How to apply threadlocker on a metal bolt

Updated: October 2026

The bolt is in your hand and the joint has to go back together before you load it. How to apply threadlocker is four moves: clean the metal, use a small amount, tighten, and wait out the cure on the bottle you bought. These listings do not share one clock. Henkel quotes a 10-minute fixture for Loctite 270 that is not on the amazon.co.uk dump. Strength is [high strength versus medium threadlocker](/hub/cutting-tools/threadlocker-high-strength/sub/threadlocker-high-strength-vs-medium). Fill is the [buying guide](/hub/cutting-tools/threadlocker-high-strength/sub/threadlocker-high-strength-buying-guide). A stuck or leaked joint is [how to remove threadlocker](/hub/cutting-tools/threadlocker-high-strength/sub/threadlocker-high-strength-removal). The listings sit on the [high-strength threadlocker comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/threadlocker-high-strength). There was no lab test.

Clean metal, then a small dose

This liquid is anaerobic. It cures when it is trapped out of the air between close-fitting metal threads. Oil, grease and cutting fluid block that. One UK reviewer of Loctite 270 said to make sure the threads are oil-free. Wipe the bolt and the female thread until the metal looks dry, and let any solvent flash off before you dose. Loctite’s UK consumer guide says the product is for metal nuts and bolts and will not work on plastic. Put a small bead on the threads that will engage, not a flood down the shank and not a puddle in a blind hole. These listings do not state a drop count, so this page will not invent one. Too much liquid squeezes out and does not strengthen the threads that are engaged. A materials line that says plastic is not an instruction to coat a plastic thread. If the part is not metal, stop.

Tighten, then wait out the cure that your bottle prints

Assemble and tighten to the torque the joint requires, while the liquid is still wet. sitarcmin and GOLDEROC say tighten within 3 minutes. Do not copy that limit onto Loctite 270 or either Flintronic bottle, which do not print it. Once the nut is home, leave it. Moving the fastener during the cure shears the film. Henkel’s UK page for Loctite 270 quotes a 10-minute fixture. Full cure is not on that amazon.co.uk listing. Loctite’s UK consumer page gives 24 hours before you load a joint, unless the bottle prints its own full-cure line. Abnaok and Nanoxa print 20 minutes, then 24 hours. sitarcmin and GOLDEROC print 15–20 minutes, then 24 hours. Realth prints 24 hours and no initial minutes. Both Flintronic listings give no minutes. If your bottle has no number, do not borrow 10 minutes from Henkel. Stainless, aluminium and plated steel can cure slowly. Activators SF 7649 or SF 7240 are a 270 note if the bead stays wet or the workshop is below 5 °C.

Where a film will not hold the part

A thread film locks a fastener in a thread. It does not stop a shaft that rocks in a bearing. One UK review of a strong bottle on e-bike hub-motor nuts said the film had little effect because motor torque rocks the axle. Flooding the thread does not fix a loose fit. If the cover has to come off with a spanner next month, wiping the outside does not turn the film into a medium lock. Do not load the joint early to see if it holds.

Stop if the fastener is on brakes, steering or fuel

Brakes, steering, suspension and fuel are a mechanic’s job if you are not already competent to assemble them. The same line covers a flame beside a fuel line or a tank. NSF P1 123006 is Loctite 270 only. It is not a pass for the other seven bottles. A rounded head is a reason to stop before the liquid goes on. If the joint is already locked and will not undo, do not add a second dose. Clean, dose, tighten and wait belong only to a joint you are assembling now.

Common questions

Do I put threadlocker on the bolt, the nut, or both?
Put a small amount on the metal threads that will engage, usually the bolt, so the liquid is carried into the nut as you tighten. Coating both sides until they drip does not add a second lock. These listings do not give a drop count. Aim for a wet thread along the engagement and a dry shank.
What happens if the threads are oily?
The cure is meant to happen on clean metal, out of the air. Oil leaves a film the liquid does not bond through. Wipe both the male and female threads and let them dry. Cleaning only the tip of a bolt that came out of an oily housing is not enough. A dirty joint may stay soft.
How long until I can load the joint?
Use the full-cure line on the bottle you bought. Where that line exists in this set it says 24 hours. The 10-minute figure is a fixture time on Henkel’s page for Loctite 270, not a full cure. Listings that say 15–20 minutes or 20 minutes are describing an initial cure. Do not run the joint in the first hour because the nut felt tight.
Why do some listings say 15–20 minutes and Henkel says 10 minutes?
They are different products and, for 270, a different kind of time. Henkel’s 10 minutes is a fixture for Loctite 270 on the manufacturer page. sitarcmin and GOLDEROC print 15–20 minutes. Abnaok and Nanoxa print 20 minutes, then 24 hours. None of those numbers was timed here. Follow the bottle in your hand, and still wait 24 hours before a loaded joint unless that bottle prints a shorter full cure.
Will it lock a bolt that rocks in a bearing?
No. One UK review described a strong threadlocker on e-bike hub-motor nuts that did little, because the axle rocks under motor torque. The liquid can lock a nut on a thread. It cannot stop a shaft moving in a bearing. Another dose will not fix the fit. Use a retaining method meant for a cylindrical part, or have the hub checked.
