Pressure washer for cars

Updated: 21.10.2026

The car is dusty rather than filthy, and you would like the driveway wash to replace the bucket. A pressure washer for cars can rinse loose grit. It can also cut paint, lift a badge and damage a tyre valve if you treat the maximum bar as the setting for the door. This page stays on paint, glass, sensors and tyres. The eleven listings sit on our [pressure washer comparison](/hub/compressors/pressure-washer). Figures are those amazon.co.uk listings, with reviews through 4 October 2026. We did not wash a car for this guide. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A car wants a fan, not the dirt blaster

Maximum pressure on the title is the ceiling, not the force for the bonnet. Kärcher's K 5 Power Control manual says about 30 cm off paint, and the dirt blaster stays off paint, tyres and wood. A Kärcher article has said 15 cm from paint and 30 cm from tyres. Those sources do not match. The manual in your box wins. Which? has described a fan about 5 to 8 cm wide, or at least a metre if you cannot vary it, and another passage has used about 60 cm. Do not average 15 cm and 60 cm. Use a wide fan, and close in only while the finish looks untouched. The K 2 Classic includes a dirt blaster. The UniversalAquatak's 3-in-1 includes a point jet. The VYTRONIX includes a turbo. None of them belongs parked on a door, a sticker or a soft-top window. If the water turns milky with polish, you are already too close.

How far to stand

Obey the strictest published figure that applies to your lance: about 30 cm in the Kärcher manual, 15 cm in the Kärcher article, about 60 cm in one Which? explanation. STIHL's UK car note, for a brand not in this set, says a fan, at least 30 cm, a shallow angle, and not above 200 bar. That ceiling is not a reason to buy more power than this comparison stocks. Sensors, cameras, badges and tyre valves are softer than a flat door. Keep the fan wide and do not stop to dig at a bug or push the lance into a mirror.

What this set can and cannot do around a car

Both K 2 models state 3 m, and reviews say you shuffle the machine around the car. The K 3 Horizontal's 4 m hose is only a small improvement. One K 3 eco!Booster buyer returned the machine because the hose and cable felt short, even though that listing states 6 m. For reach, the UniversalAquatak 135 states 7 m at £108.00, with 135 bar, 450 litres an hour and 1,900 W, on 4.4 from 3,060 reviews. It is the first row we would open for a regular car wash. The K 4 states 8 m at £188, with 11.5 kg in the title and 6.3 kg in the field. The VYTRONIX states 6 m at £74.99 if you do not need Kärcher lances to fit. The AdvancedAquatak lists 17.6 kg, and its hose is 8 m in one line and 5 m in another. Grit in a dry brush will scratch. Bar and flow are in the buying guide.

Foam, then a mitt

Snow foam is a pre-wash. Parkers tested lances with a Kärcher K 3 at 120 bar and 380 litres an hour, which matches the K 3 class here, not a 345 bar claim. Foam loosens traffic film. It does not replace a mitt on gritted sills. Rinse, foam, wash with a clean mitt, then rinse again. Foam-lance shops often assume a Kärcher fitting. The VYTRONIX listing does not include that adaptor. The Yospinber names a foam tank at £49.99, and its power-source field disagrees with its cord. The K 3 eco!Booster lists a foam nozzle and shampoo beside 6 m of hose, with 53 reviews and a pressure clash. A hosepipe ban can prohibit mains washing of a private car. Read the notice. If the next surface is the drive, use the pressure washer for a patio or driveway page before you change nozzles.

Common questions

Will a jet washer strip paint?
It can, if the jet is narrow and close, or if you hold it still. A wide fan at the distance your manual states is the rinse. A dirt blaster on a door leaves a mark. Stop if the polish turns milky.
Can I use the dirt blaster on the car?
Not on paint, tyres or wood, if you follow the Kärcher manual. A muddy wheel arch is the temptation, and even there the jet keeps moving and stays off the valve. The K 2 Classic's dirt blaster is not a reason to ignore that.
How far should the nozzle be?
Published advice disagrees: about 30 cm, 15 cm, and about 60 cm. Use the strictest distance your own manual allows. Do not invent a compromise.
Is 110 bar enough for a car?
Yes for dust and light mud, with a wide fan on the K 2's 110 bar and 360 litres an hour. You will move a 3 m machine around the car. Do not use that pressure as a pencil jet on the bonnet.
Do I still need a sponge after foam?
Yes, if the dirt is stuck. Foam loosens film. Grit on the sills still needs a mitt, and a dry brush on dusty paint will scratch.
Is a 3 m hose long enough to walk around the car?
Usually no. K 2 reviews say you move the washer with you. A stated 7 m on the UniversalAquatak or 8 m on the K 4 is the comfortable loop, if the socket is not on the far side of the house.
