How to mount an air hose reel

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are about to drill a UK garage wall for a spring-driven air hose reel, and the bracket will be tugged every time the hose comes out. How to mount an air hose reel is mostly a question of what that pull lands on. Plasterboard plugs, including the soft ones that arrive in the box, let go. Products Compared used the amazon.co.uk listings and UK sources in October 2026. We did not install a reel. This is not a ranking. Shelf prices and scores are on the [air hose reel comparison](/hub/compressors/air-hose-reel). A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The Draper 70838 is freestanding. Everything else below is for an enclosed spring reel.

What the bracket has to hold

The case is only part of the load. Listed weights in this set run from Bakaji at 5 kg and Güde at 5.7 kg through Goodyear at 5.9 kg to the Giraffe cases at 8.9 kg and 9.1 kg. The INCENDIOS 30 m title lists 12.5 kg. The INCENDIOS 15 m file prints 14.3 kg beside dimensions of 10.2 × 12.7 × 12.7 cm, which cannot both be right, so do not use 14.3 kg as a lifting figure. The pull is the rest. You lean back to free the last metre, and a lock that releases can snatch the bracket off the wall. Giraffe reviews in the shared sample include sheared fixing heads and a bracket pulled off when a lock let go. Goodyear reviews call the supplied wall plugs soft. Tanair’s install notes, from a UK trade supplier, ask you to check coverage, a surface that can take the load, clearance, pull direction, and inlet size, then isolate and depressurise before you connect. Find solid structure before you open the packet of plugs. A dot-and-dab plasterboard wall is a sheet with a void behind it. The plugs in the box stop in the sheet. The sheet is not the wall. None of these listings gives a drill size you can copy, so this page will not invent one. Güde’s English comments say the instructions omit the hole diameter.

A brick, block, or stud wall

On solid brick or concrete block, masonry expansion bolts belong in the masonry, not in the plaster skim and not in a plasterboard lining. Drill into the brick or the block, clear the dust, and set the anchors the bolt was made for. If you cannot tell what is behind the paint, stop. Giraffe’s listing includes an expansion bolt and also says the reel can go on any solid surface. The bolt does not make every surface solid. Goodyear’s 135 degree swivel bracket still needs that solid fixing. INCENDIOS claims a 180 degree swivel for wall or ceiling and includes a screw, which is not a specification of the wall. On a timber stud wall, the screws need the stud, not the plasterboard between studs. Studs in UK houses are often around 400 mm or 600 mm apart, and the reel’s hole pattern may not match. If the bracket misses the timber, fix a plywood pattress across two studs and bolt the reel to the plywood. A single plasterboard plug does not spread the pull. Bakaji includes fixing screws and does not say what wall they suit. Mark the pull direction before you drill. The hose should leave the reel towards the work, with room for the swivel to turn, and with the lead-in able to reach the compressor without a sharp kink. Goodyear reviews call the inlet hose short. A bracket that faces the wrong way makes that short lead-in shorter still. The Draper 70838 stays on the floor. Its specification says freestanding, and a customer question about a wall does not change that. Its inlet problem belongs on the retractable versus manual page. Do not bolt that frame up from this page.

A ceiling mount

Giraffe’s listings claim a wall, a ceiling, or another solid surface. INCENDIOS claims a 180 degree swivel for a garage wall or a workshop ceiling. Goodyear, Güde, and Bakaji are described as wall mounts. A ceiling is not a free upgrade on a wall-only bracket. If you use it, the fixing is a joist, or a timber bridge between two joists, not the plasterboard lid of the garage. Joists run one way. A detector and a small pilot hole tell you more than the listing photograph. If the ideal spot falls between joists, screw a board across at least two joists and hang the reel from that board. Do not hang the case from plasterboard anchors because the listing said ceiling. The weight is then in shear and in tension every time the hose is pulled, and a failed anchor drops a spring case. Clearance matters more overhead than on a wall. The case, the swivel, and your head all occupy the same space. A 15 m hose that retracts past your face is the hazard HSE guidance HSG39 is pointing at when it describes whip from a hose that lets go. Stand to the side for the first rewind, not underneath the drum. If you cannot find a joist, or the ceiling is concrete you are not equipped to anchor, that is the moment for a fitter rather than a longer screw.

Connect, then test the lock

Isolate the compressor and vent the line before you connect or disconnect. Open the regulator or the tank drain until the hose you are holding is soft, then make the joint. The thread and the quick-coupling profile are a separate job, covered on BSP air hose fittings. Tape does not convert NPT to BSP, and a PCL plug in a Euro coupling can look seated and then come apart. Do that matching with the air off. Charge the reel only after the fittings are tight. Set a modest pressure first, listen at the lead-in, and watch the joint. Then pull the hose out, set the lock, and tug once to see whether the ratchet holds. Stand clear of the rewind path. A lock that will not catch is a stop, not a running-in period. Goodyear reviews say the lock does not always catch. Giraffe reviews include a lock that is hard to set. Bakaji reviews include reels that would not rewind on the first use. If the hose flies back, or the bracket moves, shut the air off and vent again before you touch the case. Do not open the clock spring to fix a weak rewind. A clock spring can injure you if the case is opened. That repair is a professional job, or a different reel. The length, bore, and pressure checks you should have made before drilling sit with the buying order, not with a longer screw.

Common questions

Can I use the plugs in the box on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall?
No. Dot and dab leaves a void behind the board, and a plug in the board does not reach brick. Goodyear reviews already call the supplied plugs soft on ordinary walls. The bracket is pulled every time you draw hose. Fix into solid brick or block, or into studs, or into a plywood pattress screwed across two studs. If you cannot find that structure, do not hang the reel.
How do I hang a reel from a ceiling?
Only if that listing claims a ceiling mount, and only from a joist or from a timber bridge fixed across two joists. Giraffe and INCENDIOS claim ceiling use. Goodyear, Güde, and Bakaji are sold as wall reels. Plasterboard anchors in a garage ceiling are the wrong fixing, because the load is the case plus the pull. If you cannot locate a joist, stop and get a fitter. Stand clear of the drum when you test the rewind.
Do I need a swivel bracket?
You need the hose to leave towards the work without kinking the lead-in. Goodyear claims a 135 degree swivel wall bracket. INCENDIOS claims 180 degrees. Güde claims a swivelling wall bracket. A swivel on the bracket is not the same as a swivel inlet on the drum. The Draper reviews describe an inlet that turns with the drum, and that reel is freestanding rather than a wall job. Point the outlet before you drill so a short lead-in can still reach the compressor.
Should the compressor be running while I connect the lead-in?
No. Isolate it and vent the hose until the line is soft. Then tighten the fitting, then put air back on, starting at a modest pressure and listening for a leak. HSE guidance on compressed air treats a disconnected hose as a whip. A joint made on a live coupling is the same hazard with the reel still loose on the bracket. Matching BSP and the coupling profile comes before that first charge.
What if the supplied bolts shear?
Stop using the reel. Sheared heads appear in the Giraffe review block, and soft plugs appear in the Goodyear reviews. A sheared bolt means the load reached the fixing, not that you need a bigger plug in the same plasterboard hole. Move the bracket onto masonry or onto timber that spans the studs or joists. If the case or the spring mount is damaged, do not open the spring housing to look.
Is the Draper a wall reel?
The specification says freestanding. It is a steel frame with a carry handle and a manual crank, listed at 4.04 kg, with 20 m of polyethylene hose. A question on the listing asks about wall mounting, and the installation method does not change to wall. Leave it on the floor. If you need a wall reel, use one of the spring models and fix that bracket as above.
When should I stop and get a fitter?
Stop if the ceiling has no joist you can find, if you cannot tell brick from a hollow lining, or if a weeping joint might be NPT screwed into a BSP port. Stop if the spring case has to come apart, or if the lock releases on its own and the bracket has already moved. Also stop if the compressor is used at work and nobody has looked at the pressure-system duties. A Saturday drill bit does not answer those.
