Standard vs heavy duty shed felt

Updated: 23 October 2026

Standard vs heavy duty shed felt is a mass difference you can check and a life claim you cannot. The two Rose Roofing rolls both say 5 m × 1 m. The heavier sheet is the buy when you are rough on felt or the roof is exposed. The lighter sheet is the buy when the roof is a small, sheltered slope of at least 20 degrees and £21.40 matters. The green 6 m roll is not in this pair, because its width is not printed. Both listings are on the [roofing felt comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/roofing-felt), at 19 October 2026 amazon.co.uk prices. Same length and width, different mass

The standard roll (B096MMRCR9) is black mineral, 5 m × 1 m, 9 kg, at £21.40. That is £4.28 per stated square metre, and 1.8 kg/m² if you divide yourself. The heavy-duty roll (B08LH51RS1) is green mineral, the same stated 5 m × 1 m, at 12 kg and £28.50. That is £5.70 per stated square metre, and 2.4 kg/m². The field says waterproof. The title prints 25 years. No minimum pitch is printed. The gap is £7.10 for 3 kg more roll, not a proved extra twenty years. IKO’s June 2024 sheet puts ordinary glass-fibre shed felt at 1.88 kg/m², and the May 2024 polyester super sheet at 2.15 kg/m². Rose’s premium polyester page quotes 2.4 kg/m² and does not print 25 years.

What 5 years and 25 years are

The black roll’s five years sits in the band IKO uses for ordinary mineral shed felt. Rose’s trade sheet does not print 25 years. The green roll’s 25 years sits in the title. No review describes that long a life. The kilograms still differ either way.

Fibre, glass, polyester

The black roll says fibre-based bitumen. These listings print no BS 747 type and no BS 8747 class. The green roll will not settle. One field says fibreglass, the top says polyester felt, and the base says cardboard. The wrapper in the product photo reads “Super - Shed Polyester” and “High Performance Polyester Shed Felt”. We do not call this ASIN the Rose premium SKU. Tears follow the lighter sheet. On the 9 kg roll, buyers report holes and splits while fitting a shed. On the 12 kg roll, the complaints are grit, weight, and one torn delivery.

Which roll, on what condition

Choose the heavy-duty roll when the shed is small and pitched, you want 12 kg on a known 5 m × 1 m, and you will ignore 25 years as a test. It is not worth it if you need a printed pitch or a settled carrier. Choose the standard roll when the roof is small, sound, and at least 20 degrees, and you will cut on a board instead of hauling the sheet over sharp edges. Leave the green 6 m roll (B071G5NLXH) out. It does not print a width. Twelve kilograms on an unknown area is not the heavy-duty roll, but longer. All three rolls are on best shed roofing felt. Laying either 5 m roll is the same order of work on how to lay shed roofing felt.

Common questions

Is the heavy-duty roll actually heavier?
Yes. The standard roll is 9 kg and the heavy-duty roll is 12 kg, each on a stated 5 m × 1 m. That is 1.8 kg/m² against 2.4 kg/m² if you divide yourself. The pages do not print those units. Three kilograms on the same stated sheet is the fact. A 25-year life does not follow from the kilograms.
Does 25 years beat five years?
The title is a bigger number. The file does not show a longer life. Five years is on the black roll, in the ordinary IKO band, and Rose’s trade sheet does not print 25 years. Twenty-five years is in the heavy-duty title, past IKO’s 15-year polyester line, with no long-term review in the capture. Buy the 12 kg roll for mass, not for a proved quarter-century.
Is the heavy-duty roll polyester?
The file will not settle it. One field says fibreglass, another says polyester felt, and the base says cardboard. The photo wrapper says “Super - Shed Polyester”. Rose’s premium page quotes 2.4 kg/m² and does not mention 25 years. Matching arithmetic is not a single material line. Do not buy this ASIN on the assumption that the carrier is settled.
Which one tears, and do they need the same pitch?
Reviews describe tears on the 9 kg black roll more often. The 12 kg roll is described as thick, and also as gritty, heavy, and occasionally torn in transit. Only the black roll prints a minimum pitch, at 20 degrees. You cannot copy that figure onto the heavy-duty listing. A flat roof is refused by the black bullet and unanswered by the green one.
Is the extra £7 worth it?
£28.50 against £21.40 is £7.10, or £5.70 against £4.28 per stated square metre. It is worth it when you want the heavier sheet and you are likely to split a thin one. It is a poor trade on a small, sheltered 20-degree shed if you will handle the 9 kg sheet carefully. The £7 does not buy a tested 25-year life.
Why is the other green roll not in this comparison?
B071G5NLXH does not print a width, so it cannot be compared per square metre with two rolls that state 5 m × 1 m. It is £22.48, with no life line and a water-repellent field. The best-of page still covers it. Colour is separate: black versus green here is the mineral face, not the grade.
