Bioethanol fuel indoor

Updated: 23 October 2026

The burner was sold as needing no chimney, and the amazon.co.uk bottle says indoor use and vent free. That pairing is how a flat ends up with a flame in a shut living room. Bioethanol fuel indoor use is still a ventilated-room decision. The fuel uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide, water vapour and, as RoSPA states, carbon monoxide. No flue does not mean no fumes. This page is for a living room or a flat. The six bottles are in our [bioethanol comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/bioethanol). Peter F. did not test these bottles in a room. No chimney is not the same as no fumes

A flueless bioethanol fire has no chimney. RoSPA says use an indoor fire only if the appliance is designed for indoors, ventilate, and avoid a small, poorly ventilated room. The fuel produces carbon monoxide, which you cannot smell, so little odour is not a clearance. Commission Decision (EU) 2015/547, still on legislation.gov.uk, required a label that these appliances are only for a well-ventilated room. BS EN 16647-1:2025, the standard RoSPA cites, covers a manually operated decorative fire, not a heater above 4.5 kW. Do not follow a seller line that ventilation is unnecessary because the bottle says vent free, or because plants absorb carbon dioxide.

The alarm and the room

Warwickshire advises a carbon monoxide alarm to BS EN 50291, with a Kitemark, and says to test it. Ventilation means a window you can open, or extraction that is really running, not a boxroom with the door shut. If you cannot ventilate for the whole burn, do not light it. If anyone feels unwell, snuff the flame if you can do it safely, get fresh air, and get help. The wait before a later refill is on how to use bioethanol fuel.

What the bottles in this set actually say

The plain bottles are listed for indoor and outdoor use, and they carry a vent-free attribute. That attribute is not a room clearance. The Green Haven 6 litre bullets claim an indoor burn, while the page asks whether the fuel is safe indoors and does not answer in its own block. The scented packs also say indoor, with no stated purity, and they cancel delivery to Northern Ireland, the Scottish isles, the Channel Islands and offshore addresses. Receiving the parcel still does not make indoor mean unventilated. Which bottle fits a first litre, if you will ventilate, is on best bioethanol fuel UK.

When to stop

Do not light the fire if you cannot ventilate the room, if you have no working carbon monoxide alarm, or if the appliance is not the indoor model the manual describes. Do not leave it burning when you leave the flat, and do not use it to warm a bedroom overnight. A flame you cannot see is still a flame. A heating line of 200-300 sq ft on the Green Haven 12 litre file is a catalogue attribute, not a measured output. If the alarm sounds, get out and get help.

Ventilate, or do not light it

Use an indoor-rated burner only in a room you can ventilate, with a carbon monoxide alarm to BS EN 50291 that you have tested. A vent-free line on the bottle does not clear a shut living room. If you cannot open a window or run extraction for the whole burn, leave the fire unlit. The comparison of the six bottles does not change that limit.

Common questions

Can I use the fuel indoors if the listing says vent free?
Only in an indoor-rated burner, in a room you can ventilate. RoSPA says the fuel produces carbon monoxide and that a small, poorly ventilated room is the wrong place. Several bottles in this set, including Green Haven and EcoLine, carry a vent-free attribute and an indoor-use line. That attribute is not a clearance to shut the doors and windows.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?
Yes, if you burn this fuel indoors. Warwickshire advises an alarm to BS EN 50291 with a Kitemark, and says to test it. Greater Manchester recommends a carbon monoxide detector as well as smoke alarms on each floor. The alarm sits alongside an open window or working extraction. It does not replace the air.
What are the symptoms to act on?
Warwickshire lists headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion and breathlessness. Carbon monoxide does not rely on a fuel smell to warn you. If anyone feels like that while the fire is alight, put the flame out with the snuffer if you can do it safely, get everyone into fresh air, and get help. Do not wait indoors to see if it eases.
Will the room smell?
It might, and the smell is not the safety measure. EcoLine reviews mention a smell when pouring and, in one case, a smell upstairs. Green Haven reviews often mention a stronger smell as the flame goes out. Scented packs are frequently described as faint while burning. Little smell does not mean little carbon monoxide.
Is a bioethanol fire a heater for a flat?
No. BS EN 16647-1:2025, the decorative-fire standard RoSPA cites, is not a heating appliance above 4.5 kW. A 200-300 sq ft line on the Green Haven 12 litre listing is a catalogue attribute, not a measured output. Use the fire as a flame you watch in a ventilated room, and heat the flat with something built for heating.
Which bottles in this set say indoor use?
Green Haven’s 2 litre, 6 litre and 12 litre listings and B2C EcoLine’s 1 litre listing say indoor and outdoor, and they carry a vent-free attribute. The two scented packs say indoor use as well, with no stated purity, and they cancel delivery to Northern Ireland and to island and offshore addresses. Indoor wording on the bottle does not remove the ventilation rule.
