Bioethanol vs methylated spirits

Updated: 23 October 2026

The methylated spirits is already under the sink, and the fireplace manual asks for bioethanol. Both liquids are denatured alcohol, which is why the swap feels obvious. It is the wrong default for a living-room burner. This bioethanol vs methylated spirits page is about when the fireplace bottle is the one to buy, and when a camping-stove manual still allows meths. It is not a stove review. Prices and review notes are from the amazon.co.uk listings in our [bioethanol comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/bioethanol), stored on 19 October 2026. Same family, different bottle

Methylated spirits and these fireplace bottles are both denatured alcohol. Excise Notice 473 says completely denatured alcohol may be used for heating and lighting, industrial denatured alcohol may not, and you must not purify or redistil it. None of that is permission to pour meths into a bioethanol fireplace or to mix the two. Meths is sold as a solvent and a stove fuel, usually with a stronger denaturant smell. The colour of the tin does not clear meths for a fireplace. Percentage and cap are in the bioethanol fuel buying guide.

What the fire services say to burn

Warwickshire says use only bioethanol fuel designed for that burner. Devon and Somerset says use the fuel the appliance specifies, because another fuel can smoke or raise the fire risk. RoSPA’s line is the same shape. If the manual names bioethanol, meths is not a trial. White spirit, petrol and gel are different products again. An odourless claim on a listing does not clear the tin under the sink. Green Haven reviewers often report less soot than meths, and a smell as the flame goes out. That is experience with one fuel, not a licence to pour the other. If the fireplace manual is silent, use a bioethanol liquid sold for that appliance.

When a camping stove is a separate decision

A Trangia-style stove is not the fireplace. Some stove manuals allow methylated spirits. Some allow a bioethanol sold as a meths replacement. EkoFuel’s FAQ says its own fuel can replace meths in alcohol camping stoves. That claim is for a brand that is not an ASIN here, and it does not rewrite the manual in the lid. Shared Green Haven reviews often say the fuel soots less than meths in a Trangia. Those comments are not an approval, and they do not clear meths for the living room afterwards. If the stove manual names meths, keep meths for the stove. If it names a bioethanol of a stated purity, use a bottle here only when the percentage matches. Green Haven 2 litres states 96%. EcoLine states 96.6%. The scented packs state none.

Which way to choose

For the fireplace, buy the liquid the manual names and leave the meths in the cupboard. A lower price per litre does not turn a bioethanol bottle into meths. For the stove, open that manual: meths if it still specifies meths, and a bioethanol bottle only if it allows that fuel. Do not treat a Trangia comment on an amazon.co.uk page as the manual, and do not mix the two. Pouring and cool-down are on how to use bioethanol fuel.

Fireplace bottle or stove tin

If the fireplace manual names bioethanol, buy that liquid and leave the methylated spirits in the cupboard. If the camping-stove manual still names meths, keep meths for the stove. A shared review that mentions less soot in a Trangia is not permission to swap the fuels the other way. If either manual is silent, check the maker before you pour.

Common questions

Can I pour methylated spirits into a bioethanol fireplace?
No. Warwickshire says to use only bioethanol fuel designed for the burner, and Devon and Somerset warn that the wrong fuel can smoke or raise the fire risk. Meths and fireplace bioethanol are both denatured alcohol, which does not make them interchangeable. If the manual names bioethanol, that is the bottle to buy.
Can I use this bioethanol in a Trangia?
Only if that stove’s manual allows this fuel. Green Haven reviewers on the shared amazon.co.uk file often say it soots less than methylated spirits in a Trangia, and some still mention a smell. Those comments are not an approval. EkoFuel’s claim that its own fuel can replace meths in alcohol stoves does not cover these ASINs or your stove.
Why does meths smell and soot more in the reviews?
Reviewers comparing Green Haven with methylated spirits often describe less soot and a milder smell once the flame is going. Trangia Fuel’s guide calls meths more heavily denatured and more odorous. That is user and enthusiast experience, not a laboratory ranking. The same Green Haven reviews still complain about a strong smell as the flame goes out.
Are both just denatured alcohol?
They are in the same broad family. HMRC’s Excise Notice 473 distinguishes completely denatured alcohol, which may be used for heating and lighting, from industrial denatured alcohol, which may not, and it forbids purifying or redistilling completely denatured alcohol. That notice is not permission to swap a meths tin for a fireplace bottle.
Which bottle in this set do reviewers name for a stove?
The shared Green Haven reviews are the ones that mention a Trangia, usually to say the fuel soots less than meths. EcoLine’s sampled reviews are mainly about fireplaces, pour smell and burn time. Neither file is a stove certificate. Scented packs are a poor stove choice because they state no purity.
What if the stove manual is silent?
Do not guess with meths in the fireplace, and do not guess with fireplace fuel in the stove. Use the fuel the fireplace manual names for the fireplace. For a silent stove manual, check the stove maker before you pour either liquid. A missing sentence is not a trial invitation.
