Vertical air compressor buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are in a UK garage with a brad nailer, a soft tyre, and a shelf in the way. A vertical air compressor buying guide for this set starts with the job, then the tank, the airflow label, the stated noise, and the plug or voltage line. The eight amazon.co.uk listings on the [vertical air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/vertical-air-compressor) were captured on 15 October 2026 by the Products Compared editorial team. This page is the criteria, not a named winner and not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the job, then the tank

Start with the tool that uses the most air. The Einhell TE-AC 24 Silent at about £169.93 and the SIP V215/25 at about £159.00 are both 24 litres at a stated 8 bar, which suits tyres, blow-off, stapling, and light nailing. A hungry tool empties that store. On the ABAC, one review says a pneumatic sander empties the tank in about a minute, and Stanley reviews say the same of a sander even with 50 litres. The 50 litre group is the ABAC, the Einhell TC-AC 240/50/10 OF, SIP-05483, and the Stanley DST 150/8/50V. Extra litres lengthen the pause between motor starts. They do not feed a sander by themselves. SIP-05484 is the tall reserve: 53.5 kg and 115 cm. The Craftsman prints 12 gallons and 120 V.

Read pressure, then the airflow label

Most titles quote 8 bar. The ABAC and the Einhell 50 litre quote 10 bar. The regulator sets hose pressure. The tank gauge is stored pressure. Mixing the two makes a tool look underpowered when the outlet is simply turned down. Free air delivery is the air the compressor delivers. Displacement is the volume the piston sweeps, and the British Compressed Air Society treats them as different figures. SIP-05483 states 4.7 CFM free air delivery and 9.6 CFM displacement, while the specification line shows only 9.6 CFM. SIP-05484 states 9 CFM free air delivery and 13.6 CFM displacement. The Einhell silent capture has no airflow line. A card that never prints free air delivery cannot answer a tool that needs it.

Check the noise claim, the plug, and the voltage

Stated noise runs from 57 dB LpA on the Einhell silent model to 97 dB on the ABAC and the SIP V215/25. This page did not measure them. Bands sit on the quiet vertical air compressor page. Employer action values of 80 and 85 dB(A) do not turn a home hobbyist into an employer. UK mains are 230 V, with a BS 1363 plug. SIP-05483 and SIP-05484 each state a 1.3 m cable with a 13 A plug. The ABAC includes a Type G adaptor, not a moulded plug. The Einhell silent model says 220 V in the table and 240 V in the title, and a UK review describes an EU-spec lead. Stanley’s voltage cell says 50 V while a bullet says UK Plug. The Craftsman states 120 V. An adaptor does not turn 120 V into 230 V. The named pick is on the best vertical air compressor page.

Know the 250 bar-litre line

The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 drop the written-scheme rules for a non-steam vessel under 250 bar litres. On these cards, 24 litres at 8 bar is 192. A 50 litre tank at 8 bar is 400. A home garage is not a workplace, and the machine is not illegal because it crosses that line. If you employ people and the receiver is at or above it, call a competent person. Oil-free, where the listing says it, means no pump oil, not dry air. The Stanley table does not say oil-free. First-start steps are on the how to use a vertical air compressor page.

Common questions

What tank size do I need for tyres and a brad nailer?
A 24 litre receiver is the size these cards offer for tyres, blow-off, stapling, and light nailing. The Einhell silent model and the SIP V215/25 are both 24 litres at a stated 8 bar. Step up to 50 litres when a sander empties the smaller tank in about a minute, as one ABAC review describes. The extra litres are stored air, not a higher free-air figure.
Does a bigger tank give a spray gun more airflow?
No. The tank stores air and the motor refills it. A spray gun or a sander needs free air delivery that keeps up with the tool. Sealey’s catalogue example is an orbital sander at 6 CFM of free air delivery. A 100 litre SIP is still read on its 9 CFM free-air line, not on 13.6 CFM of displacement.
What is free air delivery, as against displacement?
Free air delivery is the air the compressor delivers. Displacement is the volume the piston sweeps, and it is the larger number. SIP-05483 prints 4.7 CFM free air delivery beside 9.6 CFM displacement. If the card does not say which figure you are looking at, do not treat it as free air delivery.
Is a Type G adaptor the same as a moulded UK plug?
No. The ABAC includes a Type G adaptor. SIP-05483 and SIP-05484 state a 1.3 m cable with a 13 A plug. An adaptor is a separate piece, and it does not change a 120 V Craftsman into a 230 V machine. Check the lead that arrives against the included-components line.
What does the Stanley 50 V line mean?
The voltage cell says 50 volts, and a bullet says UK Plug. Those lines disagree. Do not wire the compressor for 50 V, and do not assume the bullet has corrected the cell until you see the lead. The specification table also does not say the pump is oil-free.
When does a compressor cross 250 bar litres?
On the listing figures, 24 litres at 8 bar is 192, so it stays under 250. Every 50 litre and 100 litre card here is over that line, at 400, 500, or 800 bar litres. The threshold is about written schemes at work. A home garage is not made illegal by the sum.
