Quiet 50 litre air compressor: how to read the listing

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are comparing a quiet 50 litre air compressor on amazon.co.uk, and the four machines in our [Silent air compressor 50L comparison](/hub/compressors/silent-air-compressor-50l) look alike: about 50 litres, 8 bar, and a decibel number in the high 50s or low 60s. They are not alike. One airflow figure is free air delivery and another is what the piston sucks in. One plug is a UK 13 A fitting and another is European. One voltage row says 50 volts. This page is how to read those columns before you buy. We did not run a sound meter. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the decibel line is actually measuring

A quiet 50 litre air compressor is sold on one decibel figure, and that figure only helps if you know the distance and the kind of measurement. Sound pressure near the machine and sound power leaving it are different numbers. The usual workstation sits about 1 metre from a reference box. A bare 59 dB or 62 dB does not say 1 metre, 7 metres, sound power, or uncertainty. If the listing will not say what was measured, the smaller integer is the weaker claim.

Free air delivery, not the bigger CFM

Free air delivery is the volume the compressor can put out at a stated pressure. Displacement, aspirated flow, and a CFM line with no label are either how much the piston draws in or a figure the listing refuses to name. The vertical SIP Airmate 05483 is the worked example: 9.6 CFM displacement and 4.7 CFM free air delivery at 8 bar. The horizontal SIP prints 9.6 CFM and does not say free air delivery. Stanley prints 150 litres per minute with no label. The ABAC prints 130 litres per minute and calls it aspirated, which means intake.

Plug, amps, and the 50 volt row

Great Britain's mains are 230 volts, and the plug you want in the box is BS 1363. A European plug is a buying problem, not a holiday adapter on a 1.5 kW motor. The vertical SIP is the clear row: a 1.3 metre lead with a 230 V 13 A plug and a 1.5 kW motor. The ABAC Ease-AIR 50 EU model name says EU, and a United Kingdom review says the item arrived with a European plug. Voltage and current are 230 V, 3.5 A and 0.75 kW. A different ABAC listing is a different ASIN. Stanley's bullets say UK plug while the voltage attribute says 50 volts. The horizontal SIP states 230 V and 13 A and does not name a plug at all.

What a 50 litre tank is for

All four receivers are 50 litres at 8 bar. That store suits short bursts: a brad nailer, a stapler, a blow gun, an airbrush used with pauses. The vertical SIP's pump is about 2,800 rpm. None of these listings states a duty cycle. Ask the listing for a noise figure that names a distance, a free-air figure at a stated pressure, and a BS 1363 plug. In this set only the vertical SIP states the second and the third together. Read that as a conditional choice on the best silent air compressor 50L page. Whether oil-free is the right pump is on the oil-free or oil page.

Common questions

Is 59 dB the same as 60 dB at 7 metres?
No. Fifty-nine decibels on the Stanley and ABAC listings does not name a distance, a sound-power figure, or an uncertainty. Hyundai's HY27550X page states 60 dB at 7 metres, which is a long way from the tank. Scheppach's HC51Si page pairs about 60 dB(A) with a guaranteed sound power of 87 dB. A smaller integer without a distance is the weaker claim.
Should I buy on 9.6 CFM or on 4.7 CFM?
Use 4.7 CFM when the listing calls it free air delivery at a stated pressure. On the vertical SIP, 9.6 CFM is displacement and 4.7 CFM is the free-air figure at 8 bar. The horizontal SIP prints 9.6 CFM without that label, so it is not the same number. FNA's guide that free air is often about 60 percent of displacement is not a measurement of either listing.
Does a 50 litre tank mean it can run a spray gun?
A 50 litre tank at 8 bar stores air for intermittent tools such as a nailer or a blow gun. It does not, by itself, mean a spray gun can stay open. None of these four listings states a duty cycle, and only the vertical SIP states free air delivery, at 4.7 CFM. Match that figure to the gun's demand at a similar pressure, and expect pauses if the gun wants more.
What plug do I need in the UK?
You need a BS 1363 plug on 230 volt mains. The vertical SIP listing includes a 1.3 metre lead with a 230 V 13 A plug. A United Kingdom review of the ABAC Ease-AIR 50 EU says that item arrived with a European plug. The horizontal SIP states 230 V and 13 A and does not name the plug. Do not run a workshop compressor through a holiday adapter.
Why does one listing say 50 volts?
The Stanley DST 150/8/50V attribute row says 50 volts, while the bullets claim a UK plug. Fifty volts is not a normal UK mains figure, so the two lines cannot both be the rating plate. Check the plate on the machine you receive. The raw price of £268.52 also sat beside a snippet with no featured offer on 19 October 2026.
