How to use a cordless pressure washer

Updated: 21.10.2026

The bucket is full, the battery clicks in, and the gun coughs air instead of water. That is the usual first minute with these pistol kits, and it is fixable before you blame the motor. This is how to use a cordless pressure washer from a bucket: get clean water through it, start on a wide spray, and stop if the pump runs dry. The Products Compared editorial team wrote it on 19 October 2026 from the listings in our [cordless pressure washer comparison](/hub/compressors/cordless-pressure-washer), plus Core Service’s setup notes, a Yard Force manual and Water Regs UK. Which gun to buy is on the [cordless pressure washer buying guide](/hub/compressors/cordless-pressure-washer/sub/cordless-pressure-washer-buying-guide). Button names differ. The order does not.

Set the water up before the battery

Fill a clean bucket, or use the bucket if the kit included one. Drop in the filter end of the suction hose and hold it under the surface. A filter that floats will suck air, and the pump will chatter without priming. One TUODYF review describes that floating filter. YKYI’s bullet claims a weighted filter. Core Service’s UK setup article says to purge with the machine off until water runs smooth, then switch on, and never run the pump without water. JVISION’s wand pushes in and rotates to lock. If the hose kinked in the box, straighten it. Rivlox and BULLA reviews both describe a suction hose that kinked and starved the pump.

Tap only if that listing allows it

TUODYF’s listing says not to connect that model to a garden tap. The note says the tap pressure is too high. Use a bucket for that ASIN even if you own a tap connector from another kit. JVISION, Flouritech, Jwdj, BULLA, YKYI and Prapark mention a tap or an adapter in their own bullets. TBRFP describes a bucket or butt and does not list a tap adapter. If your listing allows a tap, Water Regs UK still treats a hose union on the mains as a contamination route when the other end sits in dirty water. Unplug the charger and keep it out of the splash. Electrical Safety First treats the charger as the mains item.

Start on a fan, not a pencil jet

Fit the wide spray first. On a two-piece nozzle set that is the 40° tip, not the 0°. On a 6-in-1 head it is the fan or shower position, not the pencil. A 0° jet is a thin cutting stream. It is the wrong opening move on paint, on soft wood, and on a joint you have not looked at. No listing in this set publishes a tested safe distance, so this page will not invent one. Soap, if you use the bottle, goes on before the rinse. Foam bottles are on the cordless pressure washer for car washing page. Here the rule is only the order: fan first, pencil later, and only on a spot that can stand it. If the patio still will not shift after a proper prime and a fan pass, the limit is the class of machine. The cordless vs mains pressure washer page is the next read, not a tighter nozzle.

When it stops

A gun that ran and then died is often out of water, out of battery, or hot. If the bucket is empty, release the trigger and refill before you keep the motor spinning. A kink you thought you had pulled straight can fold again at the bucket rim. Check that before you swap batteries. Flouritech’s bullet claims an automatic shutdown on overheating or overload. A review describes cut-out after one large bucket in hot weather. If a connector is missing, as in Jwdj and BULLA reviews, that is a return, not a technique you can improvise with tape.

Common questions

The filter floats. What should I do?
Hold it under, or weight it so the mesh stays below the water without blocking the intake. A TUODYF review describes a floating filter. YKYI’s bullet claims a weighted filter, and that claim is not a description of every hose in this set. A floating filter sucks air, the prime fails, and the pump rattles. Do not solve it by forcing the gun onto a tap the listing forbids.
Can I leave it connected to the outside tap?
Only if that ASIN’s listing allows a tap. TUODYF’s listing says not to. Guns that list an adapter can be coupled for the wash and then disconnected. Do not leave a hose on a mains union with the other end in a bucket. Water Regs UK treats that arrangement as a contamination route. The charger stays indoors and dry either way.
It cut out after one bucket. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. Check that the bucket still has water, that the hose is not kinked, and that the battery still has charge. Flouritech claims an overload shut-off, and a review describes cut-out after one large bucket in hot weather. Let it cool before you restart. If it stops on a full bucket with a straight hose and a charged pack, and water is leaking from the body, stop using it.
Can I charge the battery outside?
No. Charge indoors, on a dry surface, and unplug the charger before you take the pack out to the bucket. Electrical Safety First treats the charger as the mains part of an otherwise cordless washer. These listings do not state the plug type, so confirm it is a UK 13 A plug when the charger arrives. Do not leave the charger on the patio while you wash.
What if a connector is missing?
Jwdj and BULLA reviews include a missing tap connector or a hose adaptor missing a plastic insert. That is a parts fault. Contact the seller or return the kit. Tape, a random garden fitting, or another gun’s adapter is not a repair, and it can side-step a listing that never included that joint. Do not put TUODYF on a tap to make up for a missing bucket hose.
