Water trap for spray painting

Updated: October 2026

The gun spat on the last pass, and the panel shows marks you did not put in the paint. A water trap for spray painting can catch liquid that has already formed in the airline. It does not, by itself, give you the finer stage a spray shop describes, and a hose can condense water again after the bowl. This page stays with that defect. It does not rank the six amazon.co.uk separators. The [water separator comparison](/hub/compressors/water-separator) holds the prices. A qualifying purchase from our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Listings were compared with public UK spray sources on 15 October 2026. We have not sprayed a panel.

What water in the airline does to paint

Mark Compressors UK describes fish eyes, cratering, and poor adhesion as the sort of trouble moisture and oil leave in paint. A fish eye is not proof of water alone. Silicone and grease mark paint too. A separator takes liquid that has already formed, usually oil and water together. It does not take water vapour out of the air. A title that calls a mini trap a dryer overclaims what the bowl does.

Why a trap on the hot outlet still leaves a wet hose

Liquid falls out as the air cools. A trap on the hot outlet sees air that has not given up much water yet. The hose is where the temperature drops, and a gun can still spit after an empty bowl at the compressor. A trap catches liquid that has already condensed. It does not stop later condensation. Something upstream knocks out bulk liquid. Something close to the gun catches what the hose made later. Spray Guns Direct suggests about 10 metres of airline before a wall filter. Tiardey’s title says NPT and a bullet says G1/4, so do not assume it screws onto a BSP gun. Orientation is on the how to fit a water separator page.

5 microns on the listing, 0.5 microns at the spray stage

Two listings print 5 μm: the CYTGOUPER AF2000-02 and the nutmanel 003. The other four print no micron figure. None prints 0.5 micron, and none prints 0.01 micron. Spray Guns Direct calls a single stage to 0.5 microns clean enough to spray in that retailer’s range, and 0.01 micron a further stage, including air for a fed mask. Those numbers belong to that shop. They are not test results for these ASINs. A 5 μm mark can sit in front of a gun and still leave the spray stage missing. Hakeeta prints no micron figure. The best water separator page assigns a listing by job. It does not close the 0.5 micron gap.

When this set is the wrong tool for the finish

These bowls are the wrong tool when the finish assumes a wall filter, a stated dew point, or breathing air. A hobby spit of water is the job a separator can touch. A clearcoat shot only on dried, filtered air is past what any of these six documents. Stop and get a competent person when the air feeds a mask, when you are in a workplace booth, or when oily condensate has to follow a site rule. None of these listings is a breathing-air filter, and none states an ISO 8573-1 class. If the only change today is where the bowl sits, put protection near the gun as well as at the compressor.

Catch the liquid, then stop claiming the finish

If the gun is spitting liquid that has already formed, a bowl can catch it at the point where it sits, and a second catch near the gun covers what the hose made later. If the job needs 0.5 microns, a dew point, or air for a mask, none of these six listings documents that stage. A 5 μm mark is not that missing stage.

Common questions

Will a water separator stop fish eyes?
It can only affect marks that come from liquid already in the airline, and it only catches liquid that has formed. Mark Compressors links fish eyes and cratering to moisture and contamination. Silicone marks paint as well. A separator does not remove vapour or destroy oil in the condensate. One bowl is not a clean clearcoat.
Where should the trap sit for spraying, at the compressor or at the gun?
They catch different water. A trap on hot air at the compressor sees less liquid, and a long hose can condense more on the way. Spray Guns Direct talks about a run of about 10 metres before a wall filter. A small trap at the gun is a second catch, not a substitute for that cooling. Fit it upright only after the thread matches.
Is a 5 micron filter fine enough to spray?
CYTGOUPER and nutmanel print 5 μm. Spray Guns Direct describes 0.5 microns as the stage it calls clean enough to spray, in that shop’s range. The other four listings print no micron number. A 5 μm mark is not a spray system, and it is not a measurement we made on these bowls.
Why is there still water in the gun if I fitted a trap?
The usual reason is that the water formed after the trap. Warm air cools in the hose and drops liquid near the gun. A full bowl also stops separating, so a trap you never drain sends water on again. Check that the bowl is downhill and not full. A trap does not remove vapour.
Does a long rubber hose make more water?
It can. The hose is a cooling run. The longer and cooler it is, the more vapour can turn into liquid after an upstream bowl. A trap at the hot outlet and a dry tank can still leave a wet gun. Catch liquid again near the gun. The hose is not a dryer.
Do I need a dryer as well as a bowl?
You need a dryer when the job needs a pressure dew point, which none of these separators prints. A bowl remains the liquid step in front of that, so the dryer is not flooded. Breathing air and a workplace booth are outside these listings. The versus page sets out drying without turning these six into a dryer.
