Covering school exercise books: width, metres, and a micron

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are counting a September pile, and the cheapest clear roll is not automatically the one that fits an exercise book. Covering school exercise books starts with width and length for one child. A class, or a club that is not ordering a 25 m trade roll yet, needs a printed micron and a printed length. This page stays on that quantity. Prices are the saved amazon.co.uk figures on the [Cover film comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/cover-film). No roll was lab-tested. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

One child’s exercise books

For many exercise books, about 30–33 cm is the household start, on a short gridded roll of about 2–3 m. You do not need 10 m for three books and a reading record. In this set the 33 cm by 3 m rolls are G4GADGET at about £5.98, rated 4.4 from 6,914 reviews, and Hydia at about £4.99, rated 4.2 from 553 reviews. Mayfair describe 33 cm as suited to A4 books. That is not a count of books per metre. Both 33 cm listings leave the polymer unnamed. Backing tears on G4GADGET, and Hydia’s edge sticks to itself if you rush. HERMA’s width here is 40 cm, with polypropylene named, at about £3.95 for 2 m or about £4.95 for 3 m. The checklist is the book covering film buying guide.

Textbooks that open wider

Measure the book open, including the border you will fold under, before you trust a width slogan. About 45–50 cm is where the film has to span a large open book or a page longer than A4. Mayfair point 50 cm at books longer than A4. Hope list 500 mm for larger books, not as the default for a normal exercise book. Neither gives a books-per-metre figure. G4GADGET at 50 cm is about £11.99, rated 4.4 from 2,529 reviews, and the unit-count field says 1.0 metre while the title says 50 cm by 10 m. Hawksbill at 500 mm by 10 m is about £10.54 from two reviews. A conditional pick is best book covering film.

A class or a club

When you need a micron on the label and enough metres for a group, you have left the short amazon roll. ESPO lists polypropylene at 25 m and 50 micron, in 250 mm, 330 mm or 500 mm, from £4.50 excluding VAT. Hope list Classmates film at 50 micron, in 20 m and 70 m. KPC’s 80 micron film starts from £11.30. Those specifications are not hidden details of the ten ASINs here. A two-review listing does not replace that specification. Hawksbill’s 5.0 from two reviews is the thin sample. Only the HERMA rolls name polypropylene beside the price. Hode and Fantasnight name polyvinyl chloride and point at walls as well as books. The 0.2 mm field does not match one Fantasnight review at about 0.07 mm, and neither figure is 50 micron written as a school specification. A small club that only needs a few metres of named polypropylene can stay with HERMA’s 2 m or 3 m roll.

What you can send back

Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject, normally about 30 days, when goods are not as described. For these rolls that means length and finish: a 10 m title against a 1.0 metre unit count, or gloss when you ordered matt, if that is what arrives. The right sits against the seller. It is not a wear test after a term in a school bag. A textbook the school expects back unmarked is a reason to avoid glue. That is not a school rule this page can invent. Use non adhesive book cover film when the cover has to stay bare. The peel itself is how to cover school books.

Common questions

Is 33 cm wide enough for an exercise book?
For many exercise books, yes. About 30–33 cm is the household start, and Mayfair describe 33 cm as suited to A4 books. You still need a border to fold in, so a book already close to 33 cm once open can need 40 cm or about 50 cm. Measure the open book, including the turn-in, before you buy the narrower roll.
When do I need about 50 cm?
When the film has to span a large open book or a document longer than A4. Mayfair use 50 cm for that case and still give no books-per-metre figure. Hope list 500 mm for larger books, not as the default exercise-book width. In this set, check G4GADGET’s 50 cm title against a unit count that says 1.0 metre before you plan the pile around 10 m.
Why do schools buy 25 m at 50 micron?
Because a class needs metres and a gauge you can read on the label. ESPO lists 25 m of polypropylene at 50 micron, from £4.50 excluding VAT. Hope list 20 m and 70 m at 50 micron. KPC’s 80 micron roll starts from £11.30. A 3 m amazon roll can suit one child’s books and still not be that specification.
Does a two-review 10 m roll replace a school roll?
No. Hawksbill’s 500 mm by 10 m title is rated 5.0 from two reviews. The polymer is not named, and a 0.1 cm figure on the dimensions line is not confirmed as the film gauge. A school catalogue roll prints 50 micron, or 80 micron at the KPC end, and a length such as 20 m or 25 m. Two reviews do not become that label because the stars are perfect.
What should I do if the roll is shorter than the title?
You may have a short-term right to reject under section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, normally about 30 days, where the goods are not as described. A 10 m title against a 1.0 metre unit count is that kind of mismatch if the roll in your hand is the short one. Write to the seller inside that window and keep the listing.
