One-handed topiary shears or a longer bow

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at one handed topiary shears and a double-bow pair. One listing in this set states one-handed use. The other two do not. Double bow covers a sheep-shear style you hold in one hand and a short hedge shear you hold in two, so the title is not enough. This page says when the spring shear is the right tool and when the longer bow is. The table is on the [topiary shears comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/topiary-shears). Peter F. updated this on 16 October 2026 from those listings and UK guides, not from a laboratory. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two shapes, and a label that lies

One-handed topiary shears are the sheep-shear or pruner shape. A spring holds the blades open, one hand closes them, and the other can steady a pot. Two-handed shears look like a short hedge shear: longer blades, a handle in each hand, and a straight pass. The English Garden uses double bow for a one-handed shear. The label describes the loops. It does not count your hands. Agrigem puts long blades on straight soft growth and shorter shears on curves. None of the three amazon.co.uk extracts prints a gape in millimetres. You can compare weight and a stated hand count. You cannot compare a number that is not there.

What these three listings actually say

The Jakoti, ASIN B00WN8N0SG, is the only listing here that states one-handed use, with a low-tension spring and a metal clasp. The handles are ash, the blade is 15 cm carbon steel, and the weight is 281 g, the lightest of the three. UK reviews mention comfort in smaller hands, and also rust and a clasp that can shift so the blades do not meet. One-handed is printed. Rust-proof is not. The Spear & Jackson 4855TS, ASIN B005GCT6CU, has no hand count on the amazon.co.uk table. Ambidextrous means left or right hand, not one hand. The brand blog describes this model in one hand for this year's box growth. If you need the product page itself to say one-handed, this listing does not. The Draper 84050, ASIN B01BYCO07Q, states double-bow plastic handles and no hand count. The cutting width is 330 mm and the weight is 340 g. At that length it is the shear in this set that behaves like a compact hedge tool. The product pick is on best topiary shears. Other filters are on the topiary shears buying guide.

Curves in one hand, straight runs with length

Use one hand when the listing says so and the shape is a curve. A ball, a spiral, or a cone in a pot is that shape. The Jakoti's 15 cm blade can follow it, and your free hand can turn the pot. A 330 mm blade on that ball bridges the curve and cuts a flat. Once the shear is chosen, the sequence is on how to trim topiary. Use the longer bow when the face is straight and you have accepted an unstated hand count. Open the Draper for that longer face after you have checked you can hold 340 g. For a ball or a spiral, buy the shear that states one-handed use, the Jakoti in this set, if you will oil the carbon steel and you accept £48.95.

Small hands and sore hands

The Jakoti is 281 g, the Spear & Jackson 322 g, and the Draper 340 g. UK reviews that mention arthritis describe the Draper as heavy. Some Jakoti reviewers with smaller hands describe that shear as comfortable. Those comments are not a medical claim. Do not buy the Jakoti as a treatment for sore hands. The Draper states no lock.

Common questions

What is a one-handed topiary shear?
It is a spring or scissor shear you close with one hand, usually with a short blade for a ball or a spiral. In this set only the Jakoti listing states that. A short blade on its own is not the same claim. The Spear & Jackson table does not say how many hands to use.
Does double bow mean two hands?
No. It describes looped handles. Guides use it for one-handed sheep shears and for two-handed hedge shears. The Draper states double-bow handles and does not state a hand count. Read the hand line, or accept that the page has not told you.
Is the Spear & Jackson 4855TS one-handed?
The amazon.co.uk specification does not say. It says ambidextrous, meaning left or right hand, and it states a safety lock. The brand's blog describes the 4855TS as held in one hand. Keep those as two sources. Do not treat the blog as a line in the spec table.
When is a 330 mm shear the better buy?
When the growth is soft and the face is straight, and you can hold the Draper's 340 g. It covers more of a run than a 15 cm blade. It is the worse buy for a pot ball, because the blade is longer than the curve, and for hands that reviews already call tired by the weight.
Are one-handed shears easier with arthritis?
Some UK reviewers with smaller hands find the Jakoti comfortable, and some Draper reviewers with arthritis find that shear heavy. That is as far as the comments go. It is not a medical recommendation. Gape is not printed, so a light shear can still be hard to close.
Can I shape a hedge with one-handed shears?
You can tidy a curve or a corner. A 15 cm one-handed shear will not cut a long straight boundary in any sensible time. That run wants length, the 330 mm Draper in this set, and only on soft growth. Thick stems still want secateurs.
Which listing should I open for a spiral?
Open the Jakoti if the page must say one-handed, and oil the blade afterwards. Open the Spear & Jackson if 164 mm is enough and you have read both the silent table and the brand blog. Leave the 330 mm Draper for a straight face.
