Air bag jack vs air bottle jack

Updated: 21.10.2026

The 20 ton figure looks like the careful choice, and the 3 ton bags look like the budget ones. On the five amazon.co.uk listings in our [compressed air jack comparison](/hub/compressors/compressed-air-jack), that reading is the wrong way round for a car. An air bag jack vs air bottle jack decision is about the corner you are lifting and the height the page actually prints. It was written on 19 October 2026 from those listings and from HSE’s rule on rated capacity. It is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Inlet and valve are on the [air bag jack buying guide](/hub/compressors/compressed-air-jack/sub/compressed-air-jack-buying-guide).

What a triple-bag jack is doing

A triple-bag jack stacks three rubber cushions in a steel frame. You slide it under a jacking point while it is still flat, then add air until that one corner rises. In this set the bags are AIM Tools 161207, AIM Tools 161202, KATSU 161200 and US PRO 8820. Each states 3 tons, also written as 6,600 lb. Where a weight is printed, the AIM Tools bags are 10 kg and the KATSU is 16.2 kg. Handles and wheels, when stated, let you place the jack without lying under the car. The bag still needs the maker’s jacking point, and it is not the support that holds the car.

What the air bottle is doing

An air bottle jack is a ram in a vertical body, fed by compressed air, sometimes with a hand pump as a backup. US PRO 8819 is the only bottle kept here. It states 20 tons, a manual override and 17 kg. The override is a line in the title and in one bullet. No UK review in this file shows it being used. Workshop guides put heavy plant on much larger jacks. That class is not ASIN B0GG4DXNKH, which prints neither a height nor a pressure. Neither the bags nor this bottle show that they meet BS EN 1494. A BS EN 13731 rescue bag is a different product.

What the listings actually state

The four bags state a start and a top: 140–450 mm on US PRO 8820, 145–400 mm on the KATSU, and 150–400 mm on both AIM Tools listings. Only 8820 also states 6–8 bar. Shelf prices on 19 October 2026 were £79.99, £89.99 and £99.99 for the bags. The bottle is £93.97 and states 20 tons, a manual override and 17 kg. Height, pressure and inlet are not stated, and there is no review line. Manual override is not stated on the bags. The bags with a star line sit at 4.4. US PRO 8820 has none. W-Tools Direct has listed a different 20 ton air bottle at £124.99 with 120–180 psi and 260–510 mm. Those figures are not B0GG4DXNKH. A blank on this listing is a blank, not a zero.

When the bag, when the bottle

Choose a 3 ton bag when you are lifting one corner of a car, an SUV or a light van, you already have a compressor, and the start height fits the gap you measured. The usual home-garage start is a bag with reviews and a stated G1/4 inlet. US PRO 8820 is the one that prints 6–8 bar. Who should skip the rust report, the split hose or the absent reviews is on the best air bag jack page. A bag is the wrong tool when the axle is heavier than 3 tons. HSE says not to exceed the rated capacity. Choose the 20 ton class when the job is a heavy axle, not when you want a safer car jack. US PRO 8819 is not a finished specification. You should not buy it until height and pressure come from the seller or from a listing that prints them.

Common questions

Is a 20 ton bottle safer for my car?
Not on these listings. A higher capacity is a different job. The car bags state a start height between 140 and 150 mm. The US PRO bottle states no height, so you cannot even know whether it will go under the sill. Safety here is the jacking point, firm ground and axle stands. It is not the largest number on the title.
Will the bag fit under a normal car when the bottle might not?
The bags state a minimum of 140, 145 or 150 mm, which is the range you can measure against. The bottle states no minimum, so the honest position is that you do not know until the seller gives you a figure. A lowered car can sit below 140 mm as well. Measure the gap. Do not borrow the 260 mm start from a different 20 ton bottle and treat it as this one.
What does manual override mean on the US PRO?
The listing states a manual backup, in the title and in one bullet. It does not describe the stroke, the effort or the load you can raise by hand. No review in this set shows it working. Treat stated as the limit of what we know. It is not evidence that you can jack a 20 ton rating without air.
Can I use a 3 ton bag on a van?
The US PRO 8820 vehicle line names a van, and other bags name SUVs, minivans or off-road vehicles depending on the listing. The limit is still the corner and the height. A 400 mm top, or 450 mm on 8820, may not free a high wheel. A heavy axle above the 3 ton rating is the bottle’s class, not a reason to over-inflate a car bag.
Why is the bottle only about £94 if it says 20 tons?
The shelf price is £93.97. The page is missing height, pressure, an inlet and a review line. A different UK trade bottle at about £125 prints 120–180 psi and 260–510 mm. You are not looking at the same specification at a discount. The lower price matches a thinner listing, not a hidden workshop bargain.
