Hydraulic jack oil for a trolley jack

Updated: 23 October 2026

The saddle stops short of the sill, and the amazon.co.uk page offers a 500 ml bottle, a 5 litre can and a 20 litre pail that all say hydraulic. Hydraulic jack oil for a trolley jack, in this set, is the small bottle the sheet allows, poured through a funnel because the spout in the photo is often missing. A trolley jack wants jack oil, in a small bottle

A top-up is a few hundred millilitres, not a workshop fill. Carlube reviewers say 500 ml was more than one top-up. A 20 litre pail weighs about 18 kg in the HMT listings and exists for ISO VG 46 or 68. Decanting a cup from that pail is how dirt and the wrong grade arrive together. The two 500 ml bottles are Carlube XHJ501 at about £8.41 and Sealey HJO500MLS at about £13.83. Both print 10W. Neither amazon file prints ISO 32, even where a UK shop says they meet it. Carlube’s own site shows £7.19 and Sealey’s page shows £15.54. Use the amazon figures on amazon.co.uk. If you are not sure the jack wants jack oil, settle that on family first.

Carlube or Sealey

Carlube is the top pick when the sheet says jack oil and does not name a Sealey part. You get 500 ml, 4.7 from 679 reviews, a United Kingdom origin line and model XHJ501. The listing says it works with conventional sealing materials. People wanted a spout. The hole in one note is about 6 mm. Sealey is the bottle when the sheet prints HJO500MLS. The 2500CX instructions name that pack or HJO5LS, and they say the jack lifts and does not support the vehicle. You pay about £13.83, about £27.66 a litre, for 4.5 from 135 reviews. The material field says synthetic and the upper temperature cell says 100 °C. That is still not an ISO VG. Skip Carlube if the PDF says HJO500MLS. Skip both for a car reservoir or a bicycle brake.

The nozzle is not in the listing

Sealey reviewers say the photograph showed a thin nozzle and the cap was plain. The included-components line says hydraulic jack oil and does not list a nozzle. Carlube draws the same complaint. A search for a Sealey spare nozzle for HJO500MLS did not return a maker’s spout. Do not delay a safe top-up while you hunt one. Use a clean funnel, wipe the plug, and pour with the ram down. Silverhook’s ISO 32 neck is the opposite problem: reviewers say it is wide, so a 6 mm jack filler still needs a small funnel. Five litres at about £23.98 is not the easier jack top-up. A plain cap on the next delivery matches the reviews. It is not a reason to pour whatever is already in the garage.

What you must not pour

Brake fluid is the dangerous substitute. Sealey’s HJO500MLS page, the 2500CX and 1150CX sheets, and Faithfull’s instructions all say not to top up with it. Other sheets add engine oil, alcohol and glycerine. If brake fluid is all you have, leave the jack down. HMT 46 at about £65.49 is best value in the wider set only when the sheet says ISO VG 46 and you can use 20 litres. Do not decant it into a trolley jack. CHF 11S, Liqui Moly 2500 and bicycle mineral oil are other jobs. Silverhook ISO 32, 1 litre at about £10.45, belongs here only when the jack sheet allows ISO 32. A shop line that Carlube or Sealey meets ISO 32 does not upgrade the amazon listing. If the floor is wet after new oil, the seal has failed. Used oil goes to a recycling centre, not a drain.

Common questions

Does Sealey include the thin nozzle in the photo?
The captured listing does not. Included components say hydraulic jack oil, and UK reviews say the cap was plain. Sealey’s own page does not mention a nozzle, and there is no spare-spout part in the search behind this page. Take a funnel.
Can I pour Silverhook ISO 32 into the jack?
Only if the jack sheet allows ISO 32 hydraulic oil. Silverhook prints ISO 32, and the maker lists jacks among its uses. Many sheets simply say jack oil and ban brake fluid. In that case stay with Carlube or Sealey. The wide neck still needs a funnel, and 5 litres is more than a top-up.
What if I only have brake fluid?
Leave it in the brake system. Sealey and Faithfull tell you not to top up a jack with brake fluid, and other sheets ban engine oil. A jack that stays down is safer than one that rises once on the wrong fluid and then creeps.
Will 500 ml fill the jack?
On the jacks in Carlube’s reviews it was more than one top-up. It will not fill a workshop tank, and one Sealey reviewer found it short for a motorcycle lift. Check the level with the ram down. Overfilling pushes oil out later. Underfilling leaves the handle spongy.
Why did my jack sink again after new oil?
If the floor is wet, a seal or a joint is letting oil out, and another bottle will follow it. If the floor is dry and the handle is spongy, bleed air with the release open. Do not work underneath until stands are taking the weight.
