Portable air compressor for car and bike

Updated: 21.10.2026

You have a car on the drive and a bicycle in the hall, and you would like one pump for both. A portable air compressor for car and bike only works if the adapter is named in the box and you do not copy the car’s door-sticker pressure onto the bike. This page uses the twelve amazon.co.uk listings in our [portable air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/portable-air-compressor), read on 19 October 2026. Battery versus socket is on the [cordless or 12 V](/hub/compressors/portable-air-compressor/sub/portable-air-compressor-cordless-or-12v) page. The 8 litre Bimson is the wrong thing to carry to a bike. We did not fit these chucks in a workshop.

Three valves, not one bike nozzle

Most car valves in the UK are Schrader, the wider stem with a pin in the middle. A road bike, and many hybrids, use Presta. That stem is thinner, and a locknut at the tip has to be unscrewed before air will go in. Dunlop, also called Woods, is a third valve. A Cycling UK forum thread notes that a Presta head sometimes seals on a Dunlop valve and sometimes does not. If you own Dunlop, buy a listing that names Dunlop. A tapered toy nozzle or a ball needle is for a football or a swim ring. It is not a Presta adapter. The sequence, once the chuck fits, is on the how to use page.

What this set actually lists

Named in the included line: the Tarden 8023, the NOCO, the AstroAI and the Motorenbau. Those four are the clearest rows. The AstroAI is 12 V only, so the bike has to be next to the car. Named in a bullet, not in the specification included line: the Tarden 8024 and the WOLFBOX. The Lamicall says a French-style nozzle and does not use the word Presta. Dunlop appears once, on the Woowind kit bullet, with a Presta adapter and a braided Schrader hose. Not named: the HOVVIDA, the Semflagree and the Xiaomi. A UK review says a Xiaomi reached about 100 PSI on a bike. That is the reviewer’s use, not proof of an adapter in the box. The Bimson included line is a manual.

Car pressure is the wrong bike pressure

A car placard around 32 PSI, or the Motor Ombudsman’s guide of about 30–36 PSI, is a car figure. Cycling UK says you take bicycle pressure from the sidewall, then adjust. Their rule of thumb starts near 95 PSI for a 23 mm road tyre or 75 PSI for a 32 mm tyre. Those numbers illustrate the gap. They are not the pressure for your bike. A 150 PSI pump ceiling is the pump’s limit, not a target. Auto shut-off makes the mix-up easier. Leave a car preset of 34 PSI and the pump stops there on a tyre that may want something far higher. Overwrite the preset when you change vehicle. Open the Presta locknut or the pump will seem to have failed. After you disconnect, tighten the locknut and replace the cap. If the Presta piece is a separate collar, take it out before you go back to the car’s Schrader valve.

When one pump is enough

One pump is enough when the listing names the valve you own and you set the car placard and the bike sidewall as different numbers. The AstroAI can do a bike only while the bike is beside the car. A Tarden 8023 or a NOCO can leave the car, and both name Presta in the included line. The Woowind is the one that also names Dunlop. Skip the Xiaomi, the HOVVIDA and the Semflagree for a Presta bike, because they do not name the adapter. Skip the Bimson for the bike entirely. It weighs 16 kg and it does not list a bicycle valve. If your only bike is Schrader, a car chuck fits, and you still must not copy the car pressure onto the sidewall.

Common questions

Will a car pump fit a road-bike valve?
Only with an adapter the listing names. A car Schrader chuck does not clamp a Presta stem. You still unscrew the Presta locknut. A UK reviewer’s bike success on the Xiaomi does not prove an adapter was in that box.
What is a French valve?
French valve is another name for Presta. The Lamicall included line says French-style nozzle and does not use the word Presta. A tapered nozzle in the same kit is for a toy or an airbed, not for that stem.
Do I own a Dunlop valve?
Dunlop, or Woods, is the third type, on some older UK bikes. In this set only the Woowind kit bullet names a Dunlop adapter. If the listing does not say so, plan on a separate adapter.
Can I set the car’s 32 PSI on the bike?
No. About 32 PSI is a car figure. A bicycle takes the pressure on its sidewall. Auto shut-off will stop at 32 PSI if that is the number you left in the pump.
Is a ball needle the same as a Presta adapter?
No. A ball needle is a pin for footballs. Presta is a threaded bicycle valve with a locknut. The HOVVIDA box can cover a car and a football and still be the wrong box for a road bike.
Can the AstroAI do a bike beside the car?
The box includes a Presta-Schrader adaptor, and the pump runs from the car’s 12 V socket, with no battery. The bicycle has to be in reach of that lead. Set the pressure from the sidewall, and do not type the 150 PSI ceiling into a bike tyre.
