How to empty a standing ashtray safely

Updated: October 2026

Knowing how to empty a standing ashtray matters because a cigarette end can remain hot after the visible smoke has stopped. The safe order is to stub out every end, douse the contents with water, and transfer the cold ash to an outside metal bin rather than tipping it into a plastic sack or mixed household rubbish. Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue advises emptying in the morning when possible, after the ash has been left to cool overnight. This process applies whether you own a small telescopic tray or one of the larger bins on the [standing ashtray comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/standing-ashtray). Make the cigarette ends cold first

Do not start by lifting the liner. Check that each cigarette has been stubbed out and that you cannot see smoke or a glow. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Warwickshire County Council both advise pouring water on cigarette ends before they go into a bin. Durham and Darlington suggests emptying in the morning, after the ash has had the night to cool, and adding water whenever you are unsure. Use enough water to reach material below the surface. Seller words such as fire-resistant do not make hot emptying safe. Keep paper and other flammable rubbish out of the ashtray, and do not empty a pipe straight into a bin. If a public unit holds mixed waste, douse it and treat it as an uncertain fire risk.

Use an outside metal bin, not a sack

Once the contents are cold and damp, transfer them to an outside metal bin if possible. Do not tip ash into a kitchen bin, a plastic bag or mixed refuse while any heat is possible. Durham and Darlington warns against putting ash into a bin with a liner or mixed waste. Open the receiving bin before you lift the liner, and keep it on level ground. If there is no liner, move only the part the manufacturer says comes apart. Do not flush cigarette ends. The pub-garden guide explains why a commercial site also needs a litter and fire plan.

Remove the liner, top or locked lid

Douse first, then open the unit. SANGFOR and ISUMER state removable inner metal containers. SONGMICS states a 12.3 litre bucket and EVRE a 17 litre bucket. Lift that container level. A lock only changes the sequence by needing the key first. The £79.99 Normodic supplies one. The galvanised model does not confirm one. SupBiky and Reliancer come apart, but neither listing states a separate lift-out bucket, and KARE states no liner. If a hinge or lock is jammed, stop rather than forcing a container of ash.

Clean the metal after the ash is out

Clean only after the ash is cold, damp and removed. Wipe with a soft cloth and the cleaner the manufacturer allows. The British Stainless Steel Association says bleach and ordinary steel wool can stain stainless steel, and these listings rarely name a grade. Dry hinges, seams and any telescopic joint before you reassemble. One Reliancer review reported hinge rust within eleven days, so drying matters more than scrubbing. Take the unit out of use if you find a sharp edge, a loose base or a failed lock. The standing ashtray buying guide covers liners and fixing.

Know when it becomes a workplace task

At home, douse the ends, leave them overnight where you can, and empty into an outside metal bin. At a workplace, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires a fire risk assessment. This guide cannot do that assessment for your premises. Name who checks the smoking point, where the metal bin stands, and what happens if a liner is hot or jammed. If you cannot complete the assessment, GOV.UK says you can appoint a competent person. Stop if there is active fire, persistent heat or damaged equipment.

Common questions

Should you empty a standing ashtray while the contents are warm?
No. Stub every end out, add water and wait until the contents are cold. Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue suggests emptying in the morning where possible so ash has cooled overnight. If there is any doubt, douse it before opening or tipping the tray.
Can ash go into a kitchen bin with a plastic sack?
Not while it may still contain heat. Fire-service guidance says not to put ash into a lined bin or one containing other refuse. Use an outside metal bin if possible, after dousing the ends and tray. Do not rely on the absence of visible smoke.
Do you pour water in before or after emptying?
Pour water onto the cigarette ends and ash before they leave the tray. Let it wet material below the surface, then transfer the cold contents to the outside metal bin. Water added only after ash reaches a bagged bin comes too late to control the transfer risk.
What if the standing ashtray has no removable liner?
Use only the holder, top or tray that the manufacturer intends to come apart. SupBiky and Reliancer do not state separate liners, and KARE lists none. Douse first, keep the detachable part level and never invent a release method over warm ash.
Can you use bleach or steel wool on stainless steel?
The British Stainless Steel Association says bleach and ordinary steel wool can stain stainless steel. Use a soft cloth and a manufacturer-approved cleaner instead, then dry the metal. Listings in this comparison rarely state a stainless grade, so broad material wording is not a cleaning instruction.
When should a workplace call a competent person?
If the person responsible cannot complete the required fire risk assessment, GOV.UK says a competent person can assist. Get help as well when the unit is damaged, the key is missing, there is persistent heat, or your current route ends in a plastic sack rather than a safe metal container.
Does a fire-resistant listing claim make hot emptying safe?
No. A seller’s wording is not permission to transfer hot ash into mixed waste. Follow the same sequence for every model: extinguish, douse, cool, then empty into an outside metal bin. The claim does not replace the workplace fire risk assessment.
