Concealed hinge buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are holding a UK cupboard door, and the hinge that came off it does not match the packet in your other hand. A concealed hinge can be a 35 mm cup, a surface plate, or a mortise for a thick door, and the title will not say which. This concealed hinge buying guide puts measurements first: how the door sits, then the cup and the plate, then the close. Price is the last line. The twelve listings on the [concealed hinges comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/concealed-hinges) cover all of those families, so a high star rating on the wrong family will not close a shared partition. Two products share the name

On a kitchen catalogue, a concealed hinge usually means a cup in a round hole, so you do not see a knuckle when the door is shut. In this amazon.co.uk set that is only one of the products using the words. The Furniware 4-pack and the Kamtop 20-pack are 35 mm full-overlay cups for frameless cabinets. The Furniware 10-pack is a full-overlay clip-on too, though it prints a 13.5 mm cup depth and leaves the diameter unstated. Beside those cups sit surface hinges, a wide-angle hinge for corners and flaps, and mortise hinges for thick doors rather than cupboard sides.

Overlay before brand

On a frameless cabinet the closed door covers the side panel, covers part of it, or sits inside the opening. Häfele’s UK cabinet-hinge FAQ maps that to crank: about 0 mm for full overlay, about 8 mm for half overlay, and about 15 mm for inset. Those millimetres are Häfele’s map, not a figure on a Furniware or Kamtop bullet. Half overlay is what you need when two doors share one partition. A full-overlay hinge on that stile makes the two doors fight for the same timber. Kamtop states frameless full overlay only. Two surface packs claim full, half and inset on the same product. Treat that as a listing claim, not as three proven cranks.

Cup depth and the plate

A shared 35 mm diameter does not mean two hinges share a hole. Häfele’s drilling note uses a 45 mm screw pattern and a 9.5 mm reference. That pattern is Häfele’s, not a measured fact on every listing here. The Furniware 4-pack prints 35 mm, 11.5 mm depth and 45 mm hole distance, with doors of 14–22 mm. The 10-pack prints 13.5 mm depth and does not print the diameter. You cannot put the face back if the bit breaks through an 18 mm door. Clip-on and slide-on are different families. Keep the old plate only when the new hinge is the same family and the holes match.

What to write down

Write five lines before you sort by price. Overlay: full, half or inset, judged with the door closed. Cup: diameter and depth, or no cup if the door is plain. Plate: clip-on, slide-on or screw-on, and whether you are keeping the old one. Thickness: measure the door, then read the band the listing prints. The two Furniware cup packs state 14–22 mm. The wide-angle surface hinge states 16–30 mm. Close: damper, spring, or not stated. Prices in this set, captured on 19 October 2026, run from about £9.99 to about £26.99, roughly £1.35 to £3.25 a cabinet hinge. Pack size does not repair a wrong overlay.

Common questions

Is a concealed hinge the same as a 35 mm kitchen hinge?
Often, on a cupboard, yes. A 35 mm cup is the usual concealed kitchen hinge. This set also lists surface hinges with no cup, and mortise hinges for thick doors, under similar titles. If your door has a round hole, you want a cup whose depth matches that hole. If it has never been bored, a surface hinge is a different product.
How do I tell full overlay from half overlay and inset?
Close the door and look at the side panel. If the door covers it, you are in full overlay. If two doors share a partition and each covers about half of it, you want half overlay. If the door sits inside the opening, you want inset. Häfele’s UK FAQ puts those cases at about 0 mm, 8 mm and 15 mm of crank. Those figures are Häfele’s, not a Furniware measurement.
Does every 35 mm hinge share the same cup depth and screw pattern?
No. The Furniware 4-pack states 11.5 mm depth. The Furniware 10-pack states 13.5 mm, and a UK review said an old MFI hole was too shallow for it. Häfele’s 45 mm pattern with a 9.5 mm reference is that brand’s drilling note. One Furniware buyer found the new screw pattern did not match the old holes.
Do I need a new mounting plate when I change brand?
Usually, unless the clip or slide family and the hole spacing match the plate you are keeping. Kamtop is frameless full overlay only. A plate that did not match the photograph, which one Kamtop buyer reported, will not sit on the old screws. Ikea is not claimed on the TASMIA pack, and one review said it did not fit.
What door thickness do these packs actually state?
The Furniware 4-pack and the Furniware 10-pack state 14–22 mm. The wide-angle surface hinge states 16–30 mm. Kamtop and the TASMIA 10-pack do not state door thickness. Measure the door. A blank on the listing is a blank, not a promise that 18 mm chipboard will suit the arm.
When is a surface hinge the right buy instead of a cup?
When you cannot bore a 35 mm hole, or the door was never cupped. UK reviewers cite a wardrobe converted from sliding doors for the Furniware 90° pack. It opens to 90°, and the adjustment is described as less than a bored kitchen hinge. It is the wrong buy if you already have a sound cup of the right depth.
