Dog food tube training: carry a small reward, then stop

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are on a walk and the treat is a soft paste. A food tube can carry it. It does not train the dog. Dog food tube training still needs a reward the dog wants, given as the behaviour happens, in a small amount taken out of the day's food. The [food tube comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/food-tube) holds the two silicone listings. [How to fill a food tube](/hub/diy-supplies/food-tube/sub/food-tube-how-to-fill) is the paste and the washing. The [buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/food-tube/sub/food-tube-buying-guide) is what to read before you pay.

The tube is not the training

The Kennel Club says to use food that excites the dog, to take it out of the daily ration, and to grade it so a harder task gets a tastier reward. It does not mention a tube. The PDSA says to reward during the behaviour or within about half a second, to keep sessions short, and to use small pieces, with a smaller meal if the treats are rich. Dogs Trust says soft, smelly food works as a reward, deducted from meals. Those three UK organisations describe the reward. They do not describe a squeeze tube. A pea-sized squeeze matches 'small pieces'. A mouthful is a meal delivered by accident. If the dog does not want the paste from a spoon at home, the listing you bought will not create the want. Which listing fits names the ASINs. It does not change the timing.

What the silicone listings are for

AKONE and Qiwenr are the listings sold for wet dog food and a training reward. Coghlan's is the condiment tube, at a stated 226 ml. One United States review used it for blended canned dog food. That aside does not put it on the dog shortlist. AKONE, £9.99 for three in the capture, states 90 ml, at 4.3 from 62 ratings. Reviews that mention dogs are German, not British. They want thin liver sausage, and they say the outlet is too small and the front can come off. The carabiner is for clipping the tube to a bag or a lead. Qiwenr, also £9.99 for four, states 60 ml, at 4.0 from 1 rating. The only review is from Canada and calls them lotion bottles. Nothing in the file describes a dog. The seller's answer on puppy use is not in the capture, so this page will not say yes.

Empty tube or a ready-filled snack

An empty tube is the buy when you want to choose the paste, reuse the container, and wash it the same day. Both silicone packs are £9.99 in the capture. You still have to accept that the written reviews are not from the UK. A ready-filled snack is the buy when you do not want a filling job. TubiDOG liver sausage on zooplus.co.uk is 75 g at £2.79, described as a supplementary food for training and for hiding a tablet. It is not an ASIN in this comparison. If you only need a few walks, £2.79 and a bin at the end can be the smaller commitment. A rich snack still comes out of the day's food. Those 62 ratings are German and Spanish text.

Keep dog paste off human food

If the paste is raw meat, the Food Standards Agency's raw-pet-food guidance applies. Use a dedicated container, wash your hands, and keep the tube off surfaces you use for people's food. A meat paste in a warm pocket is not chilled storage. Shampoo and dog paste do not share a tube. Practise one small squeeze over a plate first. If the cap comes off, or the dog chews the tube, stop. A swallowed cap, clip, or piece of tube is a vet visit. If a person is ill after handling raw pet food, use the NHS. The tube is only the pocket.

Common questions

How big should each squeeze be?
About the size of a pea, given once for the behaviour you marked. The PDSA asks for small pieces and a smaller meal if the treats are rich. A soft tube can empty itself if you grip it like a bottle. Try the squeeze over a plate first. If the whole paste lands at once, that grip or that paste is wrong for a single reward.
Will the seller confirm a food tube for a puppy?
The question appears on the silicone listings. The seller's answer is not in the capture, so we will not invent one. A puppy that chews kit can damage a soft tube and swallow a cap. Use a paste the puppy is allowed, keep the tube out of the mouth, and stop if chewing starts.
Should I buy an empty tube or a £2.79 prefilled snack?
Buy the empty AKONE or Qiwenr pack, both £9.99 in the capture, when you want to choose the paste and reuse the tube. Buy TubiDOG, 75 g at £2.79 on zooplus.co.uk, when you want liver sausage already in a tube for training or for hiding a tablet. TubiDOG is not in this comparison. Both still count toward the day's food if they are rich.
Should the treats replace part of dinner?
Yes, when they are rich. The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust say to take rewards out of the daily ration. The PDSA says to offer a smaller meal if the treats are rich. A 60 ml or 90 ml tube of liver sausage can be a large share of a small dog's food if you empty it on one walk. Decide the amount at home.
What do I do if the dog chews the tube?
Take it away for that session. The carabiner on the AKONE listing is a clip for carrying, not a chew. If a cap, a clip, or a piece of tube is swallowed, call a vet. A chewed outlet will not go back to giving you a pea-sized reward.
