Wall filler buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are in a spare room with a roller waiting, a hairline crack beside the window, and a hole where a curtain bracket pulled out of the plaster. This wall filler buying guide is the order of checks before a tub goes in the basket: name the damage, decide inside or outside, read the depth that product is allowed to fill, then buy a pack that matches that job. The [dry fill comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/dry-fill) holds the eight amazon.co.uk listings and the captured shelf prices in GBP. Peter F. read those captures and the makers' UK sheets on 21 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are filling

Start with the hole you can see, because the product follows the damage. A nail hole or a hairline settlement crack in sound plaster is a fine, shallow job. A dent you can press a fingertip into, still on solid plaster, is a deeper fill. A hole you can see through, into the cavity behind plasterboard, is not a filler job until something spans that void. DIY Guides treats those bands as a rule of thumb, and you still read the sheet for the tub in your hand. Firm plaster and a small hole usually wants a ready-mixed paste. A crater that is still bonded usually wants a powder. Torn paper and a dark cavity are not a tub decision yet.

Interior, exterior, or both

The sheet beats a marketplace bullet when the two disagree. Toupret Quick Fill, captured at £13.99 for 1 litre, is an interior product for walls and ceilings. Sika Everbuild One Strike, captured at £7.90 for 1 litre, is the product whose sheet allows interior and exterior use, and forbids rain and frost while it cures. The amazon.co.uk attribute block does not state interior or exterior, so the sheet is the page you trust. Langlow fine surface filler, captured at £2.50, is an interior smoothing paste. The Palace sheet limits a layer to not more than 3 mm. Toupret Interior Filler, the 1 kg powder at £8.75, is interior only and not water resistant.

Depth and paint time

Thirty minutes and no depth limit are lines on particular products, not a law of filler. Quick Fill's title says paint in 30 minutes, and a review of a deep hole left by an electrician says that fill took several days to harden. Interior Filler's UK sheet is 500 ml of water per 1 kg and a working time of 30–40 minutes. The amazon capture does not print the ratio. One Strike's sheet says up to 75 mm deep and 50 mm wide, dry in about 30 minutes at 20°C and 50% relative humidity. Those figures are not in the amazon bullets. Reviews describe a dry skin over a soft centre, including holes about 3 cm deep that stayed soft for weeks.

How much to buy

Pack size follows the job you named first. One Strike at 1 litre is the step up for a scatter of shallow holes. Interior Filler at 1 kg is the step when the holes are deep and you can use the batch inside 30–40 minutes. The 10 kg Toupret joint and skim, at £27.69, is for board joints, not three hooks. Langlow at £2.50 is the low outlay for fine interior cracks if you check the pack, because the title and the weight fields disagree. Which listing fits the hole is the best wall filler page. Mixing against opening a tub is powder filler versus ready mixed.

Common questions

Do I need powder or a ready-mixed tub for nail holes?
Nail holes and hairline cracks in sound interior plaster are a ready-mixed job. Langlow, the Decex 396 g tube, and the other fine pastes in the comparison are aimed at that scale. Powder, in this set Toupret Interior Filler, earns its place when the hole is deep and you can mix and use a batch within 30–40 minutes. A ready-mixed tub you will open once and reseal is the simpler buy for a few hooks.
What depth is this filler actually allowed to fill?
Read the sheet for that product. Langlow is layers of not more than 3 mm. The Decex bullets say up to 10 mm. The 10 kg Toupret capture limits its no-crack claim to 5 mm. Interior Filler's bullets say no depth limit, on interior surfaces. One Strike's 75 mm by 50 mm figure is on the Sika sheet, not in the amazon bullets. A hole you can see through needs a bridge or a new piece of board before any of those numbers matter.
Can I use an interior filler on an outside wall?
Quick Fill and Toupret Interior Filler are interior products, and Interior Filler is marked not water resistant. One Strike's sheet allows exterior use and forbids rain and frost while it cures. Langlow is an interior smoothing paste. The Decex bullets say indoors and outdoors up to 10 mm, on a 15-review sample that does not discuss the outdoor claim. Match the sheet, and leave an interior tub inside.
Why does 30 minutes change in a cold room?
The short times on Quick Fill, Fome Flex and the One Strike sheet assume a thin fill in a warm, reasonably dry room. One Strike's sheet quotes about 30 minutes at 20°C and 50% relative humidity. Interior Filler's sheet refuses application below 8°C. A deep fill in a cold box room skins on the surface and stays soft in the middle, which is what reviewers describe when they scrape a hole out weeks later.
When should I stop and call a plasterer?
Call a plasterer or a builder when the crack keeps growing, the plaster is blown or hollow, the board is soft from a leak, a ceiling needs a whole panel, or you suspect cables, pipes or movement. Filler will not tie a failed wall back to the masonry. Damp and mould are also outside this category: fill a dry, sound surface, and get the leak sorted before you decorate.
