How to fit an anti vibration mat under a washing machine

Updated: 23 October 2026

The machine is boxed in by a worktop, the hose is short, and the mat is still in the hallway. How to fit an anti vibration mat under a washing machine starts with the plug and the transit bolts, not with the rubber. You are trying to get a sheet or four pads in place without pulling a fill hose or a drain, then to check the first spin before you push the cabinet home. Cut sizes and weights are on the [anti vibration mat comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/anti-vibration-mat). This follows maker guidance and the fitting limits in these reviews, not a workshop trial. Before you pull the machine out

Unplug the machine. Close the taps if you will move the inlet hoses. Slide only as far as the hoses allow, and do not use a hose as a handle. A split inlet is a leak, and a mat will not fix it. Take the transit bolts out and fit the blanks. Bosch UK puts that first, because a bolted drum will shake whatever you put underneath. Stop if the next step is opening a panel. FaultAid treats suspension and bearings as an engineer’s visit. The 20 mm Mario10 sheet weighs 5.84 kg and the 10 mm sheet 3.68 kg. Vinyl offcuts appear as sliders in reviews. Do not copy a spray lubricant on the floor. That is a slip hazard.

Level and measure the gap

Level each foot so the cabinet does not rock, then lock the nuts. A mat will not correct a foot that is wound fully in. Bosch suggests a water-resistant board of at least 30 mm on a wooden floor. That board is not a 10 mm rubber sheet. Sound Service wants a thin board so the feet do not sink. One Paxanpax review says sinking is what anchors the mat. If you add a board, count the height. The 10 mm Mario10 sheet blocked one dryer water-collector door. If the gap is only a few millimetres, use pads. Cutting a sheet smaller does not make it thinner.

Getting a full sheet in

Cut to the footprint with a sharp knife and keep the other hand clear. Sound Service’s note is that order: cut, loose-fit a thin board if you are using one, then set the appliance down. The 10 mm Mario10, Loxley, Paxanpax bullets, FUX, and Yattuyix say they can be cut. The 20 mm Mario10 title does not. One reviewer cut that sheet in half anyway. Leave enough rubber that the feet cannot walk off the edge. Push back only while you can see the hoses. If a hose would have to stretch, switch format. That choice is on anti vibration mat or pads.

Pads, the first spin, and when to stop

Pads go under the feet, not beside them. A FUX review describes pads next to the feet, which left the cabinet on the floor. Lift one corner at a time until all four are supported. FUX pads are 15 mm. The LouMaxx titles are 10 mm and 15 mm. haomeiduo’s field is about 2.18 cm and does not match the title. Run a short spin while you can still pull the machine out. The noise drops and does not disappear. Stop when the drum knocks with the bolts out, a foot will not wind, or you would have to open the cabinet.

Common questions

How do you slide a sheet under a worktop?
Unplug first, move the machine only as far as the hoses allow, and use a slider or lift one side. Reviewers used vinyl offcuts. One reviewer of the 20 mm sheet cut it in half and slid each half under a raised side, even though that listing does not say it can be cut. If the hoses go tight, stop. Pads under the feet are the alternative when the sheet will not pass.
Should you put a board on top of the rubber?
Sound Service says a thin board stops the feet sinking into the pad. Bosch, for an unsuitable wooden floor, wants a water-resistant board of at least 30 mm, which is a different job from a 10 mm mat. One review quotes an engineer who treated sinking as what holds the mat still. If you add any board, count it in the height under the worktop and the dryer door.
Can you cut the mat, and with what?
Use a sharp knife and keep the other hand clear of the blade. Sound Service’s note is to cut to the footprint. In this set the 10 mm Mario10, Loxley, Paxanpax bullets, FUX, and Yattuyix say they can be cut. The 20 mm Mario10 listing does not. Cutting changes the area, not the thickness. Leave enough rubber that the feet cannot walk off the edge.
What if the dryer door will not open afterwards?
The added height is too much for that stack. A UK review of the 10 mm Mario10 sheet said the water-collector door would not open. Take the sheet out, or move to thinner pads, and measure the door swing before you refit. Do not force the door against the rubber. Forcing it marks the panel and does not make the stack lower.
When do you stop and call someone?
Stop when the next step is opening the cabinet, when the drum knocks after the transit bolts are out, or when a foot will not level. Those point to suspension or another internal fault, which FaultAid treats as an engineer job, especially on a machine that is still under warranty. Also stop if the only way to fit the mat is to pull on a hose. A leak is not worth the pad.
