mode stops the rotation. It does not multiply the joules. A demolition hammer does not drill. The Draper is 25 J and SDS-Max. The JCB 21-DH1300 is 15 J and SDS-Max. The Einhell TE-DH 32 is 32 J and SDS-Max. The TC-DH 43 is 43 J and SDS-hex. The JCB 21-DH1700 is 30 mm hex, with 75 J in the title and 65 J in the bullets. BuildWiz puts SDS-Plus work at about 2–5 J and an SDS-Max breaker at about 8–30 J and above. An SDS-Plus chisel will not lock in SDS-Max, and an SDS-Max point will not fit SDS-hex or 30 mm hex.

When the rotary hammer is the right buy

Buy the rotary hammer when you still need holes. The JCB 21-RH1050 at £79.99 adds a 13 mm chuck, with 26 mm masonry in the bullets. The Enventor 6 J at £84.99 lists 32 mm in concrete, a case and two chisels. A reviewer drilled a lintel, and another lifted patio bricks. BuildWiz's tile band is about 2–5 J, so these 3.5–6 J tools are the honest match. The limit is a solid slab. An unsuitable tool increases exposure time, because you stay on the trigger while little breaks off. The HYCHIKA states no joules, and demolition use stopped it after about 30 minutes with the chisel stuck. The Enventor 12 J is SDS-Max at 12 J and 10.1 kg, with 5.0 from 13 reviews, and it is still a rotary hammer, not a breaker.

When you need the breaker

You need the breaker when the only job is breaking. The liftable pick here is the Draper at 25 J, SDS-Max, 7 kg and £119.94, with 4.6 from 501 reviews. It sits in the rough 20–30 J band for a 100–150 mm slab, and one UK review still found it feeble. The JCB 21-DH1300 at 15 J is the step down for a thin layer over boards, and the page does not state a weight. The Einhell TC-DH 43 is 43 J, 14.6 kg, £164.98 and SDS-hex, at 4.6 from 2,249 reviews. Reviewers opened a fireplace and complained about the weight. The TE-DH 32 at 32 J and 16.3 kg costs £279.95. The JCB 21-DH1700 at 24.5 kg is 30 mm hex, so do not quote one joule number from its conflicting title and bullets.

One condition

If the work is holes plus light chiselling, buy an SDS-Plus rotary hammer from this set and keep it. If the work is a solid slab or a fireplace opening, buy or hire a dedicated breaker and keep the drill for the holes. Do not retire the drill because the breaker exists, and do not ask the drill to finish the slab because the chisel mode is already on the dial.

Common questions

Can I break a patio with SDS-Plus chisel mode?
Often, yes, if the patio is bricks, tiles or a thin bed. The Enventor 6 J review that lifted cemented bricks is that job. A thick concrete slab under the slabs is a different job. Start at an edge, and stop if the tool is only polishing the surface.
Can I break a 100 mm slab with a rotary hammer?
Treat that as a breaker job. BuildWiz's rule of thumb puts a 100–150 mm solid slab around 20–30 J. The SDS-Plus tools here are 3.5–6 J. You might nibble an edge for a long time. You should not plan the day around it, and HSE's point is that the extra time is extra vibration.
Do SDS-Plus chisels fit SDS-Max?
No. The shanks are a different size and a different lock. SDS-Max in this set is the Draper, the JCB 21-DH1300, the Einhell TE-DH 32 and the Enventor 12 J rotary hammer. Your existing SDS-Plus points stay with the drill.
Is a 12 J SDS-Max rotary hammer a breaker?
No. The Enventor at £118.99 lists hammer drilling and a chisel angle, a 16 mm bit and a pointed chisel. It does not list a drill-only mode, and it is not a chisel-only demolition hammer. Thirteen reviews at 5.0 are too few to rank it above the Draper's 501 reviews.
What if my steels are SDS-hex or 30 mm hex?
Then the matching tool is the Einhell TC-DH 43 for SDS-hex, or the JCB 21-DH1700 for 30 mm hex. Neither accepts SDS-Max or SDS-Plus. Buying a higher joule number on the wrong shank means a second set of chisels before you make a start.
Will the wrong tool damage the motor?
It can stop the job even when it does not die on the spot. The HYCHIKA review describes a tool that drilled, then quit during demolition with the chisel stuck. Listings here do not give a failure rate. HSE's point is that the wrong class of tool keeps you on it longer.
