Aluminium profile buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at a printer frame, a run of cabinet lights, or a length of trim, and every amazon.co.uk result answers to the same name. An aluminium profile buying guide is useful only when you choose the family before the brand. A slotted 2020 rail, a channel that hides an LED strip, a plaster-in flange and a mill-finish angle do not share nuts, covers or screws. Prices captured on 19 October 2026 stay on the [aluminium profile comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/aluminium-profile). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. These notes come from the listing lines. We did not cut a bar.

Five families, not one bar

This set splits into five families, and the fixings stop at the boundary. 2020 V-slot is black anodised kit rail, and CNCMANS is the kit that prints a 6.2 mm slot. An LED U-channel is LightingWill with a stated or approximate 12 mm opening, or PULUME with no inner width printed. Plaster-in runs from £30.99 to £34.99. Mill finish is Fabal’s 15 × 15 × 1.5 mm angle at £10.16 and the 20 × 20 × 2 mm channel at £13.20. If the bar has no slot, it will not take a 2020 T-nut, and if it has no diffuser seat, it will not hide a strip. Lighting buyers who already know they need a channel should move to the aluminium profile for an LED strip.

Section, length, and the opening

The second check is the section in millimetres, then the piece length, then the opening you actually use. “20 mm” is not one product. Fabal’s mill-finish channel is 20 × 20 × 2 mm of plain U or C section, and it does not take 2020 T-nuts. A 2020 kit is a slotted rail whose outside is nominally 20 × 20 mm. If the listing never prints a slot width, you cannot know which nut you already own. LED openings here are 12 mm, about 12 mm, 13 mm, strips of 1–15 mm, or strips up to 18 mm. PULUME does not state one. Judge the inner lips, not the outside of the extrusion.

What is actually in the box

No kept listing in this set includes the LED strip. LightingWill’s six-pack lists six channels, six milky covers, 12 end caps and 12 clips. The five-pack has covers, caps and clips, and a review notes there is no joiner. iMetrx kits list brackets, M5 bolts, T-nuts and hex keys, and they do not list in-line couplers. CNCMANS lists four L-brackets, 50 T-nuts and a wrench. Fabal’s angle and channel are the bar alone. inShareplus lists six channels and six covers, and the same bullet also says 10 m while six times 1 m is 6 m. YGS-Tech does not list screws. A missing line is a missing part. Waterproof, remote or Wi-Fi on an empty channel is not a strip in the box. If the bar is already in the house, the saw is on how to cut an aluminium profile.

Finish, alloy, and the cable limit

Black anodised 2020 scratches once the film is off. Mill finish, on both Fabal listings, is the surface you paint, powder-coat or anodise later. Only those two listings print 6063-T6. Hydro’s sheet for EN AW-6063, citing EN 755-2:2016, gives 215 MPa tensile and 170 MPa proof stress for walls up to 10 mm. Use those figures only for a bar that states the grade. Approved Document P makes a new circuit, a consumer-unit change, or work in a bath or shower special location notifiable in a dwelling. Clipping a channel and plugging in a driver is a different job. The two iMetrx lengths share 4.6 from 24 reviews, so that number does not prove each length on its own. When the family, the section and the box are clear, the named fit is on best aluminium profile.

Common questions

Is every aluminium profile on amazon.co.uk the same shape?
No. In this set the same search returns 2020 V-slot kits, LED U-channels, plaster-in flanges, a mill-finish angle and a mill-finish channel. Nuts from a 2020 kit do not fit the Fabal 20 × 20 × 2 mm channel, and a milky diffuser is not in a frame kit. Choose the family before you compare brands or star ratings.
Does 20 mm mean a 2020 slot rail?
Not by itself. Fabal’s £13.20 listing is a plain 20 × 20 × 2 mm channel with no T-slot. A 2020 kit is a slotted rail, and CNCMANS is the one here that prints a slot width, 6.2 mm, on the title. iMetrx does not print a slot width. A 5 mm slot and a 6 mm nut are different parts, which is why the millimetre line matters.
Does the box include the LED strip, the driver, or the nuts?
Read the contents line for that ASIN. No kept listing here includes the LED strip. iMetrx and CNCMANS include brackets and T-nuts. LightingWill’s surface packs include covers, caps and clips. Fabal’s angle and channel are the bar only. inShareplus does not list screws, plugs or end caps.
When do you need a plaster-in flange instead of a surface channel?
You need the flange when the profile is going into plasterboard or a ceiling while the boards are still going up. LightingWill’s double-flange pack is £30.99 with a 13 mm opening. A finished cabinet run is a surface U-channel, such as the £21.55 six-pack, and a flange will not clip onto a shelf the way those mounting clips do.
Is mill finish a finished look, or a bar you still have to paint?
It is a bar you still finish. Both Fabal listings describe mill finish as ready to cut, drill and paint or anodise, not as a decorative surface out of the packet. Black anodised 2020 is the opposite case: it arrives coated, and reviews say that coat scratches once the film is off.
Which listings in this set actually state 6063-T6?
Only the two Fabal metres: the 15 × 15 × 1.5 mm angle at £10.16 and the 20 × 20 × 2 mm channel at £13.20. The 2020 kits and the LED channels do not state that grade. Do not apply EN 755-2 minima to a listing that only says aluminium alloy.
