How to trim topiary without bruising the shape

Updated: October 2026

You have the shears in your hand. How to trim topiary, here, means this year's soft growth, with a blade that meets, and a stop when the wood is thick or a nest is in the way. Months, blight, and yew gloves sit on [box and yew topiary](/hub/diy-supplies/topiary-shears/sub/topiary-shears-box-and-yew). The listings are on the [topiary shears comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/topiary-shears). Before you close the blades

Look into the plant before you take a tip. Wild birds, their eggs, and nests in use are protected. If you find a nest in use, you stop, even in August. That sits in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The closed season from 1 March to 31 August is a rule for agricultural hedgerows, not an automatic ban on a private garden ball. The nest check still applies in a garden. Choose a dry day. Wet foliage hides the line, and a damp blade is how these shears rust. If the plant is box and blight worries you, clean and dry is the one sentence that belongs here. UK reviews on the Spear & Jackson 4855TS and the Draper 84050 describe blades that cross. Close the shear slowly on a soft tip you can spare. If the edges meet, start. If they spring past each other, stop. No source we used states a sharpening angle, so this page will not invent one.

Follow the shape, not the longest shoot

BBC Gardeners' World tells you to keep the blades parallel with the mature surface. You are skimming this year's fuzz so the old outline shows through. On a ball, start at the top and walk around. On a spiral, the shear takes the open ribs and secateurs take the tight tip. Take less than you think. A second pass is easier than a hole in a box ball. Brush the clippings off as you go. A 330 mm shear on a small ball clips a flat chord. Switch to a 15 cm or 164 mm pair. Which length to buy sits on the topiary shears buying guide. What double bow does not mean is on one-handed and two-handed topiary shears.

Put the shear down

Secateurs take over when the stem is thick, at the tip of a spiral, and on holly. A shear slices holly leaves and leaves a brown edge. Gardens Illustrated draws the same line: do not cut wire or tough wood. One UK review of the Spear & Jackson describes a blade bent by a tough branch. Do not bend it back and carry on. Stop as well if the shear is chewing or leaving a bruised tag on every tip. If they fold, the blade is blunt, crossed, or you have reached old wood. Hard renovation of a large neglected yew or box is where you stop and ask before you cut. Brown leaves the week after a clip can be scorch on soft growth, or blight. You cannot separate those from this method page.

Oil, shut, and store

Carbon steel rusts if you put it away wet. That comment turns up on the Jakoti and Spear & Jackson reviews, and Draper reviews mention rust as well. Brush the sap off, wipe the blade, and put a light oil on the steel before the afternoon is over. Shut the lock or the clasp. The Spear & Jackson clip is often called weak, and the Jakoti clasp can shift, so check the blades have stayed closed. Hang it where it stays dry. If the clasp will not hold, stop using that pair. Another clip three days later, because you noticed a tuft from the kitchen, is how a ball shrinks. Wait for the next hardened flush, and use the plant page for whether that wait runs to August.

Common questions

Where do I start on a ball or a spiral?
On a ball, start at the top with the blades parallel to the old surface, walk around, and step back before you take more. On a spiral, use the shear on the open curves and secateurs on the tight tip. Brush clippings off so you can see the line you just made.
How much can I take off?
On an established shape, take this year's soft tips, a little at a time. Young box is a different rule, up to about a third in May, and that belongs on the plant page. If you can see pale wood or a hole in the outline, you have gone past a trim.
What do I do if the blades cross?
Stop forcing them. Close the shear on a soft tip you can spare and watch the edges. If they still pass each other, do not keep clipping. UK reviews describe this on the Draper and the Spear & Jackson. Crossed blades fold stems. They do not improve if you squeeze harder.
Should I oil the shear the same day?
Yes. Wipe the sap off and oil carbon steel before you store it, then check the lock or clasp has stayed shut. UK reviews link rust to damp storage on these shears. Leaving them overnight in wet grass is the habit those comments describe.
When do I switch to secateurs?
Switch for thick stems, for the tip of a spiral, and for holly, so you cut stems rather than slicing leaves. A shear that chews, or a blade that bends, is the same signal. One Spear & Jackson review records a blade bent by a tough branch. That cut is over.
Can I clip if I have not checked for nests?
No. Look first. Birds, eggs, and nests in use are protected, including in a private garden. The March to August hedgerow rule is a separate agricultural restriction. It does not replace the nest check, and it does not by itself ban a garden ball.
