Shed roofing felt buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are in front of a timber shed, a kennel, or a hutch, and amazon.co.uk is a row of black and green rolls with year-counts in the titles. A shed roofing felt buying guide should settle the checks before the stars, because the wrong pitch wastes the sheet. This page is that checklist. The [roofing felt comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/roofing-felt) ranks the three Rose Roofing rolls we kept. The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk prices captured on 19 October 2026: £21.40, £22.48, and £28.50. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Shed felt here is one bitumen sheet with a mineral face, nailed to a boarded roof on a portable outbuilding. It is not shingles, not foil repair tape, and not a built-up roof a specifier would pick from BS 8747. None of the three listings prints an S or P class, so none is a specified cap sheet. Black and green are the colour of the grit, not a durability grade. IKO’s June 2024 data sheet is a parallel, and it is not these ASINs: glass-fibre SBS at 1.88 kg/m², non-habitable boards at or above 20 degrees, up to five years when fitted as they specify. That UKCA mark does not travel onto the Rose listings.

Five checks before you look at stars

Pitch comes first. The only listing here that prints a minimum is the standard black roll, at 20 degrees. Silence on pitch is not permission to lay a roll flat. Known area comes second. Five metres by one metre is 5 m² of sheet before overhangs and laps. A length with no width cannot be turned into cover. Whether 5 m² of sheet is enough is on roofing felt for sheds. Mass comes third, because these listings do not print millimetres of thickness. Nine kilograms on a stated 5 m² is about 1.8 kg/m². Twelve kilograms on the same stated area is about 2.4 kg/m². The life line is print, not a clock we started. The water word is the fifth check. Clout nails are the usual fixing, and they are not in the box unless the bullet says so.

What the three amazon.co.uk rolls do and do not print

The standard black roll (B096MMRCR9) prints the most of the checklist: 5 m × 1 m, 9 kg, five years, 20 degrees, water resistant, and fibre-based bitumen, at £21.40. The heavy-duty green roll (B08LH51RS1) is the same stated size at 12 kg and £28.50. The field says waterproof and the title prints 25 years. No minimum pitch is printed. Fibreglass, polyester felt, and cardboard all appear. The two that both print 5 m × 1 m are argued on standard versus heavy-duty shed felt. The green 6 m roll (B071G5NLXH), model 339159, is 12 kg at £22.48. The file prints no width, no life line, and no pitch. Six metres of unknown width is not automatically more roof than 5 m × 1 m.

When the checklist says stop

Stop if the roof is a house, a flat, or boards you can push a thumb through. A rotten deck will split a light sheet and will not hold a nail. Stop if the green roll you want is the 6 m listing and you still do not know the width. Stop if you are ordering because the colour matches the fence. When pitch, area and mass are acceptable, the order of work is in how to lay shed roofing felt.

Common questions

What pitch does shed felt need?
Only the standard black roll prints a figure, and it is 20 degrees. IKO’s June 2024 sheet uses the same minimum for its own product, on a boarded roof that is not lived in. The heavy-duty listing and the 6 m listing do not print a pitch. A missing line is not a flat-roof approval. If your shed is shallower than 20 degrees, do not treat the black bullet as optional.
Is a heavier roll the same thing as a longer life?
No. On the two rolls that state 5 m × 1 m, 12 kg against 9 kg is a real difference in mass. The 25-year line is only in the heavy-duty title, and nobody in that file reports 25 years of use. IKO’s own split is five years for ordinary shed felt and up to 15 for its polyester super sheet. Mass is something you can weigh. A year-count is something the seller printed.
Why do the listings use different water words?
The black roll says water resistant. The 6 m roll says water repellent, and the page asks whether it is waterproof without an answer in the file. The heavy-duty roll says waterproof. Those are the words on the pages. They are not three labels for one test, and we did not run a water test of our own.
Are the nails in the box?
Not according to the captured Amazon bullets. Two buyers of the black roll expected clout nails and did not find them. On the heavy-duty roll, one review says nails arrived and others say they bought them. Ashbrook says its own Rose standard rolls include 13 mm nails. That shop note does not rewrite the Amazon file. Buy galvanised clout nails unless the parcel actually contains them.
Can I use shed felt on a house flat roof?
No, not from these listings. The black roll prints a 20-degree minimum, and a house roof is a different specification. BS 8747 is the UK selection guide for reinforced bitumen membranes, and none of these ASINs prints a class from it. A flat roof on a lived-in building needs a system specified for that roof, not a shed roll chosen by stars.
