Non adhesive book cover film or sticky back plastic

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are in the hall with exercise books and a paperback you might lend, and the search has mixed two products. Non adhesive book cover film is a wrap with no glue. Sticky back plastic meets the cover and is meant to stay. This page is that fork, not a ranking of the nine sticky rolls on the [Cover film comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/cover-film). Prices are saved amazon.co.uk figures. Nothing here was lab-tested. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Glue on a book you will keep using

Sticky film is for a book that is yours and that you are happy to commit to for the term. Nine of the ten listings here are self-adhesive. HERMA 7002 and HERMA 7003 name polypropylene, 2 m and 3 m by 40 cm, at about £3.95 and about £4.95. G4GADGET’s 33 cm by 3 m roll is about £5.98, and the material field only says Plastic. None of the three is crowned here. They are the sticky type: a liner, often a grid, and adhesive meant to meet paper. HERMA buyers often find the adhesive light: film lifts within minutes, or will not hold cardboard. G4GADGET reviews go both ways, and the backing tears when the sheet is rushed. A repositionable bullet is a short window, not a clean peel in July. The plastic name is checked on the book covering film buying guide.

A wrap you can take off

If the glue must not touch the paper, the only match in this set is HERMA 7360: about £2.62 for 2 m by 40 cm, rated 4.0 from 6,293 reviews. The closure field says Slip-On. There is no release liner. HERMA’s UK page describes ref. 7360 as colourless polypropylene, and not adhesive. One person covered 2 A5 and 3 A4 textbooks from that 2 m. That is one report. The same sample calls it thinner than bookshop wrap, slippery, and hard to fold on a thick hardback. Tape did not stick for one buyer. People who wanted sticky film for exercise books could not stick this one down. Hands for the fold are on how to cover school books. The title and the bullets say matt polypropylene and PVC free. The material-type field says Plastic, Polyurethane. Keep both names. A matt finish is not an approval from the National Archives.

Removable on the label is not this fork

Hode at about £6.99 and Fantasnight at about £7.99 mention books and also say the film can be lifted without residue. That sentence is not HERMA 7360. Both are self-adhesive PVC, and their uses fields point at walls and furniture. Hode reviews include paint pulled off plaster. A no-residue bullet is a claim about sticky PVC, and the reviews do not support an easy lift off emulsion. Do not carry that paint-pull complaint across to every polypropylene book roll. The weak-tack HERMA films lift off paper. They are not, in this set, the film that strips a kitchen wall. If you want the paperback bare again, buy the wrap. A named pick for a short sticky job or for the wrap is best book covering film.

Books that should get neither

An ordinary exercise book is not a rare book. The National Archives leaflet Caring for your Books treats yellowing self-adhesive tapes and unskilled DIY repairs as damage on books that matter. Leave a rare, inscribed, or already taped volume alone and call a conservator. That is not a school-book method, and it does not mean the Archives approve any roll here. Stop if the book is damp or mouldy, because film holds moisture against the paper. A paperback you might sell is closer to the wrap than to sticky film, though a shop’s return rule is not on these listings. Slip-on library jackets are a third product and they are not in this ASIN table. Slip-On on HERMA 7360 only names the closure of a film you cut and tape.

Common questions

Will sticky film come off later?
Sometimes, and not on a timetable you can plan. On the light-tack polypropylene rolls, reviewers report film that unsticks within minutes or will not hold cardboard. On the PVC wall films, Hode reviews include paint pulled off plaster. A repositionable bullet is a short window during application, not a plan to peel the cover clean in July.
What holds a non-adhesive wrap on?
Folds and small pieces of tape hold it, not adhesive on the cover. HERMA 7360 has no release liner, and the closure field says Slip-On. The amazon listing does not print the steps, and tape failed to stick to the film for one buyer, so a thick hardback can be fiddly. Do not lay a second sticky film over the wrap to make it stay.
Is HERMA 7360 polypropylene or polyurethane?
Both names are in the sources, and this comparison does not choose between them. The title, the bullets, and HERMA’s UK page say polypropylene, not adhesive, and PVC free. The amazon material-type field says Plastic, Polyurethane. Treat that clash as unresolved. Do not drop one name because the other appears on more lines of the listing, and do not treat either name as a lab result from this set.
Is a repositionable claim the same as non-adhesive?
No. Repositionable, on the sticky listings, means you may still lift a corner while you are laying the sheet. Non-adhesive means there is no glue on the film at all. HERMA 7360 is the second kind. Hode’s line about unpeeling the film to correct a mistake is the first kind, on a PVC roll whose reviews include paint pull. Read the closure field and the material before you trust the adjective on the bullet.
Are slip-on jackets the same as HERMA 7360?
No. A slip-on jacket is a ready sleeve that slides over a hardback. It is a different product, and it is not one of the ten ASINs here. HERMA 7360 is a 2 m by 40 cm film you cut, fold, and tape. The word Slip-On in its closure field describes that wrap. It does not mean a library jacket from another catalogue has been included in the comparison.
