Drainage pipe buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have typed drainage pipe because water is in the wrong place, and amazon.co.uk has answered with a flexible basin waste, a metre of black PVC, a patio channel, a downpipe kit, and a hose. Those parts do not share fittings, so the first job is to name the water. This drainage pipe buying guide walks that order: job, outside diameter, joint, duty, then length and outfall. The [drainage pipe comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/drainage-pipe) holds the eleven amazon.co.uk listings and the prices in GBP. Products Compared editorial team compared those listings and public UK sources on 21 October 2026. We did not run a lab test. Which drainage job you actually have

Start with the water, not the star rating. Foul water from a basin, bath, sink, or appliance stays in the waste and soil system inside the building. Rain from a gutter or a patio is surface water. Water sitting in a lawn is groundwater, and it wants a perforated land drain with somewhere legal to discharge. If you mix those families, the fitting in your hand will not meet the pipe on the wall. JDP and B&Q split round waste by appliance, and neither treats a lawn coil as a sink waste. A pedestal basin whose bottle trap will not turn into the wall is a basin-waste problem. A 1 m solvent stick, a channel pack, or a hose titled perforated does not solve it. The joint choice sits on solvent weld or push-fit waste pipe. Lawn coil stays on perforated land drain pipe.

UK sizes and trap seals

A 50 mm waste is for a shared or commercial branch, not a single basin or sink. A WC does not go on 32 mm or 40 mm. Merchant guides treat 110 mm as the usual single-house soil and underground foul size. Nominal size is not the outside diameter. On JDP's table, 40 mm push-fit is about 41 mm outside and 40 mm solvent-weld is about 43 mm outside. The 32 mm pair is about 34 mm push-fit and about 36 mm solvent-weld. Measure the outside of the pipe on the wall before you match a fitting, and note whether the joint is solvent cement, a rubber ring, or a compression coupling.

What this comparison can and cannot sell you

This amazon.co.uk set is short lengths and kits. There is no 110 mm plain-ended underground pipe to BS EN 1401, and none of the eleven listings prints BS EN 1401 or BS 4962. A15, read the way Clark Drain explains it, is pedestrian load, and one channel listing says not to drive on the grate. A 200 mm offcut does not span a metre. Eighty-two millimetres is not 110 mm. This page does not rank the listings.

Where the water is allowed to go

A sink does not discharge to a garden soakaway. Foul water from a basin, bath, or appliance belongs in the foul drainage system, then to a drain that is allowed to take it. Rain and patio water are surface water. GOV.WALES states that surface water must not go into a foul drain. A conventional soakaway, on Eden District's building-control note, should not sit within 5 m of a building or a road, or within 2.5 m of a boundary. An area over 25 m² points to BRE Digest 365 rather than a hole dug by eye. Several listings here are 200 mm or 1 m. An unventilated branch, in installers' reading of Approved Document H, runs to about 1.7 m on 32 mm and about 3 m on 40 mm. Past that, you need ventilation or a redesign, not another metre from the same basket. Stop and call a professional for a public sewer, a soakaway you cannot site, foul pipe under a drive, or a smell that remains after a new trap.

Common questions

What size pipe does a basin need, and what size does a kitchen sink need?
A washbasin in Approved Document H is 32 mm with a 75 mm seal. A kitchen sink, washing machine, or dishwasher is 40 mm with a 75 mm seal. A bath or shower is 40 mm with a 50 mm seal. Measure the outside diameter as well, because 40 mm solvent-weld and 40 mm push-fit are different pipes.
Is 110 mm the pipe for a toilet, and is it in this comparison?
Yes for a typical single-house WC and stack: merchant guides treat 110 mm as the usual soil size. No, it is not in this comparison. None of the eleven listings is a 110 mm BS EN 1401 underground pipe. The 82 mm stick is a different diameter.
Can one drainage pipe cover a sink and a lawn?
No. A sink waste is a small foul pipe with a trap. A wet lawn needs slotted land-drain coil and a lawful outfall, which this set does not include. Buying one listing for both jobs leaves one of them unconnected.
When do I need 50 mm instead of 40 mm?
Use 50 mm when several appliances share a branch or the run is in the commercial range that JDP and Drainage Superstore describe. A single basin stays on 32 mm. A single sink stays on 40 mm. Do not step up a size to compensate for a fitting that will not go on.
Does a flexible waste replace the trap size in Approved Document H?
No. You can bend a flexible waste into a trap shape, and some listings say so. Seal depth is not measured on those pages. Keep a trap that already holds the seal in the table, or fit a trap whose depth you can check.
What should I measure before I order fittings?
Measure the outside diameter of the pipe you are joining to, and note whether the joint is solvent-weld, push-fit, or a thread. Write the length of the gap in millimetres. A nominal 40 mm label is not that measurement. Take the fitting to the pipe if you can, before any cement.
