Grit for driveways

Updated: 23 October 2026

The drive is icy, and the same square of concrete sits against a lawn and a dog who will walk through whatever you throw. Grit for driveways, in the three sacks on the [grit comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/grit), is rock salt. Salt can melt the film of ice and still hurt the surface, the planting, and the animal. This page is that harm, not the shovel order. Products Compared used the Concrete Society, the RSPCA, GOV.UK, and the saved amazon.co.uk listings. There is no lab freeze-thaw on these bags. Concrete and a pile of salt

You can put rock salt on a sound, older hard drive if you keep it thin. The Concrete Society says a high concentration that soaks in can speed freeze-thaw damage. A thin scatter beats a shovel pile against the garage door. Chlorides have little effect on hardened cement paste. They matter where steel is in the concrete. If the slab was poured with mesh, ask whoever specified it before salt becomes a habit. These listings do not state a sulphate figure. None of the bags says it is safe on new concrete. If the drive was laid this season, leave the salt off and use sand or ash for grip, which GOV.UK allows. None of these bags is sold as urea.

Paving, gravel, and the weed reviews

Salt meltwater runs into the sand between block pavers and then onto the lawn. Brush the excess off the joints once the ice has gone. Gravel is where reviews leave the ice job. All three bags have reviewers who used them on weeds. Darlies brown prints a gravel question and does not answer it. One reviewer saw the gravel change colour after about three months. Laeto's title is a weed killer, and one reviewer says it kills the soil as well as the weeds. That is a warning, not a herbicide rate. GOV.UK tells you not to spread salt on plants or grass. Laeto's non-toxic sentence is the seller's claim, next to a BS 3247 line with no certificate in the file.

Dogs and the unanswered pet question

Every listing in this set prints a pet-friendly question and leaves it blank, including the white bag, the brown Darlies bag, and Laeto. A blank question is not a yes. White crystals are not a pet formulation, and a non-toxic bullet is not the RSPCA's advice. The RSPCA treats licked rock salt as a poisoning risk. Signs they list include thirst, vomiting, lethargy and, in worse cases, convulsions and kidney damage. Wipe feet, legs, and tummy when you come in. If the dog has eaten the salt, call a vet the same day. Do not induce vomiting unless the vet tells you to. Keep the open sack shut. Absence of veterinary reviews is not evidence the salt is safe to eat.

Plants, and when you stop

Salt reaches plants in the soil and on the leaves. Forest Research describes roadside trees damaged by de-icing salt, with symptoms that can show the following summer. The lawn edge and the hedge beside the drive are in the runoff. GOV.UK says do not spread salt on plants or grass. One white Darlies reviewer dug salt into a border. One Laeto reviewer said the treatment kills the soil. Stop the scatter at the hard edge. If the concrete is new, reinforced, or already scaling, talk to whoever specified it. If a dog or a child has eaten the salt, that is a vet or a clinician the same day. The public road stays with the highway authority.

Common questions

Is new concrete a different case?
Yes. Leave salt off concrete laid this season. These bags do not say they are safe on new work, and this page will not invent a curing period. Use sand or ash for grip until the surface is established, and ask the specifier if you know there is steel in the slab. Chloride is a reinforcement problem more than a problem for hardened paste.
What about block paving and gravel?
Meltwater carries salt into paving joints and out onto the lawn. Brush excess salt off the joints after the ice goes. Gravel is where reviewers used these bags on weeds. One report describes a colour change after about three months, and another says the salt kills the soil. That is not a reason to dose a gravel drive as a weed killer.
Is any bag pet safe because a question is printed?
No. A pet-friendly question appears on Darlies white, Darlies brown, and Laeto, and none of the saved pages answers it. White salt is not a pet product. Laeto's non-toxic bullet is the seller's claim. Treat every bag as ordinary rock salt around animals.
What do you do if a dog eats the salt?
Wipe any salt off the paws, legs, and tummy, and phone a vet the same day if it was swallowed. The RSPCA lists thirst, vomiting, lethargy, convulsions, and kidney damage among the risks. Do not induce vomiting unless the vet says so. A second scatter of grit does not help the dog.
Will the same salt kill weeds without hurting the lawn?
Reviewers have used all three bags on weeds. One says it kills the soil. GOV.UK tells you not to put salt on plants or grass. Weed death next to a drive is a side effect, not a rate you should copy. This page does not prescribe a weed-killing dose for Laeto or for either Darlies bag.
