How to install a drainage pipe

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have matched the pipe, and the next mistake is to make the joint permanent before the run fits. Solvent cement grabs ABS or PVC-U and does not let go. This page is how to install a drainage pipe once the diameter and the joint already agree. The [drainage pipe comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/drainage-pipe) holds the listings. If the fitting will not go on, read [solvent weld or push-fit waste pipe](/hub/diy-supplies/drainage-pipe/sub/drainage-pipe-solvent-weld-or-push-fit) before any tin is opened. Products Compared editorial team used manufacturer install sheets and the amazon.co.uk listings captured on 21 October 2026. We did not install these pipes. Dry-fit before anything is permanent

Assemble the whole run with dry joints first, including the fall, the trap, and the last connection into the stack or the gully. Kalsi's solvent-weld waste guide says a joint that is wrong after the cement has grabbed is scrap. Plan the fall, push the pipe home dry, and only then open the tin. If the dry fit needs force, the outside diameter is probably the other system. Cement will not turn a 41 mm push-fit pipe into a 43 mm solvent socket. Cut square, chamfer the outside of the cut, and deburr the inside so a lip does not catch hair and grease. Mark the socket depth in pencil so you can see the pipe went fully home. On a push-fit joint the same mark shows the ring has taken the full spigot. Keep the trap where you can still undo it. Kalsi says leave the trap serviceable rather than cementing the joint you will need when the sink blocks.

Solvent-weld sequence

Use this sequence only on solvent-weld ABS or PVC-U. The eco-filtration 43 mm and 82 mm sticks in the comparison are titled as solvent-weld PVC, and cement is not in either box, so the tin is a separate purchase. Do not put that cement on polypropylene push-fit pipe. Polypipe states that polypropylene does not react to solvent cement, and a smeared joint there is a leak with a ruined ring, not a weld. Kayflow's waste sheet is one manufacturer's method, not a universal cure. Cut square, chamfer, dry-fit, cement both faces, wait about 2–3 seconds, insert with a twist, and hold for about 10–20 seconds. A joint you have to hammer home is not a weld. Support the pipe so the wet joint is not holding the fall. A Wickes sheet for FloPlast 32 mm and 40 mm solvent-weld pipe gives clip centres of 0.5 m horizontal and 1.2 m vertical. If a joint leaks after the cement has cured, cut it out. Kalsi says you do not pull a cured solvent joint apart. Replace the socket and the spoiled pipe end.

Flexi wastes and a channel are not the same job

Hibbent and Qrity are push-together flexible wastes, not solvent sticks. Offer the hose up, mark a length inside the stated range, and only then tighten the adapters the listing includes. A bend is not a measured 75 mm seal. If the existing trap is good, keep it and use the flexi pipe only as the tail. A channel is a bedding job. Vodaland's bullets say encase the five 1 m A15 sections in concrete and do not drive over them. Clip the run, set the fall toward an outlet you have planned, and check the box first: reviewers report slipping grates and, on one delivery, missing end caps. GIONAR's catch basin and the pond hose are not fitted like a 43 mm waste, and neither is slotted land-drain coil. For a wet lawn, use perforated land drain pipe.

When you stop

Stop before you touch a public sewer, a shared drain, or a manhole that is not yours to open. Stop if foul pipe has to cross under a drive, or if a smell is still there after a new trap with the seal the appliance needs. A second bottle of cement does not cure a dry trap or a blocked stack. A basin tail, a short solvent repair you have dry-fitted, or a pedestrian channel on a patio is domestic work if you can cut square and read the tin. Anything under a drive, on a public sewer, or in a soakaway is a contractor or a building-control conversation, not another ASIN.

Common questions

Do I glue the run before I know it fits?
No. Dry-fit the whole run, including the fall and the trap, before any solvent cement. A joint that is wrong after the cement grabs has to be cut out. If the dry fit needs force, the pipes are probably different outside diameters.
How long do I wait before water goes through a solvent joint?
Follow the tin you bought. Kayflow's sheet says about 5 minutes before handling and is one maker's note. JDP says about 24 hours before a full test. Do not average those numbers. Push-fit can be tested sooner because it is a ring, not a weld, and it can still creep if it is not clipped.
How far can a 32 mm or 40 mm branch run?
Kalsi's reading of Approved Document H puts an unventilated 32 mm basin branch at up to about 1.7 m and a 40 mm branch at up to about 3 m. Longer than that needs a ventilated design. Do not hide an over-long branch with an extra solvent coupling.
How do I hold a water seal on a flexible waste?
Prefer the trap that is already there if it holds the seal for that appliance. A flexible listing may say you can bend a P-trap or an S-trap, and none of them prints a measured depth. Support the bend. One Hibbent review had no clip, and the outlet leaked.
Can I bury this amazon pipe under the drive myself?
Not from this set. The channel listing that mentions drives also says pedestrian only and not to drive over it. There is no 110 mm BS EN 1401 pipe here. Foul pipe under a drive is a point to stop and bring in a contractor.
When do I stop and call a drainage contractor?
Call one for a public sewer, a soakaway you cannot site, foul pipe under a drive, or a smell that survives a new trap. Also stop if the only way the fitting goes on is by force, or if you are about to concrete a channel that has no outlet.
