Trowel buying guide: name the job before the stars

Updated: October 2026

You have typed trowel into amazon.co.uk and the grid mixes a garden scoop, a pointing trowel, a short brick blade, and a plastering trowel. Stars then favour the most-reviewed listing, usually a soil tool, even when you meant joints or a skim. This trowel buying guide is the order for the eleven listings in the [trowel comparison](/hub/digging-tools/trowel): name the job, then metal and joint, then the size on that listing, and only then price and stars inside one family. The Products Compared editorial team read those pages on 15 October 2026, with no lab test and no British Standard for these tools. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. This page crowns nobody.

Name the job before you read the stars

Soil, pointing, bricklaying, and skimming need different blades, and stars from another family do not change the job. A garden trowel scoops beds and pots, a pointing trowel fills joints, a brick trowel spreads mortar, and a plastering trowel is a flat blade for a skim. This folder holds six garden hand trowels, one 150 mm pointing trowel, one 5 inch brick trowel, and three plastering trowels. Elements is 4.7 from 4,417 reviews and is a garden trowel. Gunpla is 5.0 from three and is a plastering trowel. Three reviews are too few to rank a skim blade over a soil blade.

Metal and the joint on a garden trowel

For ordinary soil, stainless is the easier metal. The Royal Horticultural Society says it is less likely to rust, though quality varies, and you should brush, dry, and oil the blade. Aluminium is light for that light soil, but a poor lever in heavy ground. Powder-coated carbon can take heavier soil if you dry it, and damp carbon can mark pale gypsum on a skim. The joint matters more than the metal name. Cheap garden trowels here are a spike in wood that can twist out when you lever. Showvigor's wooden handle, at £5.98, has reviews in which the handle comes off. The rubber-grip Showvigor, at £6.98, does not prove a full tang. If the soil needs a lever, judge the joint before the price, and keep the motion on how to use a trowel.

The size on the listing

Use the figure on the listing. Showvigor's rubber-grip trowel is 17.8 cm and 130 g in one place and 30.5 cm in a bullet. The wooden model is 28.5 cm and 170 g, while a unit field reads 28.3495 grams. Elements is 32 × 8 × 9 cm, a kneel-down scoop rather than a stand-up spade. Faithfull is 150 mm, near the 6 inch (about 152 mm) joint size UK shops sell, and a Wickes listing of that size is not an ASIN here. Onesto is 5 inches, short of the 10 inches BuildWiz treats as a start for laying bricks, and this folder has no full-size brick trowel. Plastering blades run from about 280 mm to 356 mm. Bulb depth marks sit on trowel for planting bulbs.

Price inside one family

Compare pounds only with tools that share the job. Garden hand trowels here sit under about £8: D.A.Y. Republic £4.35, unbranded stainless £4.99, Showvigor wood £5.98, Select £6.05, Showvigor rubber £6.98, and Elements £7.70. Pointing, brick, and plastering run from Faithfull at £3.90 and Onesto at £7.99 through Draper at £10.02 to Gunpla at £27.45 and OX at £28.79. A £4 pointing trowel is not a bargain garden trowel. Burgon & Ball at £16.99 and Kent & Stowe at £10.99 are not these ASINs. Who should leave each name is on best trowel.

What the listing may get wrong

If two length fields clash, the title is not a size. Depth marks are a claim we did not measure. A tang that twists on first use is a quality fault under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a digging mistake.

Common questions

Why do cheap garden trowel handles twist out?
Cheap garden trowels here are a spike in wood, and that spike can twist out when you lever. Showvigor's wooden-handle reviews include a handle that comes off, at £5.98. One Onesto review says the handle broke. A rubber grip does not prove a full tang. Treat a first-use failure as a fault in the goods.
Is a 5 inch or 150 mm blade big enough to lay bricks?
Neither length is a full bricklaying trowel. The 150 mm Faithfull is for joints, near the usual UK shop size of about 6 inches, or 152 mm. The 5 inch blade is the Onesto. BuildWiz treats about 10 inches as a practical start for laying bricks, and a reviewer says the Faithfull is not for that job.
What size plastering trowel is in this set, and why does carbon rust matter on gypsum?
The Draper is 280 mm lacquered carbon, the Gunpla is titled 280 by 130 mm stainless, and the OX is 127 by 356 mm stainless with pre-worn edges. Stainless is usual for a skim because damp carbon can mark pale gypsum. Lacquer on the Draper, at £10.02, is not a promise if the blade stays wet. A bent corner is damage, and OX reviews treat balance as personal.
Can I trust depth marks and foldable fields on the listing?
Depth marks were not measured here, so a printed scale is only a claim. Select says foldable yes on a fixed blade. Elements' attributes on 15 October 2026 say foldable yes too, and list both carbon steel and alloy steel. The 10-year guarantee on the 4058NB was not tested.
What can I do if the tang fails on first use?
A tang that twists on first use is a quality fault under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Sections 19 to 24 cover repair, replacement, or a refund, depending on timing. A fault within six months is presumed present at delivery unless the trader proves otherwise. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 require a safe product in normal use.
