1/4 vs 3/8 air hose reel

Updated: 21.10.2026

A 1/4 vs 3/8 air hose reel choice is a choice of inside diameter, and the titles mix that up with the thread. You can buy a 1/4 inch hose on a 1/4 inch BSP end, a 3/8 inch hose on a 1/4 inch coupler, or a 1/2 inch hose that still ends in 1/4 inch NPT. Over about 15 m, the narrow hose is the one that starves an impact wrench, and a 300 psi sticker will not widen it. This page sorts the listings in the [15 m comparison](/hub/compressors/air-hose-reel-15m) into the three bands UK suppliers use. None of the captures publishes a measured pressure drop. We did not flow-test the reels.

Bore is not the thread size

The bore is the hole the air travels through. The thread is how the end attaches. They can share a number and still be different parts. A 1/4 inch hole is about 6 mm, 3/8 inch is about 9.5 mm, and 1/2 inch is about 13 mm. Goodyear states both a 3/8 inch hose and a 3/8 inch BSP connector. UK reviews then say that connector misses 1/4 inch tools. Thread choices continue on the buying guide.

6 mm, 10 mm and 13 mm

The Hosemaster groups hose by the tool. About 6–7 mm suits nailers, blow guns and tyre inflators. About 8–10 mm is the workshop size for impact wrenches and spray guns. About 13 mm is for continuous high demand. A 1/4 inch hose on a large impact can cut the pressure at the tool hard. That is a trade rule of thumb, not a laboratory curve for these reels. BILITOOLS states 1/2 inch. Draper states 1/4 inch UK-type couplers and no bore, which is also the limit on the best 15 m reel page.

Why 300 psi does not add airflow

A hose rated at 300 psi, about 20 bar, is claimed to hold that pressure. It does not push more air through a 6 mm hole. Hybrid is not an ISO 5774 citation unless the seller names the standard. Güde states 12 bar on a 9.5 mm hose. That can sit above an 8 bar cut-out, and it does not tell you the tool will see 8 bar after 15 m. The INCENDIOS can state 300 psi and still be the wrong spray-gun reel, because the bore is 1/4 inch.

The coupling can be the narrow point

BILITOOLS pairs a 1/2 inch hose with 1/4 inch NPT fittings. You may have bought 13 mm of hose and still be passing air through a 1/4 inch hole, and NPT does not seal on BSP. Goodyear’s complaint is the reverse: the bore is in the workshop band, and the 3/8 inch BSP outlet misses 1/4 inch tools. An adaptor fixes the thread only if the hole through it is not a second restriction. PCL and Euro couplers are not interchangeable, and a loose PCL plug in a Euro body can blow apart. Take the hungriest tool, put it on the 6 mm, 10 mm or 13 mm band, and only then compare price.

Common questions

Is 1/4 inch the same as 1/4 inch BSP?
No. 1/4 inch on the hose is the bore, about 6 mm. 1/4 inch BSP is a thread. INCENDIOS states both, so on that listing the numbers happen to match. Giraffe states a 3/8 inch hose and a 1/4 inch quick connect, so the numbers do not match, and both can still be correct. Read the word next to the fraction: hose, BSP, NPT or coupler.
Will 15 m of 6 mm hose run a 1/2 inch impact wrench?
Treat that as the wrong band. Hosemaster’s guidance puts large impacts on about 8–10 mm, and says a 1/4 inch hose can cut tool pressure hard. That is a rule of thumb, not a test of the INCENDIOS. A short burst on a small wrench may still work. A 1/2 inch gun, used as sold, wants the 10 mm band, and the compressor still has to supply it. A 300 psi sticker does not make up the difference.
Is 9.5 mm close enough to 3/8 inch?
On the conversion, yes. 3/8 inch is 9.525 mm, and Güde states 9.5 mm. One UK review of that reel says it throttles air tools, so the ruler is not a flow result. Giraffe and Goodyear state 3/8 inch in words. If you need the workshop band, 9.5 mm is the right region, and you still read the pressure and the UK comments before you treat it as the same reel.
When is a 1/2 inch reel worth the money?
When the tool is in the high-demand band, the compressor can supply it, and the fittings do not throw the width away. BILITOOLS is the only 1/2 inch hose here, at £139.99, and it ends in 1/4 inch NPT. That thread is why it is often the wrong extra in a UK garage. It is not worth it for a nailer or a tyre inflator. Those tools already fit a 6–10 mm hose, and a wider hose does not make a small compressor larger.
Does a higher psi rating fix a small bore?
No. Psi and bar describe the pressure the hose is rated to hold, not how much air fits through the hole. A 1/4 inch hose at 300 psi remains a 1/4 inch hose. A 9.5 mm hose at 12 bar can feed a hungrier tool more easily, if the cut-out is below 12 bar, even though 12 bar is the lower rating. Compare bore first. Then check that the printed pressure is above the cut-out.
What bore is the Draper 29669?
The captured listing does not say. It states 15 m of hybrid hose and 1/4 inch UK-type couplers. The coupler figure is not a hose bore. At £107.24, beside listings that state 3/8 inch, a blank is a reason to read the plate or choose a reel that prints the size. Do not infer a 1/4 inch hose from a 1/4 inch coupler.
