Faulty drill bit consumer rights: quality, price and wear

A bent spot weld bit and a bit that dulled after a long job are different tests under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Price counts. This is not legal advice.
On this page

The shaft was bent in the packet, or the edge polished away before the first spot let go. A faulty drill bit consumer rights question starts with that fact, then with the words and the price on the listing you bought. A bit that cut a long run of welds and then went dull is different from a bit that arrived already wrong. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 lets you describe the difference. It does not hand you a refund because a cutter is blunt.
This is not legal advice, and it is not a decision on your order. The Products Compared editorial team read section 9 and its explanatory notes on legislation.gov.uk, the GOV.UK guide to the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, and the amazon.co.uk review themes for this comparison on 15 October 2026. There is no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. What each listing claimed is on the spot weld drill comparison.
In short
Satisfactory quality under section 9 depends on the description, the price, and other public statements. A bent shaft or a missing bit on arrival is a different complaint from an edge that dulled after a real job. A £7.99 high-speed-steel bit and a £47.94 carbide bit are not the same durability conversation. Nothing here promises a refund. Speak to the seller first.
The test in section 9, in plain English
Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says a contract to supply goods includes a term that the quality is satisfactory. The standard is what a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking account of the description, the price, and other relevant circumstances. Those circumstances include public statements about the specific characteristics of the goods, made by the trader, the producer, or their representative.
In the right case, quality includes fitness for usual purposes, appearance and finish, freedom from minor defects, safety, and durability. A spot weld bit is usually supplied to separate spot welds in sheet metal. A bent shaft is an appearance point. The term does not cover a defect drawn to your attention before you bought, or one an examination you made ought to have shown.
The explanatory notes allow a cheaper product a different durability standard from one sold as long-life. It is not a rule that every cheap bit may be soft, or that every expensive bit must last a restoration. The wording of the section is on legislation.gov.uk.
A defect on arrival
Topcloud's UK reviews, on a nine-piece crown kit listed at about £12.96, include two delivery faults that are not wear. One order arrived with no drill bit. Another shaft arrived bent. A missing piece is a description problem: the box did not match what you were sold. A bend you can see before the first cut does not depend on speed, a missed centre punch, or a harder panel.
Those notes sit inside a larger file, 4.4 from 401. One reviewer was still on the first cutter after about 60 welds. Tell the seller before you straighten a bent shaft and carry on.
Heyung is shorter. Five 8 mm bits, titanium-plated, no cobalt sentence, listed at about £10.99, 3.4 from three reviews. The only UK-headed text says the bits do not cut. If the edge never started on a fair first weld, that looks like fitness and condition, not a day's work. Three reviews is a thin file, and a weak place to rest a claim about every similar gold packet.
Wear after real use
Durability is in the Act. A weld count is not. Sealey's AK4734, listed at about £7.99 with 4.6 from 192 reviews, shows both ends. Some UK reviews describe a large restoration on one bit, or an edge still cutting after tens of welds. Others report a chip after a few welds, a blunt bit after three, or a snap after three welds in what that reviewer called 1.5 mm mild steel.
Gasea's 6 mm and 8 mm pair, listed at about £7.79, claims 5% cobalt. One UK review says about three uses on a classic Mini sill, then a useless bit. Another says a bit went blunt before a single weld was drilled. JETHMA has a UK reviewer at about one bit every 10 welds. Gainsten has a blunt edge after two welds, beside a bullet about lasting three times longer.
A long fair job that ends dull can be the cheaper-product durability the notes already allow. A bit finished before one weld is closer to the arrival cases. High speed, a crown that was never square, and a missed centre punch will also kill a sound edge. Those causes are set out on the how to use a spot weld drill page.
Description, price, and a public line
Sealey's page says the AK4734 is high-speed steel with 5% cobalt, for galvanised and high-stress steels. That is the sort of public statement section 9 points at. An Amazon field that says Boron on the same bit clashes with the bullets. The boron sentence on Sealey's site sits on the carbide AK4740, listed at £47.94, which is outside these twelve listings.
Bohaner's bullets also say HSS with 5% cobalt. One UK review says the metal is soft and that this is no HSS. Another estimated 80 to 90 spots still cutting. There is no certificate in the file. If your bit matches the soft review on a fair cut, the 5% line belongs in the message to the seller. One review does not apply to a different brand.
On 15 October 2026 the shelf runs from about £7.48 to £16.99. Sealey at about £7.99 and the BGS set at about £16.92 are both inside it. The £47.94 carbide bit is a different tool with a different steel sentence. A low price does not rescue a bent shaft or a missing piece. The twelve listings are set out in the buying guide.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Satisfactory quality is a contract term with the seller. Product safety is separate. The GOV.UK guide to the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 says consumer products in Great Britain must be safe in foreseeable use. A shaft that snaps and throws a fragment is a safety fact as well as a quality fact. A bit that goes dull after a fair number of welds is much harder to call unsafe.
Northern Ireland moved to EU Regulation 2023/988 on 13 December 2024. If you bought there, the product-safety conversation follows that change. The Consumer Rights Act point still sits with the trader who supplied the goods. Quote the Great Britain guide only for Great Britain, not as if it covered the whole UK.
A public cobalt line is not a safety certificate. None of these twelve listings is a boron method. Using an HSS bit on press-hardened steel, because a bullet said high-stress, can be the wrong tool. That is not, by itself, a section 9 breach on a mild-steel wing the bit was described for.
Who you speak to first
You speak to the seller. The term is in the contract with the trader who supplied the goods. On amazon.co.uk that may be Amazon Retail, or another seller named on the order. Quote a maker line, such as Sealey's 5% cobalt sentence, when that is the public statement you relied on.
A wear complaint needs the punch, the speed, and how many welds you made. The Act has remedies where the quality term is breached, and some depend on how soon you reject the goods. This page does not set those clocks and does not tell you a refund will be offered. If the seller refuses, Citizens Advice is the next public step, including when Trading Standards is the body for a safety concern.
Keep the listing screenshot. The prices here are from 15 October 2026. A fee on a later purchase through this site, at no extra cost to you, does not sit in the complaint about the first bit.
