Water separator vs air dryer

Updated: October 2026

Someone has told you the bowl will dry the air, or a listing has put mini air dryer on a small trap. A water separator vs air dryer choice is simpler than those titles. Choose a separator when you need liquid out at that fitting. Choose a dryer when you need a stated pressure dew point. None of these six is a dryer. The [water separator comparison](/hub/compressors/water-separator) still lists them as bowls and filter regulators. A qualifying purchase from our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Figures are from 15 October 2026. We have not measured a dew point.

A bowl takes liquid, a dryer takes vapour

Atlas Copco UK puts the split in one place. A moisture trap removes liquid water, not water vapour. When that air cools in a hose or a cold shed, the vapour becomes the droplets you then blame on the bowl. TOPRING says the same limit: a separator does not lower the dew point. Atlas Copco’s 80–90 percent figure is for a correctly sized trap, not a measurement on these six listings. If the hose still wets the air after a healthy bowl, the next machine has to change the dew point. A second identical trap still leaves vapour in the pipe.

What a refrigerated dryer adds

A refrigerated dryer cools the compressed air so vapour condenses, then separates that liquid and lets the air warm again. Air Equipment describes about 3°C as the pressure dew point for ordinary indoor industrial pipework. Atlas Copco ties about +3°C to ISO 8573-1 Class 4 for that dryer range only. Class 4 is not a class for any separator in this set. If the airline runs colder than that dew point, water can appear again. A refrigerated dryer is the usual step for indoor pipe that stays above freezing, and a poor promise for a hose in an unheated shed. You still drain condensate. The dryer does not empty the receiver or destroy oil in the liquid.

When the specification moves to a desiccant dryer

A desiccant, or adsorption, dryer is the step when the specification needs a much lower pressure dew point. Atlas Copco cites a typical −40°C for adsorption drying. Air Equipment describes about −20°C to −40°C for specialist air, sometimes including high-grade spraying. Those figures are supplier descriptions of dryer types. They are not readings from a bowl, and this page does not recommend a dryer model or a price. Desiccant drying costs more to run indoors, and many small units use air for regeneration. Breathing air and a workplace booth sit outside these traps. If you only need liquid out of a gun hose indoors, you are still on the bowl side of this page.

What that means for the six separators

None of the six prints a pressure dew point or an ISO 8573-1 class. CYTGOUPER prints 750 L/min and 5 μm. nutmanel prints 5 μm and 1.0 MPa at about £12.34. Hakeeta is the 1/2 inch body at about £29.11. Those are bowl facts from 15 October 2026, not dryer specifications. If the job is liquid in a hobby airline, a separator is what these listings are. If you need a pressure dew point, you need a dryer they are not. Which bowl to buy stays on the water separator buying guide and the best water separator page.

When the bowl, when the dryer

Choose a separator when the job is liquid at the fitting, and you can live with vapour that condenses later in a cool hose. Choose a refrigerated dryer when indoor pipe needs a stated dew point around 3°C, and a desiccant dryer when the specification is far below freezing. None of these six listings is either dryer.

Common questions

Does a water separator dry the air?
No. It removes liquid water where it is fitted. Water vapour stays in the air and can condense again when the pipe cools. Atlas Copco UK states that split for moisture traps. The 80–90 percent band on that page is for a correctly sized trap, not a test of these six. A mini air dryer title on a small bowl does not change the mechanism.
What is the difference between a moisture trap and a refrigerated dryer?
A moisture trap knocks out droplets that have already formed. A refrigerated dryer cools the air so vapour condenses, commonly to about +3°C on the UK dryer sources cited here. Air Equipment describes about 3°C as enough for most indoor industrial pipework. If the pipe is colder than that, water can return. The figure is a dryer description, not a rating of these bowls.
When would I need a desiccant dryer instead?
When the specification needs a lower dew point than a refrigerated dryer holds. Atlas Copco cites a typical −40°C for adsorption drying, and Air Equipment describes about −20°C to −40°C for specialist air. Those are supplier descriptions, not a model to buy from this page. A gun that only spits liquid is still a separator problem.
Do any of these six listings state a dew point?
No. None prints a pressure dew point or an ISO 8573-1 class. A 5 μm mark on CYTGOUPER or nutmanel is filtration, not a dew point. Prices from about £8.99 to about £29.11 on 15 October 2026 are bowl prices. They are not a dryer market and not a Class 4 or Class 6 claim.
Can I put a separator before a dryer?
Yes, when its job is to stop liquid slugging the dryer. Walker and BCAS describe that order: bulk liquid first, then vapour removal in the dryer. It is not always required if nothing condenses between the receiver and the filters. You still drain the bowl and the receiver. The separator does not supply the dew point.
Is a mini air dryer title on a small trap accurate?
No. Retail titles often collapse trap, separator, and dryer into one product. A small in-line bowl still only catches liquid. It does not print the +3°C or −40°C dew points that belong to refrigerated and desiccant dryers. If the specification has no pressure dew point, the product is not the dryer this page describes.
