How to fit barge flashing on sheets, or tape on a patch

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are ready to fit barge flashing, either a folded cover on profiled sheets or a strip of repair tape on a leak you can reach safely. The two jobs do not share an overlap or a screw. Mix them up and a 200 mm metal lap lands on a lead abutment, or a 25 mm tape lap is asked to hold a gable. The [barge flashing comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/barge-flashing) shows the three amazon.co.uk listings we kept, and the [buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/barge-flashing/sub/barge-flashing-buying-guide) is where the type is chosen. We did not fit a roof. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you go up

Name the roof while you are still on the ground. Profiled metal sheets can take a folded barge, fixed the way that barge's maker describes. A lead, felt, or gutter patch can take tape if the surface is sound, clean, and dry. Tiles and slates are a verge, not a strip along the board. That choice is on dry verge or barge flashing. Access comes before any screw. HSE roof-work guidance treats a roof as fragile until it is confirmed otherwise, and it says to avoid work at height where you can. This page does not describe ladder technique. If the only way onto the edge is a ladder against a domestic roof, call a roofer. When you handle folded metal, Cladco asks for cut level 5 gloves. One Winfox review describes a cut on a dented start of the roll.

Fitting a folded barge on sheets

What follows is Cladco's instruction for its own barges. It is not a method for the tape in the amazon.co.uk set. Cladco sells barges in 3 m lengths. When you measure, add 200 mm for each length so the pieces can lap. Further lengths overlap by at least 200 mm. The fixing they specify is a 22 mm stitcher screw through the crest of the sheet, with colour caps, no more than 400 mm apart on flashings. If the barge overhangs a wall, they ask for timber support. The guide's 250 mm end lap is for sheets. Do not copy 250 mm onto lead. A 6 m gable is two of the 3 m pieces only if you ignore the lap. Add at least 200 mm and the run needs more than 6 m of metal. Screw through the crest, not through the pan where water sits. The three kept listings do not include stitchers, colour caps, or a crest diagram.

Sticking a repair tape

Tape starts only when you are patching, not when you are covering a gable. For Bostik Flashband, fill gaps over 3 mm before you stick. The surface should be clean and dry, and the application window is about +5°C to +30°C. If the air is below about +15°C, warm the roll. Porous or cold faces take the primer, and the sheet says not to leave primer in place for more than 24 hours. Press the strip with a seam roller. On long runs over plastic, that sheet uses short lengths of about 500 mm with about 25 mm laps. Those 25 mm laps are not the 200 mm overlap of a folded barge. One verified review used the recommended primer at a lean-to junction and still saw the tape slip after about four to five months. The silver Target Control listing caps the upper temperature at 45°C. Do not borrow Flashband's window and stick it on the silver roll.

Where this set gives you no method

The Winfox coil does not come with a fitting sequence. A UK review says scissors will not cut it. The title says 4 inches by 20 feet and 0.2 mm. The package line says 5 x 3 x 3 cm and 100 g. There is no screw pattern, no lap, and no adhesive. Confirm the length on arrival, and do not invent a crest-screw layout for 0.2 mm aluminium. A shed patch you can do from the ground, on a sound dry surface, inside the tape's temperature window, is the job these rolls can support. A gable on a fragile sheet, or a chased abutment, is not.

When you stop and call a roofer

Stop when the work is at height on a house roof, when the sheets may be fragile, when the edge is tiles rather than profiled metal, or when failed lead needs soakers rather than a stick-down patch. Gloves and a seam roller do not change the fall risk. If your sheets need the crest-screw sequence, order the folded barge from a sheet-roof supplier and follow that supplier's sheet.

Common questions

How much do barge flashings overlap?
On Cladco's own barges, further lengths overlap by at least 200 mm, and you add 200 mm per length before you cut. Flashband on plastic is about 25 mm on lengths of about 500 mm. Use 200 mm only on the folded barge that instruction was written for.
Where do the screws go?
Cladco specifies a 22 mm stitcher through the crest, with colour caps, no more than 400 mm apart on flashings. The crest is the raised part, so the screw is not in the pan. Those screws are not in the box with the three amazon.co.uk rolls.
How do I stick Flashband in cold weather?
Bostik's UK sheet puts application at about +5°C to +30°C. Below about +15°C, warm the roll. The surface has to be clean and dry, gaps over 3 mm filled, and porous faces primed for no more than 24 hours. If the day is colder than the window, wait.
Can I fit a house verge from a ladder?
This page will not set out a ladder method. HSE roof-work guidance treats roofs as fragile until confirmed otherwise and tells you to avoid work at height where you can. If you cannot reach a sound patch from a safe place, stop and use a roofer.
How do I fix the 0.2 mm coil?
The listing does not say. A review says scissors will not cut it and that the edges are sharp. There is no lap and no screw layout. Do not treat it as a barge you can fasten like Cladco's 0.7 mm piece until you know the length that arrived.
