Swivel castors buying guide

Updated: 17 October 2026

You are about to buy one pack for a cabinet or a small bench, and the title is offering a large kilogram and the word braked. A swivel castors buying guide has to slow that down. That kilogram is often a set figure beside a smaller per-wheel line, and braked often fails to say how many wheels lock. The [swivel castors comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/swivel-castors) is the table. This page is the order: the job, one third of the loaded weight, the lift, the brake count, then the plate. Peter F. read the listings on 15 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job, not the kilogram

A swivel castor turns a full circle in its fork, so you can steer a plant stand without lifting it. Four swivels do that in a tight room. The same four under a long bench wander, because this sample has no fixed castor and no directional lock. If you will lean on the bench while you work, four free heads are the wrong layout. QED Castors splits the choice by movement, fitting, material, and floor. PUWER 1998 is not a duty on a household plant stand. DSL’s 50 mm pack is rank 1 in the snapshot, at 4.6 from 3,927 ratings. That rank is popularity, not a bench that must track straight.

Diameter changes the lip and the height

A larger wheel rolls a lip more easily and it lifts the furniture. The DSL packs state 71 mm overall on 50 mm, about 100 mm on 75 mm, and 135 mm on 100 mm. A plant stand under a window may only have room for 71 mm. A bench on a threshold wants the taller wheel, and the worktop rises with it. Ignore Wheel Width: 2 Inches unless a bullet states a width. Where the title and the attribute disagree, measure the wheel. How the locks differ is on swivel castors with brakes.

Read the brake count, then the plate

Braked in a title is not a count. Reviews often show two locks out of four, and one buyer of a small DSL pack ordered a second set. A 100 mm model line that says four brakes still has a review describing two braked wheels and two standard wheels. Open the box before you fit all four. The plate is not the wheel diameter. QED’s plate up to 125 mm is often 105 × 80 mm. A 50 mm square will not cover it. Measure the hole centres. Short screws in veneered chipboard pull out. The sequence is on how to fit swivel castors.

What this sample will not decide

None of the 12 listings states BS EN 12528:1999, BS EN 12529:1999, BS EN 12532:1999, or BS EN 12531. Heavy duty does not add those badges. Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, says goods must match the description. That frames a title. It is not a finding that a seller is in breach. Aeaocvo’s bullets say peel-and-stick, the attribute says 0.35 pounds, and there are no reviews. That is not a sideboard castor. Anything a person rides needs a specified castor. Two tread words in one listing are on polyurethane or rubber castors.

Common questions

What load can a set of four actually take?
This comparison did not weigh any pack, so actually is the wrong promise. Use one third of the loaded weight on each wheel, because an uneven floor may load only three. Where the listing prints 200 kg and 50 kg each, read 50 kg as the wheel. A lone 700 kg line is not a per-wheel test.
Do I need two brakes or four?
You need a count that matches the way you use the piece, and the title often refuses to give it. Two locks can hold a sideboard that you only nudge, and they will not hold a bench you lean on if the other two wheels are free to roll. Four claimed brakes are only useful if the listing, and then the box, actually has four pedals. A wheel brake can still let the unit slide.
Are 50 mm wheels enough, or do I need 75 mm or 100 mm?
Match the overall height to the gap, not the word heavy. The DSL packs state 71 mm overall on 50 mm, about 100 mm on 75 mm, and 135 mm on 100 mm. A cabinet under a window often wants the lower figure. A bench that hits a lip wants the taller wheel, and you then live with the higher worktop. The repeated Wheel Width: 2 Inches attribute is not a reason to pick either size.
Will the plate match the holes I already have?
Only if you measure. An industrial plate up to 125 mm is often 105 × 80 mm in QED’s guidance, and the furniture plates in this file are not that pattern. Hold the old plate, or a template of the hole centres, against the size in the listing before you order. Wheel diameter will not tell you the holes. A face that will not hold a short screw is a fitting question, not a star-rating question.
When is a fixed castor the right layout instead?
When you need the piece to track in a straight line, four swivels are the wrong layout, because they steer and they wander. This sample does not include a fixed castor or a directional lock. If the bench will be pushed down a room, or leant on while you work, look outside these 12 listings rather than buying the rank 1 swivel pack and hoping it will run true.
