Wood auger or earth auger

Updated: 22 October 2026

You searched for an auger drill and the results mixed a bit for joists, a spiral for bulbs, and a machine for fence posts. A wood auger or earth auger is not a colour choice. It is three tools that share a word. Use a wood auger in timber, a garden auger for a bulb or a small stake, and the Einhell or a spade when the hole is about 150 mm. The models are on the [auger drill comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/auger-drill). Those listings were checked on 19 October 2026. We did not bore a sample. When the hole is timber

A wood auger is a rotary bit for deep holes in timber, with a point that tracks and flutes that lift chips. In this set that is the hsawbit, 40 mm by 230 mm at about £14.99, and the MOXPIFY, 20 mm by 460 mm at about £15.99. The hsawbit listing says soft and hard wood, MDF, plywood, lumber and landscape timber, and it says not for metal. The point is described as non-threaded, so you feed the drill rather than letting a screw haul it in. Buyers report cleaner joist holes than a spade bit. Neither wood bit belongs in a flower bed. Diameter and shank, once the family is settled, are on the auger drill bit buying guide.

When the hole is soil

An earth auger, in the chuck-bit sense, is a garden spiral. Thrink, the WORKPRO pairs, both LYFETC bits and Insaga are sold that way: bulbs, seedlings, small plants and, on some pages, post holes in soil. The narrow end is Thrink at about 30 mm and about £7.99, or a WORKPRO 4 cm bit. That is a planting hole if the soil is workable and the shank stays tight. The WORKPRO green short set is about £13.99 for 4 cm by 22 cm and 8 cm by 30 cm. The listing says not for tree roots or rocks. A garden spiral will not drill a joist. Planting sizes stay on auger drill for planting bulbs.

When the chuck is the wrong handle

A 150 mm hole is where a hex bit in a cordless drill stops being the tool. The Einhell GP-EA 18/150 is a separate machine: 150 mm auger, an 80 cm depth claim in the highlight, two handles, brushless, about £148.45, 4.5 from 752 reviews. The battery and charger are not in the box. Einhell recommends a 2.5 Ah pack or larger. Buyers describe fence posts in clay, a day of hedging plants, and a soakaway, and they also describe stops on stone and two units returned after a cut-out. What the machine adds is the diameter and a handle you can hold with both hands. Stones are still a spade. Do not buy it to plant crocuses, and do not expect a 4 cm bit to open a 150 mm hole. Conditional picks are on best auger drill bit.

Words on the listing that do not change the job

Catalogue fields will try to widen the job. The long LYFETC attribute list names wood, metal, concrete, glass and porcelain. The bullets describe a garden planting auger. The list is noise. It does not mean the bit drills a window. The Einhell attribute field says masonry and metal, while the bullets say soil and fence posts. A 1.5 cm item-length field sits next to an 80 cm highlight. Quote the highlight for the auger, and ignore the 1.5 cm. Insaga prints 7.5 cm, 3 inch and 24.89 mm for one product. Until you measure it, you do not know whether you have bought a narrow spiral or a wider one.

Common questions

Can a wood auger plant bulbs?
It is the wrong shape. The hsawbit and the MOXPIFY are sold for timber, and the hsawbit listing says not for metal, with reviews about joists and posts rather than beds. A wood flight lifts chips. It does not bore a clean plug of soil for a tulip, and it will clog.
Can a garden auger drill a joist for a waste pipe?
No. The garden bits here are soil spirals for bulbs, seedlings and small holes. Reviewers who wanted a waste-pipe hole in a joist described the 40 mm hsawbit, and they compared it with a spade bit, not with a WORKPRO set. A soil screw in oak or softwood skates, burns, or grabs.
When is a spade bit the closer alternative, and when is an earth auger?
A spade bit is the closer alternative for a shallow hole in timber, especially if you already own one and the timber is not thick. A wood auger is the closer tool once the hole is deep, as in a joist or a 6 inch post, which is what the hsawbit reviews describe. An earth auger is for soil.
What does a 150 mm cordless machine add that a hex bit does not?
Diameter, and two handles on a tool that does not depend on your drill’s chuck. The Einhell highlight is a 150 mm auger and 80 cm of claimed depth, at about £148.45 without a battery, with 4.5 from 752 reviews. A 4 cm or 8 cm hex bit cannot open that hole.
Why does one listing mention concrete and glass?
Because a raw attribute field has been filled with a generic surface list. On the LYFETC 5 by 80 cm bit that list includes metal, concrete and glass, while the bullets describe planting. On the Einhell, masonry and metal appear in a field the fence-post text does not support. Treat those lines as catalogue noise.
Is a drain auger part of this choice?
No. A drain auger is a flexible snake for a blocked pipe. One cordless drain cleaner turned up in the source dump for this category and was taken out because it is not a drill bit and not a post-hole tool. Buying it will not plant a bulb or bore a joist.
