Foil trays with lids

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are packing leftovers for the freezer, or sending a portion home, and the open roasting tin will not travel. Foil trays with lids only work when the lid was sold for that rim, when you take the lid off to heat the food, and when you do not throw a card lid in the metal recycling because the base is aluminium. The [aluminium trays comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/aluminium-trays) is where the open trays are scored. Prices are the captured shelf prices in GBP. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. used those listings and the stored review notes.

Portion packs in this comparison

Zuvo’s B07GS39XBQ is 50 trays and cardboard lids at £10.99, about 20 × 8 × 6 cm and 600 ml, with 4.6 from 3,789 reviews. One reviewer says the foil is sturdy and the supplied lids do not fit, so food leaks. Other reviews write the dish name on the card. A lid that misses the rim will not hold a sauce in a bag. Measure 20 × 8 × 6 cm against the meal rather than against the word large. Caterserve’s B088HFG3S4 is the other high-count pot: 50 trays and 50 paper lids at £11.79, about 140 × 115 mm and 50 mm deep, listed at 500 ml, with 4.6 from 2,037 reviews and a stated tray ceiling of 200°C. Reviewers call the size right for one portion. Thin is a common word, and some packs arrive damaged. The shape is squarer than Zuvo’s long 600 ml pot. A No.2 board will not automatically snap onto either rim. The best disposable foil trays page keeps Zuvo as best value for portions and refuses it for a joint. Neither pot is a roasting tin.

A large tray with snap lids is a different job

Superior’s B08L66NXB5 is ten large trays with snap lids at £14.97, 4.6 from 94 reviews. The bullets say 32 × 26 × 6.2 cm, a family lasagne or a cottage pie, not a 500 ml pot. The complaint that repeats is the lid: one review says the tins were fine and the lids were not. The catalogue dimensions do not match the bullets, so check the box. The listing says oven safe to 200°C and does not say the lids stay on in the oven. Do not confuse this pack with Superior’s open deep tray, B074ZH6DXK. Its bullets say without lids, while its catalogue says Lid. It is not listed here as a lidded product. A 600 ml pot will not take a cottage pie for four. If the centimetres are still unclear, the aluminium foil trays buying guide separates depth from the word large.

Using the lid

Match the lid to the tray you measured. Supply Express notes that a lid for one number will not fit a lookalike. Crimp a board lid or press a snap lid only after the food has cooled. Zuvo’s bullets say the tray can be reheated up to 250°C and can go from freezer to oven. They do not put the cardboard lid in that sentence. Caterserve’s paper lids and Superior’s snap lids are the same: the files do not call the lids oven-safe. Do not microwave these containers. None of the three lidded listings gives a clean microwave-safe claim to repeat. A 600 ml pot is light enough that the usual failure is the lid, not the lift out of the oven.

Recycling the lid

Rinse the aluminium tray if your council wants clean metal. Bacofoil says the rinsed foil can be recycled, and that the combined card-and-foil lid is not yet recycled and goes in general waste. In England, SI 2024/666 names aluminium food trays in the metal stream, and GOV.UK says English collectors must take that metal from 31 March 2026 if the item is empty and not heavily contaminated. A card lid is not that metal stream. A tray with baked-on grease belongs in the general waste. A lid you never use is extra cardboard, and a 500 ml pot will not hold a chicken.

Common questions

Can I cook with the lid on?
Not with the paper, board, or snap lids in these files. The listings describe oven use for the tray and do not rate the lid. Remove the lid, heat the tray, cool the food, then cover it. A printed oven line is for the foil.
Why do lids leak?
A lid that misses the rim cannot hold sauce. On the Zuvo pack, one review says the supplied lids do not fit and food leaks. Other Zuvo reviews still write the dish name on the lid. Check fit on the first pot. That is not a verdict that every lid in every pack fails.
Will any board lid fit any tray?
No. A lid sold for one tray number will not fit a lookalike, which is the warning from takeaway packaging guides. Buy the lid with the base, or buy a lid that names that exact tray. A No.2 board near 450 ml is a similar job to a 500 ml pot, not a promise that it snaps onto that rim.
Can I recycle the lid with the tray?
Recycle a rinsed aluminium tray if it is empty and not heavily soiled, and your council takes metal. Put a combined card-and-foil lid in general waste. Bacofoil says that lid is not yet recycled. The card lid is not the metal stream, even when the base is foil.
Is the large Superior pack the same idea as a 600 ml pot?
No. B08L66NXB5 is a large tray around 32 × 26 × 6.2 cm with snap lids, for a family dish, with only 94 reviews. The 600 ml Zuvo pot is one portion. The open Superior deep tray is a third product and is not sold here as a lidded pack. Its bullets say without lids even where the catalogue says Lid.
