Standing ashtray buying guide: choose by the job

Updated: October 2026

A standing ashtray for a sheltered balcony is not the same purchase as a cigarette bin beside a busy door. Before comparing finishes or star ratings, decide whether people will use it while sitting or standing, how often somebody will empty it, and whether strangers can reach it. Those answers separate a £20.99 telescopic tray from a £79.99 lockable column more clearly than the word windproof. Compare the amazon.co.uk listings on the [standing ashtray comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/standing-ashtray). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the height to sitting or standing

Start with where the person is sitting or standing. Roughly 40–70 cm can work beside a chair. The SANGFOR can be assembled at 42 or 61.5 cm, and the fixed ISUMER is listed at 57 cm. The KARE spans 37–72 cm, but it weighs only about 830 g. A standing user normally needs the opening nearer 90 cm. Reliancer extends from 54.6 to 88.9 cm, and it is the only light telescopic model here that approaches that point. One UK reviewer who was 6 ft 5 in still found it low while standing. SONGMICS and EVRE are both about 60.5 cm high, so their larger liners do not solve reach at a standing doorway.

Choose a liner you can actually lift out

A removable inner cup lets you leave the column in place and carry a smaller metal container. SANGFOR and ISUMER state removable inner containers. SONGMICS states a 12.3 litre bucket, and EVRE states 17 litres with a removable bucket. SupBiky and Reliancer come apart, but neither listing states a separate lift-out liner. KARE states none. Up to 40 butts or up to 50 butts is not a measured volume. SupBiky’s stated 600 ml still needs more frequent emptying than a 12.3 litre bin. The telescopic ashtray versus cigarette bin page takes that decision further.

Read weather claims through weight and design

Windproof is a listing claim, not a shared test. A lid or restricted slot can contain ash, but it does not prove the unit will resist a gust. SupBiky is listed at 950 g, Reliancer at 1 kg and KARE at about 830 g, so be cautious on an exposed balcony if the base cannot be fixed. SANGFOR weighs 2.16 kg and EVRE 3.71 kg. The two Normodic listings give 6.5 kg and 5.44 kg, with a flange or four mounting holes. VeftBltrem says it has a weighted base but prints 5 g. Those statements conflict, so 5 g is not a real measurement.

Add a lock and bolts only when the site needs them

A private balcony rarely needs a key, and bolts may be impossible in a rental. A public spot is different, because a portable tray can be moved or filled with unrelated rubbish. The £79.99 Normodic states 94.5 cm, 6.5 kg, a supplied key and a flanged base. That is a different job from a £25 telescopic tray. The £89.99 galvanised Normodic states four holes and screws and a lockable lid, but it does not confirm a key, and its dimensions conflict. Check ownership and the premises requirements before you drill. The pub-garden cigarette bin page covers siting for a pub, café or workplace.

Check the metal, ratings and price together

Stainless steel does not name a grade on these listings, and there is no shared corrosion test. KARE is chrome-plated steel. The British Stainless Steel Association warns that bleach and ordinary steel wool can stain stainless steel. SONGMICS shows 4.3 from 10,115, but the saved reviews mostly describe a kitchen bin. SANGFOR shows 4.7 from 515, yet most captured reviews concern another ashtray. Light home products here cost £20.99–£27.99, domestic liner bins £37.08–£39.98, and lockable columns £79.99–£119, from ten listings on 15 October 2026.

Common questions

How tall should a standing ashtray be for a balcony?
For seated use, roughly 40–70 cm is a useful starting range because the opening can sit beside a chair. Check the assembled height against your furniture and railing rather than relying on the word telescopic. Exposed balconies also need enough base weight, since several trays in this comparison weigh about 1 kg or less.
Does a removable liner matter?
It matters when you want to leave the outer column in place and carry only the ash container. SANGFOR and ISUMER state inner cups, while SONGMICS and EVRE use larger removable buckets. SupBiky and Reliancer come apart, but their listings do not state a separate lift-out liner.
Is a lid the same as a windproof design?
No. A lid or flap can contain ash and cover the opening, but the whole unit can still tip or move. Read the listed weight, base and fixing details separately. No shared wind test is available for these products, so windproof remains seller language.
Can you trust thousands of ratings?
Only if the reviews describe the product you are buying. The SONGMICS listing shows 10,115 ratings, but most saved review text concerns a different kitchen bin. SANGFOR has a similar product-mixing problem. Use relevant review details and specifications rather than ranking these ashtrays by the headline count.
When is a lockable cigarette column worth buying?
A lock becomes useful at an unsupervised workplace, pub frontage or other public-facing site where a light tray could be moved or opened. At home, the extra cost and fixing requirements may add little value. Confirm that a key and suitable mounting hardware are included before ordering.
What should you avoid when cleaning stainless steel?
The British Stainless Steel Association says bleach and ordinary steel wool can stain stainless steel. Empty and cool the ash safely first, then follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions.
