How to install acoustic panels

Updated: 23 October 2026

The pack is in the hall and you want it on the wall. How to install acoustic panels depends on what is in the box, how heavy the piece is, and whether the tenancy allows a mark. A 10 mm felt board, a vacuum-packed wedge, and an 11 kg slat are three jobs. This page is the fixing. Where a bedroom studio should place them is on [acoustic panels for a home studio](/hub/diy-supplies/acoustic-panel/sub/acoustic-panel-home-studio). Which pack to buy is on the [acoustic panel comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/acoustic-panel). The steps match the listings of 19 October 2026 and 3M Command's UK guidance. We did not fit them in a test house. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Check what is actually in the box

Open the carton before you buy adhesive. AudioSilk does not include strips. The page suggests about four Command strips per board, or spray for a permanent fix. Focusound includes 300 loose pads that United Kingdom reviewers call weak. Sonic, AUSLET and Topnaca are peel-and-stick. MCW's walnut page names Stick it2it PU, which is not in the box. 3M's UK guidance says strips release when you stretch them slowly downwards, and that they are not for textured walls or wallpaper. Press for the time the pack states, on paint that is clean, dry and stuck to the plaster. Fix one tile overnight before you commit the pack. Spray is permanent.

Let compressed foam recover before you judge it

Foam that arrives flat is not yet the product you will stick. Focusound and AUSLET ship compressed. AUSLET reviews say the pack can need a night to relax, and that pieces measure nearer 15–20 mm than the stated inch. Focusound buyers report foam that stays flat. Give the tiles 48 hours, loose, in a warm dry room, before you glue a crushed shape. A tile that is still a pancake after two days will not inflate on the wall. A warm rinse can hurry a stubborn polyurethane wedge, and it can also warp the skin or spoil a peel-and-stick back. If you try it, dry the tile fully before any adhesive. Do not soak PET felt such as AudioSilk, Topnaca or Fluxynara. Judge thickness with a ruler after recovery. The title's inch is the claim. The ruler is what you can check.

Heavy slats need a fixing, not a poster strip

MCW states 11 kg on the natural oak and walnut panels, each 2400 × 600 mm. That is timber and felt, not a poster, and picture strips are the wrong tool. The walnut page points to Stick it2it PU, bought separately, or you screw into studs you have found first. A 2.4 m line of holes in the wrong place is the expensive mistake. Cutting is where felt-backed slats go wrong. A blunt jigsaw snags the felt and kicks. Support the sheet, use a sharp blade, and slice the felt rather than drag it. Transit has often dented the corners already. Inspect the ends on the doorstep. Art3d's smaller modules fail differently: slats leave the staples, and no glue is listed. Lift an 11 kg MCW board with a second person.

Renting, and when to stop

Ask for written permission before you coat a rented wall or drive screws. CPS Homes warns that strips still appear in deposit disputes. 3M's damage-free claim assumes suitable paint and the stretch-to-remove method. It is not a promise your inventory clerk will agree. Full-wall spray is the hardest finish to reverse. A few fillable holes, or a freestanding frame, are kinder to a deposit than a seamless glue line. Stop for a fitter when the wall is damp or unknown masonry, when the run sits above a stair, or when you cannot say where the cables are. Do not cover smoke alarms, heat alarms or heater faces. Hollow plaster under 11 kg fails as a lump of plaster, not as a wonky slat.

Common questions

Can I use them in a rented flat?
You can with written permission and a fixing you can undo. Strips on sound paint are the least invasive option 3M describes, and agents still treat them as a deposit risk. Spray and an 11 kg screwed slat are alterations. A board you own, leant or framed at the wall, keeps the plaster out of the argument. Test one strip in a corner before you commit the pack.
What if the foam is still thin?
Leave AUSLET or Focusound loose in a warm room for up to 48 hours and measure again. AUSLET reviewers describe a night to relax and a thickness nearer 15–20 mm than 1 inch. If Focusound is still flat after two days, it has not become the stated 2 inch wedge. Do not glue it in the hope it will grow, and do not soak a PET board.
Will adhesive damage emulsion?
Spray and PU grabbers, including the Stick it2it named on the MCW walnut page, can take paint with them. Command strips are meant to stretch off suitable paint, and 3M excludes textured walls and wallpaper. Fresh paint can delaminate anyway. Test one strip in a corner, wait a day, and remove it with a downward stretch before you commit the pack.
How do I cut a slat panel without the saw kicking?
Support the length, use a sharp blade, and slice the felt rather than pull it into the teeth. A blunt jigsaw on a 21 mm MCW sheet snags and kicks. Practise on an end that transit has already dented before you cut the visible edge. The felt face also marks if you lever a corner off the floor while you lift.
Is an 11 kg panel a strip job?
No. The natural oak and walnut panels are listed at 11 kg and 2400 mm tall. Use the PU adhesive the walnut page names, or screws into structure you have located, and have a second person on the lift. The light oak grey file states no weight, so do not assume it is lighter. If you cannot find studs, that is a fitter, not a larger pack of strips.
