Vertical vs horizontal air compressor

Updated: October 2026

The garage floor is a strip beside the bench, the shelf sits near head height, and every machine on the main comparison stands upright. Vertical vs horizontal air compressor, for this set, is floor, height, and how you move the receiver. It is not a second pump. The [vertical air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/vertical-air-compressor) lists eight upright amazon.co.uk cards, captured on 15 October 2026. There is no horizontal tank in the folder, so this page cannot price one. The Products Compared editorial team did not measure a floor patch. Same air job, different shape

Machine Mart’s vertical guide says standing the receiver on end does not change PSI, CFM, or motor type. ABAC’s bullet says a vertical design is for less footprint. The air the tool receives is still the airflow label, which is the job of the vertical air compressor buying guide. A smaller patch of floor can be a taller machine. The shortest card here is 64 cm. If the shelf is the tight dimension, the upright shape is the problem. Standing a 97 dB tank on end does not make it a 57 dB tank.

What these upright listings take up

The SIP V215/25 is 32 × 32 × 64 cm and 14.2 kg, with wheels not stated. The Einhell TE-AC 24 Silent is 35.8 × 36.2 × 70.6 cm and 22.2 kg, again with no wheels stated. The Einhell 50 litre is 36 × 34.5 × 85 cm, with a holding bar and large wheels. The ABAC is narrow and tall: 31.5 × 34 × 101 cm. A shelf at a metre clears the 85 cm Einhell and does not clear the ABAC. SIP-05483 needs the axis order said aloud. The bullet is 840 × 390 × 400 mm, height then width then depth. The table is 40 × 39 × 84 cm. SIP-05484 clashes with a low shelf: 50 × 41 × 115 cm and 53.5 kg net. The Craftsman is 74.9 cm, with rubber wheels, and the voltage cell says 120 V. The footprint does not make it a UK socket machine. Do not paste a Sealey SAC100V footprint onto these ASINs.

Moving an upright tank

Weights run from 14.2 kg on the SIP V215/25 to 53.5 kg net on the 100 litre SIP. You can lift 14.2 kg. Do not plan to lift 53.5 kg down a step. Cards that state wheels or a holding bar are the Einhell 50 litre, both SIP Airmate models, and the Craftsman. The ABAC table does not list wheels. A review is not a specification line. UK reviews of the Einhell silent model say there are no wheels and that 22.2 kg is heavy to carry. Rubber feet limit vibration. They are not a wheel on gravel. Do not lay an upright receiver on its side to store it. These cards do not invite that.

When a horizontal tank is the other answer

Choose upright when the floor is the tight dimension and the stated height clears the shelf. The ABAC, at 31.5 × 34 cm of floor and 101 cm of height, is that case if the shelf is higher than 101 cm. Choose a horizontal tank when the shelf or the space under the bench is tight, or when you want the weight low. Machine Mart’s line is the same: vertical if it stays put and floor is scarce, horizontal for a low profile. This comparison has no horizontal ASIN to price. The best vertical air compressor page names the upright pick in this set, a 24 litre Einhell at 70.6 cm, not a horizontal twin. Shape does not change the Craftsman’s 120 V cell.

Common questions

Does a vertical tank give more air than a horizontal one?
No. Retailers treat the two as the same pump turned on end. Machine Mart says orientation does not change PSI, CFM, or motor type. A 50 litre upright and a 50 litre horizontal store the same stated volume. What the tool receives is the airflow label, not the direction of the tank.
How much floor do these upright listings state?
Footprints run from about 32 × 32 cm on the SIP V215/25 and 31.5 × 34 cm on the ABAC, up to 50 × 41 cm on the 100 litre SIP. Heights run from 64 cm to 115 cm. Use the card’s own centimetres. Do not apply another brand’s 100 litre footprint to the SIP.
Which machines clash with a shelf?
Anything taller than the gap. The ABAC is 101 cm and the 100 litre SIP is 115 cm in the table. The Einhell 50 litre is 85 cm, the Stanley 87 cm, and the Einhell silent model 70.6 cm. A shelf at a metre clears the shorter tanks and not the ABAC or the 100 litre SIP.
Is the 100 litre SIP harder to move because it is upright?
It is harder because the table says 53.5 kg net and 115 cm, even with solid wheels stated. Height is awkward on a step. The weight is the larger problem. The 14.2 kg SIP V215/25 is easier to lift, and it does not state wheels.
Are the wheels stated, or only hoped for?
Stated on the Einhell 50 litre, both SIP Airmate cards, and the Craftsman. Not stated on the Einhell silent model, the SIP V215/25, the ABAC table, or the Stanley table. Reviews that praise wheels are not a specification line you can treat as included.
Will standing it upright make it quieter?
No. The decibel figure is a separate claim. The shortest tank, the SIP V215/25 at 64 cm, is also a 97 dB card. The quietest stated figure, 57 dB LpA, is on a 70.6 cm Einhell, not because it stands upright.
Can I lay one of these tanks on its side?
Do not. These are upright receivers, and tipping one onto its side is not a storage method these cards describe. If the space you have is under a bench, look for a horizontal tank. This folder does not list that machine.
