Air hose reel buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You have a compressor in a UK garage, a blow gun or a tyre inflator on the bench, and a hose that lives in a coil on the floor. An air hose reel buying guide is the order of checks before the title’s metre count decides for you. Products Compared compared eight amazon.co.uk listings in October 2026. We did not run a lab test. Shelf prices sit on the [air hose reel comparison](/hub/compressors/air-hose-reel). If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The useful order is short. Confirm the listing is an air reel, then match the fitting, then match the working pressure to the compressor cut-out, then choose length and check the bore, then decide rewind and what the bracket bolts into. Star ratings come after those facts.

Confirm it is an air reel, then the fitting

Amazon sometimes files an air reel under garden hose reels. The Draper 70838 carries a garden rank and is still a 20 bar air hose on a freestanding frame. A garden reel, a spray-gun kit, or a loose hybrid hose with no drum is a different purchase, and those were left out of this set. Read the pressure line and the word air before you trust the browse node. The fitting is the next check, and it is not the same thing as the hose bore. You need the thread the compressor port uses, usually a BSP size, and one quick-coupling profile, PCL or Euro. NPT is a different thread. The detail of those three mismatches is on the BSP air hose fittings page. Several titles name only one of the three. The Goodyear title says 3/8 inch BSP and a bullet says 3/8 inch NPT, so neither string is treated as settled here. Güde says couplings are included and does not name a thread. Bakaji says 1/4 inch and does not say Euro or imperial. If the page will not name the plug, budget for a connector you can identify, or leave the listing.

Length, then bore

Measure from the reel’s mounting point to the furthest job you actually do, then add slack so the hose is not tight at the tool. A blow gun at the back of a single car, with the reel near the middle of the wall, is often inside 10 m or 15 m. A corner mount, a driveway, or a van that has to reach around the vehicle needs more. MyToolShed suggests allowing about 3–5 m past the furthest point. Treat that as a retailer’s rule of thumb, then walk the route with a tape, including the rise from the bracket to your hand. Bakaji is the 10 m hose plus a 1 m connection hose in this set. Güde, Goodyear, both Giraffe listings, and the INCENDIOS 15 m title are the 15 m group. The Draper is 20 m and manual. The INCENDIOS page whose title says 30 m also says 100 ft in a bullet and 15 metres in the unit-count field, so that reach is not a fact you can buy from the title alone. A longer hose still has to pass air. Tanair, a UK trade supplier, says not to choose on length alone because a small bore drops pressure at the tool. Güde prints 9.5 mm inner diameter and a 3 mm wall. The Goodyear bullets describe a 3/8 inch hybrid hose. Giraffe’s titles say a 3/8 inch hybrid airline and do not give a millimetre bore. Bakaji’s 1/4 inch line is a connection, and a 12 mm item-diameter cell is not the hose bore. The Draper does not state an inside diameter at all. Extra metres with an unknown hole can starve an impact wrench even when the tyre inflator still feels fine.

Working pressure and hose compound

Match the hose’s stated working pressure to the compressor’s cut-out, not to a workshop slogan. Güde states 12 bar. The Draper states 20 bar, which the title also prints as 280 psi. Goodyear states 300 PSI (20 bar). Both INCENDIOS listings state 300 PSI. Bakaji’s specification rows do not state a pressure. One review mentions 8 bar, which is a comment, not a catalogue figure. The Giraffe TA15B bullets do not state a pressure. The TA15BPLUS states a maximum of 300 PSI. If your compressor cuts out near 10 bar, a 12 bar hose can still be the right band, and a blank pressure cell is a reason to skip that listing rather than guess. The reel is not the air receiver. Compressed air above 0.5 bar is a relevant fluid under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000, and a written scheme applies to qualifying systems used at work. A home hobbyist with no employees is not that employer. HSE guidance HSG39 describes hose rupture and whip. Isolate and vent the line before you connect or disconnect. Hose compound in this set is hybrid polymer (Goodyear, Giraffe, INCENDIOS), rubber/PVC (Güde), polyethylene (Draper), or unstated (Bakaji). Polyethylene on the Draper is what reviewers sometimes call stiff in the cold. Temperature lines, where they exist, are catalogue ranges: Goodyear prints −40 °C to 80 °C, INCENDIOS prints −5 °C to 45 °C. None of those ranges was checked in a cold garage for this guide.

Rewind, mount, and what to skip

Seven of these listings are enclosed spring reels. They claim to pull the hose back after a tug and to lock at a chosen length. Slow or controlled retract is a claim. Güde labels it ASRC and does not print a time. Giraffe claims about 5–6 seconds, which is the listing’s figure, not a stopwatch result from us. The Draper is the manual reel: a steel frame, a crank, and polyethylene hose. UK reviews say its inlet turns with the drum, so you disconnect it before you wind or unwind. That mechanical choice is the whole of the retractable versus manual page. Fix a spring reel to masonry or to timber studs or joists, not to plasterboard alone. The bracket is pulled every time the hose comes out. How to find the structure, and when to stop, is on how to mount an air hose reel. Do not open the clock-spring case. The spring can injure you. Skip unmeasured lines. A 31,400 sq ft reach, a 5 percent airflow increase with no base figure, and a claim about 80 percent of tasks are not measurements. Do not treat two ASINs that share review text as two tests. This page does not crown one of them.

Common questions

Is 10 m enough for one garage, or do I need 15 m?
Often 10 m or 15 m is enough when the reel sits near the middle and the job is a car, a blow gun, and a bench. A corner bracket or a driveway usually needs more. Walk from the bracket to the furthest valve with a tape and add slack. MyToolShed’s extra 3–5 m is a rule of thumb, not a measurement of your garage. Bakaji is the 10 m plus 1 m listing here. The 15 m titles still have to show a bore and a pressure.
Does a longer hose always feed an impact tool?
No. Extra metres with a small or unstated bore drop the pressure at the tool. Tanair makes that point for trade reels, and it applies to these listings. Güde states 9.5 mm. Several other pages state only a thread size, or nothing. A tyre inflator can feel fine on a hose that starves a high-consumption tool. If the inside diameter is absent, you cannot check that from the title.
What working pressure should I compare with the compressor cut-out?
Use the compressor’s cut-out pressure and the hose’s stated working pressure. In this set that stated figure is 12 bar on the Güde, 20 bar on the Draper, or 300 PSI where Goodyear and the INCENDIOS pages print it. Bakaji and the Giraffe TA15B do not state one. A blank cell is not 8 bar because a review guessed it. The reel is not the receiver, and a home purchase is not a written scheme under the pressure-systems rules.
Why does Amazon file some air reels under garden hose reels?
The browse node and the product are not always the same. The Draper’s best-sellers rank sits under garden hose reels while the title and the 20 bar line describe an air hose. Read the pressure, the word air, and the fitting. A garden reel or a loose hose without a drum was removed from this comparison. Rank position does not tell you the bore.
Does buying a reel mean I need a written scheme?
Not by itself, if you are a homeowner with no employees and the reel is not the air receiver. Compressed air above 0.5 bar is a relevant fluid under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 when a system is used at work. PUWER 1998 places duties on employers and the self-employed. If people use the compressor at work, check those rules rather than guessing from a reel page.
What should I skip if the listing does not name PCL or Euro?
Skip it if you cannot match the plug you already own, or plan a named adapter after you have identified both sides. Thread size, NPT, and the quick-coupling profile are three different matches. Güde, Bakaji, and both Giraffe titles leave the profile unnamed. The Goodyear page names BSP and NPT in different places. Forcing a near-fit is how a coupling blows apart.
