Blum hinge soft close not working

Updated: 23 October 2026

The cupboard door used to ease shut. Now it bangs, creeps, or stops short. A Blum hinge soft close not working is usually the damper switch, two dampers on a light door, or a worn damper. The spring remains, so the door can still shut hard. That is separate from push-to-open. The [Blum hinges comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/blum-hinges) shows which amazon.co.uk packs claim BLUMOTION. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, used Blum's kit notes and listing reviews, not a test rig. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Too slow or stops short

A light door with two dampers often closes too slowly, or stops short so you finish the close by hand. Blum's CLIP top BLUMOTION leaflet says you deactivate one hinge, then close once. Leave the second damper on. Switching both off leaves only the spring. Hinges ship with the switch on I. Slide it to 0, then close once to deactivate. Slide it back to I and close once more to turn the damper on. Skip that close and the damper stays as it was. On a pair, move only one switch. A review of B0D8KXJ31F says both dampers made the door too slow, so one was disabled. If the door is still short, look for a rub. Cup depth is on the how to fit Blum hinges page.

It slams

A bang means the damper is missing the last part of the close. If the mark is on 0, slide it to I and close once. An easy close after that means the hinge was only deactivated. If it still slams with both hinges on I, the damper in the cup is the next suspect. A review of B06XCJ63G5 says soft close failed on a heavily used bin door after about three years. That span points to a worn damper. Replace the hinge. A switch on B072JL31HC helps only while the damper still resists. A door that slammed from the day you fitted it needs the switch and a binding check before you treat it as failed stock.

Hinges in this set with no BLUMOTION line

The face-frame COMPACT and the 60° bi-fold do not claim integrated BLUMOTION. In this set that is B0CHK5TRMB and B001DT130I. There is no I and 0 slide. A star rating on another ASIN does not add a damper. An overlay 110° hinge will not clip to a face-frame plate. The best Blum cabinet hinges page is for packs that claim the damper. If the listing never says BLUMOTION, stop looking for a switch.

Damper off is not push-to-open

On a light door that creeps, set one damper to 0 and close once before you touch the second hinge. On a door that has slammed for years, replace the hinge and keep a plate whose slots still match.

Common questions

Why does the door close too slowly?
Two BLUMOTION dampers on a small or light door brake harder than the spring can finish. Blum's leaflet says to deactivate one hinge and close the door once, leaving the other damper on. A review of B0D8KXJ31F reports that when both dampers made the door too slow. The bullets there do not name the switch, so use the I and 0 marks on the hinge. If one damper off still leaves the door short, look for a rub or a proud door first.
Where is the BLUMOTION switch?
It is a small slide on the hinge, marked I and 0. Hinges ship on I, damper active. 0 deactivates it. B0D8KXJ31F's bullets do not name the switch, though a review describes turning one damper off. B072JL31HC and other overlay packs do state a switch. Face-frame B0CHK5TRMB and bi-fold B001DT130I do not claim BLUMOTION, so they have no switch. Look on the hinge you fitted.
Do I have to shut the door after I move the switch?
Yes. Blum's kit note says you slide the switch and then close the door once. That close deactivates the damper. A further close turns it back on after you return the switch to I. Walk away without closing and the old state stays. On a light door, change one hinge, then try a full close before you touch the second. If the door slams, restore I and close once more.
Why does the door still spring shut with the damper off?
The spring is separate from the damper. Switch BLUMOTION to 0, close the door once, and the soft catch at the end of the swing is off. The spring remains, so the door can still pull shut, often with a bang. That is how these hinges are built. TIP-ON is a different system, push-to-open, named only as combinable on B0D8LBHTW7 and B0D8KXJ31F. Those two packs stay soft-close hinges.
Is a slam after three years the switch or a dead damper?
Check the switch first. On 0, set it to I and close once. If it is already on I and the door still slams, the damper is the likely failure, above all on a door you open all day. A review of B06XCJ63G5 describes soft close failing on a heavily used bin door after about three years. Replace that hinge. These listings offer no lifetime guarantee, and a US mail-in warranty is not evidence for a UK amazon.co.uk pack.
Is TIP-ON the same as turning the damper off?
Damper off leaves the spring, so the door still closes, without the soft finish. TIP-ON is push-to-open. Here it appears only as combinable on B0D8LBHTW7 and B0D8KXJ31F, and those packs are BLUMOTION hinges. A TIP-ON accessory will not stop a slam from a switch left on 0, or from a damper worn out over years. Move the switch, close once, and only then decide if the cup needs replacing.
