Sandbag buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You searched for a sandbag and amazon.co.uk handed you a flood sack, a studio saddle, a gazebo strap and a gym shell. This sandbag buying guide is the fork before the prices. Every kept listing in the [sandbag comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/sandbag) ships empty, so the bag is only half the purchase. Sand, a second person and the right job come first. The Products Compared editorial team read those eleven amazon.co.uk listings and the public UK council pages in October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Our top picks

On this page

Start with the job, not the star rating

A 4.6 star line can sit on a light-stand bag and on a goal weight at the same time, so the stars cannot pick a winner across the table. A tied or buckled sack about 33 by 76 cm is the flood shape. A double-zip saddle is for a light stand. A strap that wraps a tube is for a gazebo leg. Velcro on a frame is for a goal. A handled nylon shell is for training. The top-pick badge sits on the Amazon Basics studio 4-pack, and the listing marks it as not water resistant. If a flood warning is up, leave that badge. The best sandbags page names who should skip each pick. A waterproof line on a studio bag is not a barrier. Fill it with sand or gravel.

Empty means sand, time and a second person

None of the eleven listings includes sand. The polypropylene 10-pack at £7.49 is about £0.75 a sack, the hessian 10-pack at £13.99 is about £1.40, and the canvas 4-pack is £8.40. Those are prices for empty cloth. A UK-wide price for sharp sand is not in this file. Kirklees Council says sharp sand, not soft sand, at about 15 kg a flood bag. Derbyshire County Council says about 20 kg of sand or soil. This guide does not average them. A bag filled to the brim will not sit flat. The fill line and the brick bond are on the how-to page, not here. Edinburgh does not promise to deliver filled bags. Buy the sacks before a warning if the job is a flood.

A flood sack is a tied or buckled bag, not a zip saddle

For a door, stay with a tied or buckled flood sack. Polypropylene is ten sacks at £7.49, with a tie and no kilogram maximum. Hessian is £13.99, listed at 15 kg wet or 20 kg dry. Canvas is four bags at £8.40, up to 20 kg. None shows a Kitemark. The Environment Agency leaflet that councils still echo says at least six bags for about 20 cm at one standard door. A 4-pack is not that course. A 10-pack is one low door plus a spare course. If you need the air bricks, use the sandbags for flood defence page. UK reviews on the hessian ASIN say fine dry sand pours through the weave. Do not put a studio zip in a doorway because the stars are higher. Cskunxia's 24-pack has no review line.

Studio, canopy, net and gym bags are weights

Once the job is a weight, read the stated fill. Amazon Basics prints up to 9 kg. EMART's 4-pack is £22.99 and prints both 12 kg and 11.3 kg. ShiLiuYiDaLe is £9.99 for two, with no kilogram maximum, and the UK review says the clips break. The MOPHOEXII canopy 4-pack is £29.99. The bullet says up to 60 lb (27 kg) a bag, and the title says 240 lb for the set. Treat both as the listing's claim. Reviews, mostly from outside the UK, report less and report split seams. Do not repeat 27 kg as a test. The sports-net 4-pack is also 4.6, from 264 reviews, so the shelf index is lower. The Yes4All shell is £28.06, size M marked 0–34 kg. Buy that size line, not a heavier figure on the title.

Common questions

Do these sandbags arrive full?
No. Every kept listing in this comparison ships empty. The titles and bullets say you add sand, gravel or another heavy fill. Budget for that fill, and for someone to hold the bag, before you treat the shelf price as the cost of a finished weight.
How much sand should I buy before the bags are useful?
Kirklees Council says about 15 kg of sharp sand, not soft sand, in a flood bag. Derbyshire County Council says about 20 kg. Keep those as two council figures, not one average. Studio and gym bags use their own stated maximum, and several of those maxima conflict on the same page.
Can I fill a waterproof studio bag with water?
Do not. Amazon Basics is marked not water resistant. EMART says the saddlebags cannot hold water even where the page also says waterproof. The canopy listing claims waterproof cloth and still describes a sand, rock or dirt fill. One review says that bag is not tight enough for water.
Why do two flood pages disagree on 15 kg and 20 kg?
They are different councils, not two measurements of the same listing. Kirklees pairs about 15 kg with a half-full bag of sharp sand. Derbyshire pairs about 20 kg with a three-quarter fill and a tie. The hessian listing prints 15 kg wet or 20 kg dry. The polypropylene listing prints no kilogram figure at all.
What should I ignore if I only want a gym bag?
Ignore doorway counts, hessian weave, polypropylene sunlight and the top-pick badge. The Yes4All page you want is the unfilled size M shell at £28.06, marked 0–34 kg. Leave the 80 kg and 90 kg lines on the title and the bullets as other sizes, not as this bag.
