Square mouth shovel

Updated: October 2026

You are shifting sand, gravel, hardcore, spoil or cement, or you are trying to level a bed for slabs. A square mouth shovel is the flat edge with raised sides that gets under a loose pile and holds it until you tip. It is the wrong edge if you expected it to break clay. This page stays on that flat edge. The taper and the serrated blade appear only as the tools to buy instead. Every listing, square or not, is in the [shovel comparison](/hub/digging-tools/shovel). Peter F. compared the amazon.co.uk listings in October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the flat edge is for

Wonkee Donkee describes a square mouth for loose material, levelling and backfill, and as less suitable for digging. The turned-up edges hold the load. Pavingexpert calls the wide mouth the shifter and a poor tool in clay. On a drive, slide the edge under the gravel, lift a bite you can turn with your feet, and tip into the barrow. The same edge levels a patio bed after a spade has cut the turf. A pointed blade spills a loose pile. If you are unsure you want a shovel at all, the shovel vs spade page draws that line. A 70 cm square will scrape a bag. It will not let you work a driveway upright.

Four lengths, one mouth

The Draper 15073 mini is 70 cm and 700 g, at £11.61. A reviewer about 6 ft tall said the handle reached just below the knee. The Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE is 710 mm, blade 210 x 160 mm, at £12.35, for drains and bag mouths. The Draper 31391 is 940 mm, blade 240 x 310 mm, at £16.99. A reviewer around 5 ft 2 in found that comfortable. The Roughneck ROU68146 is 1,070 mm, with foot treads, at £22.59. Someone over about 5 ft 10 in found it short. The JCB sits at 99 cm, blade 250 x 320 mm, at £24.99. These are not one No. 2 size. Length before brand is the shovel buying guide.

Pressed wood, fibreglass, forged socket

The Draper 31391 fixes a pressed blade to hardwood. Reviewers report rivets that move and shafts that snapped while moving sand. Other buyers on the same 627 ratings moved stone without a break. The Roughneck industrial square uses heat-treated pressed steel and a fibreglass D-grip, with foot treads the Draper and the JCB do not state. The first 40 UK reviews do not repeat a break. The printed weight of 220 g is not credible for a 1,070 mm shovel. The JCB is a forged open socket. One of eight written reviews says it broke while digging a hole, and the load-test line does not name BS 3388. At £24.99 it is the dearest square here. Who each suits is on the best builders shovel page.

When a square mouth is the wrong shovel

Leave the square when the ground is still clay or full of roots. The edge skates. A taper such as the Spear & Jackson 2000WORK, or the 1,460 mm serrated Roughneck, is the exit. A spade is the exit when you need a straight cut. Also leave it where a cable may be. HSE HSG47 calls for horizontal digging and insulated tools. None of these squares is described as insulated.

Common questions

What is a square mouth shovel for?
It is for material that is already loose: sand, gravel, hardcore, spoil and cement, and for levelling or backfilling a bed. The flat edge slides under the pile on a hard surface, and the raised sides keep the load on the blade. In this set that is the Draper 31391, the Roughneck ROU68146, the JCB yard shovel, and the two short squares if the space is tight. It is not the tool that opens clay.
Will a square mouth dig clay?
Poorly. The flat edge spreads your weight and bounces on compacted ground, which is why paving and trade guides send clay to a spade or a pointed or taper blade. You can scrape the loose top. You should not expect the Draper, the Roughneck square or the JCB to cut a clay face because the shaft is longer. Buy a taper or a spade for that part of the job.
What blade size is a No. 2?
These squares are not one No. 2 size. The Draper 31391 blade is 240 x 310 mm. The JCB is 250 x 320 mm. The MICROSQUARE is 210 x 160 mm. The industrial Roughneck does not print a blade size you can trust alongside its 220 g weight error. No. 2 on the Spear & Jackson 2000WORK is the name of that taper-mouth shovel, and it is not a square. Compare the millimetres the listing actually gives.
Full length or micro for bulk bags?
Use a full standing square, 940 mm or 1,070 mm, when you are emptying bags into a barrow and walking the pile. Use the 70 cm Draper or the 710 mm MICROSQUARE when the bag mouth, a ditch or a kneel is the constraint. One adult did move a large amount of gravel with the 710 mm shovel. A reviewer at about 6 ft sent the 70 cm tool back. Read the length before you save a few pounds.
Wood shaft or fibreglass for a driveway?
Fibreglass on the Roughneck ROU68146 is the driveway square with foot treads and 613 ratings at 4.7, at £22.59. The hardwood Draper 31391 is £16.99 and has snapped-shaft reviews, alongside buyers who shifted tonnes. For a one-off load, the Draper is the cheaper square if you accept that joint. For repeated gravel, the fibreglass listing has the cleaner defect record in the reviews we read.
Why did a square shovel snap?
On the Draper 31391 the reports are a wooden shaft that snapped while moving sand or clearing garden waste, and rivets that move where the head meets the shaft. Levering makes that worse. The mini has a separate report of a blade that snapped after two days around roots. The Roughneck square's first 40 UK reviews do not repeat a break. One JCB review says that forged shovel broke while digging a hole. One snap is not a rate.
